Have you had banana cream pie? It's the kind where homemade will be infinitely better than anything store bought. This is partially because bananas just won't keep very long so you can't have it languishing on some shelf. I really hope you try this tasty pie recipe out!

A couple people asked about the vodka in the crust so I just want to clarify that it burns off during baking. Basically it helps bring the dough together without activating the gluten. :)
I can’t have vodka for religious purposes what can I use instead?
You're the best!
@@saimatasnim5716 I use apple cider vinegar and my pie crusts always turn out really nice
Saima Tasnim He already said it burns off during baking. So there won't be any left.
@@saimatasnim5716 you can leave it out, the crust will stll be tasty
My husband saw the video before I did. So while at Costco he was getting some of the ingredients. I was like...What's all this? It's for the banana cream pie he said all giddy like a little boy. The what.....wait...did preppy kitchen post a video? YES !!! he said as he walked away giggling. Just saw the video...now I know what all the fuss is about. Hope our end result looks like yours 😄.
Pati Erazo CUTE! 😍
Awww it’s cute that you and your husband have that relationship!
Awwww n_n teehee I do know that little exciting feeling you get when you’re about to make one of his recipes tho! I get like that too
That's amazing!!!
Pati Erazo 😂😂😂😂
I roast 2 bananas in their peel, then mash and add to vanilla custard for a natural banana flavor. So yummy. Love your videos!
Great tip! Thank you so much♡♡♡
That's the way my grandmother made hers. Love~
Thanks tip, will try.
Hello. I was just going to ask him if you could add banana puree to the custard. Does your pie still last or must you eat it all in one day? Thank you
How long do you have to roast in oven and in what temperature and do you just put bananas on a cookie sheet?
John: keep an eye on this

Greetings from Maine!
I'm a pastry chef, but I can't get enough of your adorable videos. You're an excellent cook, and so much fun to watch. I find myself smiling and chuckling at your light-hearted approach. 😊
Aww, thanks so much!
I'm from Maine and have never met a pastry chef. Sad because i have a major sweet tooth.
I live in Maine and am certainly NOT a pastry chef. Just enjoy the videos haha
@@rachelgarbe3932 haha…same!
I’m not from Maine, but love John’s videos, too 😊
I tried making this once because I was bored and I had the ingredients on hand and now this is my go-to pie when my family asks for a sweet treat! ❤❤ Thank you so much! This was an easy and delicious recipe.
The custard was amazing !! Thank you for sharing your delicious recipes ❤️❤️❤️
So I actually started out making your cream pie and then decided to add the bananas. SOOO GOOOD! The custard can be eaten alone, I love it. Thanks so much for such wonderful recipes. I have been baking for many years and have my favorites but your recipes are right up on the top of my list!
Watching you spaz over the cornstarch is too cute. 😂😂😂
My mother used to eat cornstarch as a snack. By the spoonfuls . Until the day she choked on it. That cured the addiction.
I'm the same with that fake velvet, makes my skin crawl
It was really weird.
I love to watch his videos so, exact and the way he walks you step by step makes it so easy and well to understand it..Thank you Preppy 😊

Just made this last night and it was sooo delicious!!! I also followed your pie crust video (1st time ever making a crust of any kind) and I nailed it!!! Thank you!!! You are a great instructor!!!
This looks so delicious. Thanks for being your cheery self. It really brightened my day. My brother died last week and we are devastated. Cooking/baking always brings a ray of sunshine to a bad day.

You explained this very well so I decided to try this recipe out today with my granddaughter, and it was phenomenal. My great grands enjoyed it very much. I look forward to trying more of your recipes. Thank you
you are one happy, lively, jolly teacher!!! i had tried some of your recipes and, even if they didn't turn out as good as it looks on your recipes, the taste are definitely amazing!!! bless you, sir, and more power! thank you for being so generous in sharing your talent to us!
I followed his instructions to the T! But, my first pie was super runny. If anyone is making this you definitely have to put more egg yolks, at least 4 and do 2 cups milk instead of three! Also, 1/4 cup cornstarch is definitely not enough put 1/3 cup instead. But, the recipe is still bomb though! There were just a few hiccups in his recipe.
When making the filling MAKE SURE that sucker is boiling/bubbling! This will cook the eggs through and mix it well into the pudding. Then, chilling it in the fridge overnight will make it PERFECT. TRUST ME! I made this shit three times.
If your filling is still runny and you don't want to put flour or more corn starch add 2 MORE EGG YOLKS to the cool mix, whisk it up, then put it back on the stove and whisk until it bubbles/boils. It should thicken up quick!
Thank you!!!!! I followed the instructions to a T also. I also cooked it longer than he said and mine is so runny it’s inedible. Trying again with your tips!
Mine is runny as well, definitely need more corn starch less milk
Didn’t he say a third of a cup in his recipe? 🤔
Idk, I followed his instructions exactly as well and mine is certainly not runny! Maybe it's because of cooking time?
Samething happened to me. I just added more cornstarch.
Now, this is how a Banana Cream Pie should be made! Yummy
I made this pie for my nephew's girlfriend's Birthday last Saturday. I had never made Banana Cream Pie before, which is her favorite pie, and was amazed at how easy it was to make. I was, also, amazed at how awesome it tastes! It was quite a hit and I've been asked to make it for Thanksgiving. Best Banana Cream Pie, I've ever had! Thanks, John!
Trying to find someone that cooks & bakes that I can relate to & enjoy their videos is difficult because there are so many to choose from, but you are my favorite!i love your recipes but mostly you make baking & cooking so much fun & easy!Thank you❤
I always wondered what went into a banana cream pie as they just weren't a thing in Australia when I was a kid but you solved the mystery for me and it's not as out of the ordinary for we Aussies as I would have thought. One of my favourites and also a regular dessert over here when I was a kid was banana custard with whipped cream on top and this is just that in a pie shell. I must admit it looks much more attractive in this format and just as tasty, I'm sure. Mystery now solved and I'll definitely be serving this up soon. Yum!
I love your videos. Being a new baker, it is wonderful to have someone that explains each step and is easy to follow. Thank you! The pie came out beautifully for my husband for Valentine's Day!💕
TY, This is our new family tradition for every special occasion ❤❤!!!!
Made this yesterday!! Super easy to make !! It tasted amazing!! The pie crust was sooooo good!
I’ll be trying this soon! Love all your recipes!
Just made this tonight for my dad's 61st birthday tomorrow! Can't wait to finish it up with whipped cream and more bananas. 🍌💛 This was my first time making custard/pudding on a stovetop like this..... O M G 😲 SO DELICIOUS! I ate whatever leftover I could from the pot.. and the bowl.. And the spatula.. 😂😂
Did you follow the recipe he was saying or the recipe that was written cuz the measurements were different
You gotta lick the bowl and spatula. It' tradition....l o l

Vanilla custard is the way to go!! Good job. That’s a lot of Love you put in that banana pie.
Hey John, I’ve tried the bulk of your cheesecake recipes and they’ve all turned out flawlessly. I’d love to see a video on a banana cream cheesecake!
Banana cream pie was a favorite of mine since I was little. I haven't had it for years and I decided I would make banana cream pie for Thanksgiving rhis year. It was so good it brought me to tears! This is the best recipes ever! Thank you Thank you Thank you!
Made this pie this last weekend and WOW is all I can say ! It was gone within 30 min and not everyone was honored to have a piece , note to self make TWO next time !
Thank you !
You have the neatest kitchen tools, love all the cooper, pastry mat, and the those cake pan bands - which the guy at Sur La Table had never heard of.
Bananas are my favourite fruit so making this pie is an absolute must 😋
Your baking videos are so incredible! I can’t wait start baking!
I just made this and my whole family loved it! It was amazing

Banana cream pie is my favorite pie when done right! I think I'll try this recipe this weekend!

John, love watching your videos and your recipes are very good! Love the kitchen and your ability to laugh at yourself! You make people feel they can do it, too! Keep up the good work!
Hi John Kanell, thanks for sharing lovely information and skills. Started baking at 48 as an hobby. Tried my hands on Banana Pie on my 11 years old daughters request. The efforts paid off as I was considered a caring dad! Efforts are on as the expectations are rising, so God bless you with abundance of valuable information and happiness sharing. Thanks a ton.
Chocking on my saliva looking at that pie John...and that golden crust 😋😋😋👍👍👍sooo delicious
I love this recipe! I didn't have corn starch but the potato starch worked just as well. I used apple cider vinegar instead of the vodka. My grandmother used vinegar in her crust.
What vodka? I didn’t see in the recipe or hear in the video any mention of vodka.
It was my first time doing banana cream pie and tbh didn't expect a good pie but wow! This recipe is amazing!! Love it
Wow 😮 beautiful pie crust and looks delicious 😋 thank you 🙏
Yes, three teaspoons equal one tablespoon. Thanks for the recipe!
Yeah, it's one of my pet peeves when cooks say use three teaspoons of something when they can just simply say a tablespoon.
16 T in a cup, so 1/4 cup is 4 T.
Except in Australia I believe a tbs is 4 tsp!🤷♀️ although to be honest I believe our cup measurements are different also- 250 ml =1 cup.
When my family makes it, they use boxed pudding mix, store bought pie crust, and store bought whipped topping. Not a fan of that, this homemade approach looks much better
Love your cooking techniques. I have seen many (and many) youtube videos of people cooking and some are good in their recipes and creations, others like you, are more elaborate and are able to use the "chemistry" side of cooking. So far Thomas Joseph was one of my favourites but you are equally as good (I discovered you fairly recently), and the more videos I watch, the more I realize that you know what you're doing. Thanks for all the time you spend to put these up...

Hi! Newbie here. Learning how to cook better, and watching these videos on UA-cam by different cooks has been both helpful and inspiring. I can't wait to try yours. I'm going to try your separating the egg trick for sure, because I am finding that it's not just the recipes that have been intriguing. Thanks to you and your fellow UA-cam cooks for helping us with this stuff. You totally rock!

My elderly mom’s favorite pie is Banana Cream. I always make a pie or banana dessert for her birthday. I think I’ll make your version this time. It’s similar to my regular recipe. Yum. Her birthday is this Friday, April 7th. 💛🍌
Honestly, I don't watch your videos because I'm baking, I watch them because they're therapeutic. 😍
Made this tonight, my pie is in the refrigerator and I cant wait 😍 Tried the custard and its absolutely delicious !
Used this recipe yesterday minus the crust and OMG sooooooo good!!!
‘’I just wanna give it a hug, then shove it in my mouth’’ 😂 I snorted out loud!! Love it, looks so yummy 🤤 and yes 3 tsp is 1 tbsp 😊 Thank you for sharing 💕
Can not wait to make this! Mmmmm
you seem so genuinely kind and I love you. vibes = immaculate
This is amazing. One of my favorites. Looking forward to making this pie. Thank you for this🥰🥰🥰🙌🏿🙌🏿🙌🏿🔥🔥🔥
I just did this recipe for thanksgiving and it was amazing! I did end up modifying some things though. First of all, instead of 3 cups of milk, I did 1 cup of milk and 2 cups of half and half. Also, to give the filling a subtle natural banana flavor, I roasted a banana, sauteed it, and steeped it in my milk/half & half for about 30 minutes. I saw some people recommend mashing it and blending it in the filling, but that can change the consistency and add too much air. I also added another egg yolk because I found it wasn't as rich as I'd like. Lastly, the measurements in the video are different compared to the recipe measurements, but I'd recommend following the video measurements.
Agree, it messed up my thickness per cornstarch
So what did you do to thicken it cause I made this recipe and it’s soo runny
@@theestheticianmommartinez6915 what made it runny ??
Same pretty runny
My favorite pie of alllll tiiiime!
Thank you thank you!!! I made this recipe for Pie Sunday and for a first try at making a pie, it was a hit!! YUM!!!

I know what I'm making for Thanksgiving this year. :D with your caramel sauce recipe. Yum! 3tsp is 1tbsp
I just wanted to say: Thank God I found you in here 🤗 I can't wait to try this recipe! Your Crust is just perfect, I doubt it will come out like yours.
Omg I finished making this pie today and omg it’s sooooo good!!! It’s a really bomb thing to make over quarantine.
I always thought the custard would have banana flavor within it.
This is the traditional method for banana cream pie though. I thought the same thing when I learned how to make it. All the banana flavor comes from the banana slices. I was thinking of making some to fill cream puffs and I think I will dice the bananas and mix it with the cream so it's more homogenous though certainly will not be as as creamy or look as smooth. In a pie where you are cutting slices the thick layer of creamy custard is a wonderful textural and visual contrast to the crust and bananas.
To my knowledge, the only way to make this custard flavored like banana is to add in artificial banana flavoring, which most people think is gross. Or at least John does and I agree with him!
@@drea4195 Some of us are allergic to artificial banana flavor. It's why I love bananas but NEVER order anything banana when I'm eating out.
I mix banana that's been mashed till it's smooth and creamy, into my custard. That gives it an extra hit of banana flavor without using artificial extracts.
Does it change the color of your custard?
@@Sorekneecap if you're asking if the mashed bananas brown, not if you mix them in throughly enough. Bananas brown from exposure to oxygen. Mixing them throughly in the custard prevents oxygen from reaching and oxidizing the banana puree.
Julie Baker i mixed them in a blender with some of the custard.
I roasted one and then steeped it in the milk so it wouldn't change the consistency.
@@lilianmartin9898 I haven't had a problem with consistency issues from mashed banana, not as long as you get it smooth when you mash it. And remember to increase the flour a bit to adjust for the extra moisture from the mashed banana. I just made a banana custard pie for Thanksgiving this year, and it came out fine. My daughter and her boyfriend even asked for a couple of pieces to take home.
I want to attempt my first ever banana cream pie and I was hoping you had a recipe on UA-cam. Of course you do! ❤This will be for my mother in law's birthday, so I'm hoping I don't mess it up 😅. She's a gem and would appreciate slop on a crust, but I want it to be nice for her. You've never steered me wrong with your recipes and teaching, so I have faith it'll turn out amazing. Thank you!
Omg! You make me excited to make deserts for this holiday season!!!!! I love you channel! 🍧🍮🍩🍪🥧🎂
I know I'll never make it, I just love seeing making it. if that's makes any sense.
The realities is Meg it's just the preppernet when it comes to cooking cooking is so easy it's the prep work that is hard that's why people have sous-chef if I had someone to do all my prep work for me oh my word but I've never had that but knowing me I don't think that they would do it to please me and they would get on my nerves sadly sadly that is true that is who I am and I do apologize for that sometimes I'm ashamed of myself
Thank YOU! You are the ONLY baker, chef etc that has ever explained the thickening process of a custard and why it is necessary to whisk that much. Without knowing why or what to look for learning to make custard is going to take a lot of curdling and mistakes. Thank you. It is sad
I made mine and it would not thicken like his, but his said out loud 1/3 cup of corn starch but his recipe said 1/4, I used the 1/4 cup in mine, and in the end it was liquidy after I left it in the fridge over night, could that have messed it up, I was whisking for like 15 min very fast on med-high heat and it never thickened like his
The banana cream pie looks so gorgeous and that crust it looked like puffed pastry!
I love how when you're baking, you add extra steps to making it more beautiful. And you also give direction to an option of having it this way that way or this is a personal decision excetera. I get all excited because I look at your food I can't wait to see it when you swap it out, and then you get to have a bite and I'm like oh my God that looks so delicious I have to make that. Hahaha thank you so much John! Your husband and children are lucky to have you. Cheers

Delicious recipe! Thank you🙏
I cut the sugar in the custard to 1/2 cup and it was delicious
Question? As he’s giving the measurements for the pie the subtitle underneath has different measurements. Why? Which are the correct amounts?
Both work, it's just based on preferance. I split the difference of the two when I made mine, but I'd recommend following the video measurements (maybe a bit less sugar though).
My mouth is watering just watching this!
That’s the point of creampie

Also, OMG the only baker that includes *mouth feel!!* Charles would be so proud of you!!
So when you're talking about adding the sugar, you SAY 1 & 1/2 cups, but the screen reads 1 & 1/4 cups.... which is the correct measurement?
I was wondering the same thing
Also corn starch is different too??
Pretty sure the screen is more accurate, he corrected his mistakes while editing. Sometimes you say wrong things without realizing it lol I can very much relate.
It was just a preference thing I believe. Like he mentioned, he put in 1/3 cup cornstarch but you can also do 1/4. I'd recommend doing what he did in the video. I made the filling based off the recipe and it didn't work out well and had to make it again using the measurements he said in the video.
I just made this for xmas dessert and put in 1 1/4 cups sugar which made it quite sweet but definitely delish. 1 1/2 would be way too much I think!
I just made a banana cream pie from scratch I am so proud I couldn't have done it without this very cool very clear instructional video you're the best
