To black out the doors on the fridge you can very simply just tape cardboard on the doors. You probably get quite a lot of cardboard boxes when ordering things, just cut them into big sheets. 🐍😊
Magnets with strong self-adhesive backing might be the order of the day. Stick some to the door, stick some to the sheets. Play your cards right and you might be able to use the same sheets for other purposes (e.g. indigo snakes). If the magnets don't stick to the door or sheets, possibly a steel strip would stick better. If nothing's sticking to the sheets, it might be possible to fix something to it by sewing it on. Punching holes in a steel strip and sewing through them is one example. It might be possible to get a magnet with a hole in the centre, which could be sewn through as well.

For trying to keep the dark tarps on the fridge, I'd suggest Velcro! Depending on what the fabric is made of, you might even only need the ruff side! But if not, there is always a small bit of fabric glue and getting the other side to stick on.
I found perfect way to make my snakes dark. I bought black and white reflection foil for plants. Its purpose is to keep the most of light inside of plant build so the other side is also usable to make things dark. I tried it this year for brumation and everything is nice and dark inside :) I think it would be easy to stick it to the doors on your incubation station :D
My garter has been chilling in the fridge for a while now. It does feel a little weird cause sometimes I'll go to get orange juice and they will stare at me with the slowest tounge flicks 😁
Maybe they could use Velcro for the fridge? Like line the doors and then line the fabric (might have to stitch it to the fabric) and then stick them together? So the doors still function and it stays dark.
We did just finish all the egg videos, they had a lot. Brumation caught me off guard too. I'm like, "where did the time go?" Can't wait for all the new baby sneks

for the fridge: black-core foam core, velcro 3m strips on the inside of the glass, so you can re-use the same foam core each year. its super light weight and easy to cut to size, and should be black-out (unlike white-core, which isn't). any of your signage friends should have some or know where to find some locally if your local craft/hobby store doesn't keep any in stock!
I hope they see this, I agree that this would be a great solution! Regular tape might not have worked but the sticky stuff on velcro strips is super heavy duty, I bet it would hold on to the glass just fine
excellent idea. Plenty of people are recommending velcro, but I have doubts that'd stick very well to the fridge under the weight of the fabric. Foam is light enough for the velcro to work
@@melissajarvis4829 yes, but they might want to be able to reuse the foam on other cages and continually removing command strips could damage the foam. Doing the velcro strips means they could velcro the panels onto different cages as needed.

You could use black chalk paint on the windows to black them out, which would also give you a place to take notes about any issues or certain Snakes you may have had to check on more frequently. Also, for the Brumation Station logo, find someone with a Cricut machine and you'll have an awesome graphic printed on vinyl with a sticky backing. Since you are not just painting the doors I guess the point is to be able to see thru them, so I recommend putting a curtain rod and hang blackout curtains, perhaps even a roll-up one since that would save on space.
I was thinking the same thing but with pbc pipes wrapped around the top and bottom and the black material used like a curtain and just clipped together where they meet so you an either slide it or just unclip the two you need. And if you make the pipe small enough around you could get as close to the metal as possible to eliminate any little slips of light getting in.
I can see you guys are going to need a small walk-in fridge built for this. If not enough room here then perhaps at the warehouse. It was fun to see all the variations together!

So happy to see Brad healed up well ♥️ It's so strange seeing a wound on a snake like that... I was sure it looked worse than it was, but still comforting to see she's healed well.
When Emily climbed into the fridge and couldn’t open it from inside? Reminded me that late 50s and 60s there was a safety drive that old fridges had to have doors removed before trashing to prevent kids getting locked in while playing, then suffocating. So then I thought, how will the snakes get enough oxygen with doors hermetically sealed? I worry a lot.
Reptiles also slow down their breathing alot when they do this. They need significantly less oxygen which is why some turtles are perfectly fine being trapped under ice in bodies of water.
Kids, never step into any empty fridge because if you can't get out, you can suffocate. This happened to a friend's grandson who climbed into an abandoned fridge to play at hiding, nobody knew where he was, nobody could hear him and by the time someone did he sadly had passed away.
Cool solution! Would it be a good idea to add a CO2, O2, and temperature alarm for it? I find myself wondering if there's sufficient airflow to keep the air fresh.
I had a similar thought. It would be a good idea to have alarms on this refrigerator. Sometimes, thermostats fail. I had a thermostat fail on a refrigerator once; it got stuck, and the refrigerator kept getting colder and colder until a big block of ice formed in the back. Allowing food or drinks to get a bit too cold isn't usually a big deal, but allowing the snakes to get too cold would be a disaster.
for attaching the door cover, you could use velcro tape. we used that in handbell choir to attach table skirts to our tables and it stayed put really well.
cant wait for the breeding plans video! even tho im not in the place to have a snake right now i always love watching the brumation/breeding plans/hatching videos, they make my brain happy
Still keep the fabric covers but use velcro strips to attach them to the fridge and maybe cut out a little "peekaboo" window which can then be covered with a velcro patch 👀🐍
If this "fridge" is going to be permanently used as a brumation station, maybe you can just get a room darkening film for windows? I have some for my bedroom windows and I love it! You can put a sheet on either side (inside and outside) to double up and make it even darker!
I bought some adhesive black vinyl that I used to black out the glass doors on a cabinet I bought. You can get that stuff in rolls off the internet. It goes on really well if you just spray the glass with some water and use a squeegee to get rid of air bubbles!
Since the doors are glass you could just use window vinyls that are blackout. You dampen them, stick them on, cut to size, and they stick via static. Completely removable without consequences and the are super easy to install/replace. That way you aren't messing with the doors opening and closing too. They are on amazon and are usually used for privacy in rentals. I have them on all my 1st floor windows.
You should check out Elemental Machines! We use them to monitor fridges and freezers in the lab world where $$$ reagents need specific temps. Good way to monitor temps and get alerts when something goes wrong.
Have you guys looked into florist coolers? (Not sure if that's what that cooler is) You can get a pretty decent sized walk in that would be around that temp range! Might be expensive tho, I haven't shopped for one in a while.
You can always use a blackout window film and it should look sleek and block out all the light! Best part is it doesn’t damage the glass if you wanted to take it off in the future and you can add stickers on top of it
I suggest using velcro tape that has adhesive on one side around the glass of each door. Then you can attach the other side of the velcro to whatever you want to use such as cardboard, paper or the fabric. You will then be able to easily take it on and off when you still want to see through the doors. It just looks more professional then just taping things to the doors.
You could superglue adhesive 1+quarter inch wide velro tape to the door frames (the section that surrounds the glass) then make panels of fabric that are the same size with velcro sewn on around the edges.
get blackout curtains they come in pairs. get a metal adhesive strip from the car parts place, can place 1 on the top of the doors, and one on the curtains, snap them together
*in the future* Worker of Snake Discovery: And in this fridge is where we keep our brumating snakes....as well as a wild Emily... Guests: Ooh...neat! Emily: Wait...im not a snake..!
For blocking out the light I would do a double application of the darkest window tint you can find 5% doubled up should be darn near pitch black. It wouldn’t affect how the doors work and there will be no risk of the cover falling off if someone bumps it. And it will look nice and clean add a vinyl decal while your at it. Which is another option. You could try the cricket vinyl rolls in black or holographic Chrome for a fancier look! Both should be solid enough to not transfer much of any light through it.
Is there enough air exchange to get a good oxygen supply for all of them? Edit; you could get magnet strips and glue them along the top of each door :)
For the fridge cover you could put strips of self-adhesive velcro along the edges of the doors, and sew/iron/stick the opposing velcro onto the fabric covers. Then you can easily take the covers on and off without worrying about tape or sticky residue ect
Spicy bacon? Sounds like a yummy new food. Lol For covering the fridge, you could use black foam board from the dollar store. We had to use it in our old apartment to black out and insulate some windows for winter. The black ones are wonderful and you can cut them to exact size then tape them in place so they cover each door exactly.
When I worked overnights I had these blackout curtains that were like construction paper, and folded accordion style? I flattened them out and taped them down so the sun wouldn’t get thru the sides. Worked really well. Got them off Amazon, they were not too much.
Well keep in mind if they open the door briefly every few days there will be plenty. It's actually a pretty common practice. Adam from WWR incubated and brumates in drink coolers, so every other day or so he just opens and closes the lid.
I’ve only seen this done with turtles!! It’s always wild to remember that some animals can just hang out in a fridge for winter. Love these videos 💖💘💝!!
If you needed something to cover the fridge doors and you didn't mind not being able to peek in without opening the doors, you could you the blackout window cling stuff that just needs water to stick to glass, or cover up some of it with that and use the fabric to make a window you can flip up to look into the fridge!
One way to attach the fabric could be to use velcro, one side attached to the doors and the other sewn onto the fabric. That way you could keep it quite light free
To black out the doors on the fridge you can very simply just tape cardboard on the doors. You probably get quite a lot of cardboard boxes when ordering things, just cut them into big sheets. 🐍😊

Remember kids (and stupid teens/adults who think its safe) ..dont do an emily and go into any fridge
Allowing food or drinks to get a bit too cold isn't usually a big deal, but allowing the snakes to get too cold would be a disaster.
for attaching the door cover, you could use velcro tape. we used that in handbell choir to attach table skirts to our tables and it stayed put really well.
my night is 100% better when there’s a new snake discovery video. happy new year everyone💚
ps: will you ever posted the incubator video?
Emily said recently that she was going to post the incubator video soon so it's coming
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@@SrslyBored1 One day!!
I’ve got a feeling that this breeding season will be extra special/exciting!
You could always paint the doors with a few layers, and if you do, may I suggest: calk-board paint for extra shenanigans.
cant wait for the breeding plans video! even tho im not in the place to have a snake right now i always love watching the brumation/breeding plans/hatching videos, they make my brain happy
Still keep the fabric covers but use velcro strips to attach them to the fridge and maybe cut out a little "peekaboo" window which can then be covered with a velcro patch 👀🐍
I am sad to see last year’s baby season end, snake discovery had such a successful/ crazy year! Wish you guys lots of luck!
If this "fridge" is going to be permanently used as a brumation station, maybe you can just get a room darkening film for windows? I have some for my bedroom windows and I love it! You can put a sheet on either side (inside and outside) to double up and make it even darker!
great idea!
I bought some adhesive black vinyl that I used to black out the glass doors on a cabinet I bought. You can get that stuff in rolls off the internet. It goes on really well if you just spray the glass with some water and use a squeegee to get rid of air bubbles!
Does the fridge bring in fresh air? Usually you have to open up the door to circulate air. Like with a wine cooler
Such a fun seasonal video! I love to see them all together like this.
You could superglue adhesive 1+quarter inch wide velro tape to the door frames (the section that surrounds the glass) then make panels of fabric that are the same size with velcro sewn on around the edges.
try velcro strips, sew it on the fabric and stick it to the unit on the other side for the curtains.
I think there are stick on vinyl blackout sheets you could get that you can cut to the dimensions of the fridge windows. Might be better than fabric.
Hi! Can you please give an update on your DeKay's Brown snakes?
door dark suggestion - velcro... you can order it in rolls and then just line the area you want. :) hope your 2023 babies are all healthy and exciting
get blackout curtains they come in pairs. get a metal adhesive strip from the car parts place, can place 1 on the top of the doors, and one on the curtains, snap them together
Happy New Year Emily and Ed Keep Being an Inspiration and truly good people
Can We just appreciate the time and effort that they put in these amazing videos❤
I’m surprised y’all didn’t get a walk-in fridge for brumation, maybe in the future! So glad you found a way to do it this year!
Maybe you can use velcro strips to hold up the drapes?
Omg, the light brown hog nose with the stripes on the end of the tail and he has thick straight across stripes on his body, he is gorgeous!!!!
*in the future*
Worker of Snake Discovery: And in this fridge is where we keep our brumating snakes....as well as a wild Emily...
When Emily crawled in the fridge,it was so funny
Happy New Years Ed and Emily! (And all the snakes and reptiles too)❤❤❤
For the fridge cover you could put strips of self-adhesive velcro along the edges of the doors, and sew/iron/stick the opposing velcro onto the fabric covers. Then you can easily take the covers on and off without worrying about tape or sticky residue ect
I just saw this video, and seeing the sheer range of colours and patterns of the male hognoses is amazing.
Snakes talking-
Snake:Hi what do you do for the winter
Other snake: i sleep in a fridge 😀
Seeing all these beauties together is serious cuteness overload 😍
I’d use Velcro for the covers
Spicy bacon? Sounds like a yummy new food. Lol
For covering the fridge, you could use black foam board from the dollar store. We had to use it in our old apartment to black out and insulate some windows for winter. The black ones are wonderful and you can cut them to exact size then tape them in place so they cover each door exactly.
I can make a vinyl decal like that for your fridge! Where I work we do graphic design and make decals and signs and things!
You should try blackout decals! They cling to the doors, are removable, and reusable. Super easy!
I was just wandering about air flow as a fridge is designed to be airtight to aid in food preservation
When I worked overnights I had these blackout curtains that were like construction paper, and folded accordion style? I flattened them out and taped them down so the sun wouldn’t get thru the sides. Worked really well. Got them off Amazon, they were not too much.
Happy New Year
You could also use fish tank backing! There are probably people who print custom ones, so you could get Brumation Station written on it! :D
You guys can use black contact paper for the doors, it’s easy to remove if you don’t want it there permanently? Just a thought! :)
Awesome~👍
I hope they all spend the winter well~
Thank you for sharing this video~🤗
I never get to see a snake discovery video as soon as it comes out, when it comes out late. So I’m happy right now.
Now that the adults are in brumation, would love to see updates of juvenile and baby snakes you guys held back 🙏
This might be a stupid question, but do you measure the oxygen in the fridge as well?
My question too!
Not a stupid question.
Well keep in mind if they open the door briefly every few days there will be plenty. It's actually a pretty common practice.
Adam from WWR incubated and brumates in drink coolers, so every other day or so he just opens and closes the lid.
Velcro strips with adhesive on the back. Sew the other side to the curtains, top and bottom. Easy to put on and easy to remove.
I'm wondering if they still have the Dekays snakes and if they need to brumate
One way to attach the fabric could be to use velcro, one side attached to the doors and the other sewn onto the fabric. That way you could keep it quite light free
I don't know why, but when waffle came onto screen I thought, ' They should get a boy named chicken and make chicken and waffle babehs'
