    I really wanna do this, but my parents say I should live like a normal person. They think I am crazy because of the way I wanna live. But in my mind I say, if our ancestors can do it so can we. Not only that but I really love being out in nature.

    Mad respect young man.In my younger days I was constantly camping in the woods near where I grew up.When I was 19,went to Jamaica and camper for 3 weeks.In my 30's,went to Colorado and camped around for two weeks. Currently living in a camper and very content. +John King I too lived in the woods for 9 months, at Land's End at the extreme end of San Francisco. I got into fantastic physical condition. Although many problems came up and were very challenging. Avoiding detection is very important. On a cliff 60 feet above the mighty Pacific I had a complete campsite with a camouflage netting over everything. Something I learned in the Army in the 1960's. Finally the Coast Guard patrol discovered the campsite and sent in the Rangers, I got away to tell the tale. Pics are on my facebook profile, johnny bocchetti..

      yes it is but, do what you know is right not legal. think about it, a bird is an animal it can do whatever it wants and has or needs no money or laws. it lives with nature. but a human is also an animal but a human works for money and is controlled by these laws. a human works for this system, the matrix. we need to start working for nature and be more self reliant and sustainable. money is an illusion

      You should of taken a collapse tub to help you wash your clothes. I would of recommended a portable shower for hygienic reasons. If you are not in a reasonable area close to water then carry a bigger water jug would help. However, do keep in mind that the water jug will have weight to it. Personally, a bidet would help you keep clean while taking care of business. These are just suggestions to prepare you for a longer stay.
      How did your two weeks go? Did you cook at site or eat before you went back into the woods? Thank you for your feed back! I'm glad to hear that you accomplished this task.

Try doing it with no money and having to fly a sign. Having said all that , you have a pretty cool outlook. You're reasonable and intelligent and obviously have a lot on the ball. I can see you being a mentor and an inspiration to others. Fullfil your mission bro. P.S. Good moniker.

    I keep thinking about doing something like this, but in the country side somewhere. I actually have a wigwam in the woods, but it isn't really viable during the summer with mosquitoes and being in the shade of the canopy with slugs, but it is a cozy place the rest of the year. I feel that the best way to do food is to store up some corn meal, dried beans, winter squash, and perhaps wild rice (as this is what the natives had all winter long and the three sisters made a balanced diet). I do already own a camping woodstove and some camping cookware. I also own a flock of chickens, but my roosters would give away my location.

    • @wanderingupward1324
      @wanderingupward1324  10 років тому

      I agree. Those are good food products to keep off-grid. Any dried product will work though. Other options that I currently use are cereals, powdered milk, quinoa, garlic powder, millet, bulgur wheat, oatmeal, dried mushrooms, dried bamboo shoots, etc. I also have a small rocket-style stove and a portable white gas stove for convenience. I recommend the tent, like you said, for bugs. I'm not that tough yet...What part of the country do you live in?

    Thank you for the interesting video. I did it for a couple months 4 years ago in south Florida (totally understand you about the heat and mosquitos). I didn't have a car then so I rented an inexpensive self storage place for my stuff (shit is really what it is- LOL but true). Rarely I would sleep in there but usually I would spend overnight on the beach. I was working then, but sick of rent and I saved enough for first, last and security. I get clearly what you mean about how it can be liberating and definitely makes you look at life differently.
    I have a question: did you do it as an educational experiment mainly or was it more because you got sick of rent?
    Or was it just being a poor student kind of angle? To save money I mean by that.
    PS: the worst thing about it is the near impossibility to have a decent gf hahah...

    • @wanderingupward1324
      @wanderingupward1324  10 років тому +2

      Haha, well I mainly did it because I got really bored and I started feeling numb and domesticated. It also seemed exciting to be able to save all that money on rent. That's actually the reason I have been able to start traveling. Check out my blog at www.wanderingupward.org. I actually had a girlfriend the whole time I live out there. I found more people respected it than looked down on it, but I'm sure that was because I did it by choice rather than necessity.

    You also seem to comment against many established norms which you leaned heavily on during your stay. Friends who had a place, the coffee houses, and other places.
    I applaud you for living so long on the property which was a squatters camp, however I am wondering about the impact of that site as well as the environment with respect to trash and human waste.
    Good luck on your bike ride.

    • @matthunter8547
      @matthunter8547 9 років тому +1

      Well, at that time I was a supervisor at UPS, while living in the woods. That allowed me to save up more than enough money to take my trip (which cost me about $2000 up front for the equipment, and $250/month once on the road). I returned from the trip after three months of traveling when my dad was diagnosed with cancer. Since back I have been working a weekend job doing semi truck dispatch at a transportation company and working with an edible landscape company. I'm working on supporting myself through permaculture/sustainable development, but what that means is that most of my time is spent with my hands in the dirt and trying to help develop an engaged permaculture community in my area. I'm about to start re-organizing my blog to reflect that bigger picture rather than focus primarily on my bike trip - just haven't gotten around to it. I'll begin traveling again once I meet a few of my goals here. Where are you out of?

You don't know me from anywhere but you're one of my biggest inspirations and you're videos help me a lot and I appreciate them. Thanks! I'm pretty much taking the trip to move out and be free. I haven't started yet but in a few months when I get everything together I plan on heading South and/or West. I didn't realize you were working so much good for you. Permaculture is great! I'm learning about it through your stuff. I think I'm really going to try the bucket idea, you think a cheap $4 Home Depot bucket and lid will work good? What size?

    • @wanderingupward1324
      @wanderingupward1324  9 років тому

      CTFUvegan2014 Thanks, that's really kind of you to say. I think the home depot bucket will work if it will fit onto your bike. Another issue you might find with that is those lids take a lot of prying and pushing to get on and off, and if it's secured with bungees that might be a problem. Let us know what you find out. If you can find a local pool supply store they generally give away those little three gallon buckets with the twist lids, though I can imagine there may not be as many pool supply stores in Michigan as there are in Florida.
