My highlight of the design of this car is the way they achieved a beautiful front with no grille. I think their trick is the way the front end is so pointy so that it can reflect the ground on the lower half, hiding the amount of painted plain bodywork. The proportions of this car say it's mid-engined under our usual expectations. Electric sportscars will likely tend to have this mid-engined look with a very short bonnet. I think it's actually too bad that we are going to lose the look of long bonnets and long prestige gaps the classic front-engined Grand Tourers have.
I get 370z/400 vibes with a touch of mid engine proportions. Very good looking yet there is something clinical about it. For some reason it’s difficult to make a car look futuristic without this clinical/appliance-ish vibe occurring. For an EV though, they got it right. Nice review! I love the look of this car and the whole design language of Polestar. I do need to point out that the light design is not based on a Marvel character but the actual Norse mythology. The Viking god and his hammer date back much farther than the recent popular culture and comics. I guess the true history should not be news to anyone but to me mentioning Marvel sounded little off in the video.
Chunky and almost monolithic wheels on this car made me so excited because cars, nowadays, have rims that have so many thin spokes that are sometimes not even colored but just marked with a few white thin lines. These are, however, looking pretty solid
I like the design at first sight, but somehow it doesn’t get me that excited. Looks a bit too clinical, maybe? I’ll wait for the production version. I find that Polestar 2 looks great on the road. This one too needs to be seen on the road.

They look almost identical to their concept versions (better in some ways even). I've got to say, the first thing that jumped out at me when seeing it for the first time was the Nissan R35 GTR roofline, it's done so well that it still looks gorgeous in both top-down and top-up configs. Most other hard-top convertibles (i.e Porsche 911 convertible) look chunky at the rear with the top down, while this one still looks sleek.

This is the design I wish Tesla has. For my taste Tesla is too “flowy” and looks super similar to Mazda (which makes sense as Holzhausen used to be Mazda’s lead designer)
It is true. In fact I remember clearly when Mazda 6 design was first made public, and it actually went into production pretty much unchanged. I kind of think that was the moment when the "flowy" muscle sedan was introduced and it lasts to this day.
It’s beautifully proportioned. I like the thin camera wing mirrors. Very aerodynamic but probably gives better visibility than traditional mirrors, with no blind spot.
This car is a beauty in my opinion, can't wait to see the production design. Reminds of the sedan: . The Hopium is bigger and with a more rounded design of course
Hey, great analysis! It's amazing to see how old-ish Volvo concept cars like the 3CC and YCC still have an impact on the design language of Polestar's future models.
This is my ultimate dream car. I can’t say enough about the design. I think it’s gorgeous. I love the transitions between surface materials. The edge treatments and lack of exterior surface trim creates a sleek, modern, look that is unique. It’s so beautiful up close !!
I agree with the other comments of some Nissan Z influences and perhaps Ferrari at the front. Overall a very pleasing design and I think they are heading in a positive direction as more fluid than the previous models.
As a industrial designer I find this video the best so far as it relates to my profession, please do some videos on product design. Thank you for the chanell and all you do, I learn a lot listening to your toughts wich I find refreshing. This project is exciting to look at as I belive we are in an era where industrial and car design are coming closer with emerging autonomous vehicles.
I concur with your assessment of the 02 Concept, Frank. It will be a shame if the production version loses the tension in this design. It is truly stunning.
I’m no designer but wow this car is good - not a bad view, not a bad feature (although the drone is silly - the design alone does the talking). To me, one of the best, most coherent concepts I’ve seen for a very long time! Truly a work of art!
They really seem to be leaning on the volume of the wheels and arches, with that low horizontal line at the front seeming a clever way of pulling back negative space underneath at the front (and back) to suggest airflow without big grilles and vents, which I love. Very un-BMW
Another designer pointed out that the 0₂ lines have a striking resemblance to Daniel Simon's futuristic artwork and concepts (see e.g. the machines, weapons, architecture and costumes across the Oblivion movie). Which is very good!
I don't think that product design or product design elements are antithetical to notions or expressions of passion and I think that this Polestar design is actually very heavily influenced (not subtly influenced) by, not only modern product design, but in particular modern electronics and appliances. These are fitting references in the design language of an era of emergent electric sports cars. Sports cars, particularly in their early history, represented cutting edge technology, not nostalgia or tradition. I think this is a refreshingly honest and intelligent modern successor to that history of innovation in automotive design. It's the spirit of a sports car, not the slavish adherence to superficial detail or form, that makes for a good design reference to the past. This allows for new expressions to be grounded while also looking forwards. In their subtle, grown-up approach to design, Polestar have been demonstrating that passion, relevance and refined, disciplined design can be done, even in the automotive industry, even now. Long overdue - well done Polestar!
I'm a big fan of folded paper designs so enjoy this one a lot, and I'll admit, I didn't know a thing about the O2 until I clicked on this vid. All the style signatures being projected I enjoy. They're new and fresh and somehow, very Scandinavian too. Both Saab and Volvo have always been a bit left of centre for me and this is no different. Side profile looks a little dumpy to me - I feel that the wheelbase could be a tad longer - but love the trailing roofline and nice to see a pair of (flattened) butteresses on the convertible. I'd like to know a bit more about its packaging. Assuming this is a full EV then for a 2+2, I'd want to know where everything fits. Look forward to the road-going version...
@@4literv6 those are honorable mentions…the pinninfarina looks too much like a Ferrari SF90…not a bad thing. The others not a big fan. Just my personal 2 cents.

Frank talking Scandinavian design…it’s gonna be a good day. The head lamps look like the emblem split apart and mirrored, brills. The whole car does! Love it! Maybe we’ll get real lucky and see them go hydrogen 🤗
The production versions can be even more compelling when it still looks incredible despite production compromises. Curious to see if the accent lights will still look sexy.
Great review, Frank--always with clear and concise insights into *the why* behind various design choices. Choices, at the concept phase, that are in many ways driven by strategic business considerations as much as by the art of it. Kudos to Polestar (and corporate parents, Volvo and Geeley), for delivering on a fresh new approach to human transportation, à la an EV sports car.
There's very little on the market today that I look at and think to myself "man, that's a nice looking car". Having said that, I don't mind the look of the O2. They've managed to design something with unique character while refraining from the garish nonsense so many other cars suffer from. I'm also digging the pseudo-fastback look of the hardtop, though I'd kinda prefer they get rid of the drone thing and extend the fastback towards the back a little bit more
when i first saw the side view, it reminded me of the Scion tc, so i went and pulled up a picture of the Polestar 02 and the tc next to each other on a side view and they both had many details that looked similar. Details such as the rear bumper, front bumper, window shape, and length of the car.
I think what makes this car to be so desirable, is the term "Honesty of the design", the last cars that had the same feeling to them were the 2007 Audi S5 and the cars from that era that followed suit. Simple yet sophisticated and looking functional at the same time.
As a Polestar fan I was hoping you like it :). One look I don't like is the area above the rear wheels. I wish it would look slightly more organic and less folded.
Hey Frank! your videos are amazing. You always talk about emotions like - reliability, strong, etc, can you talk about how to decode it? meaning, how is reliability shown physically onto the design of the car ?
Clean Intelegent timeless sophisticated minimalism like a Bang and Olufsen stereo system. Glass graphic has a Bertone Stratos/Lotus Evora "Helmet visor feel" I like this design language alot, other automobile manufacturers should be looking at this design approach .
Ferrari-ish headlights, always a winner. Great design, didn't see the car before. A bit too sharp for my taste, i love round forms. But i do think they nailed their very own approach with this. If there only was an engine built in, one like there was in the T5R f.e. edit: i don't really like the wheels, for me they can't be enough filigree
The proportions of the O2 especially from the side view give me strong SW20 Toyota MR2 vibes. On Polestar's production-intent concepts, if you take a look at the Polestar Precept, and then the production version the Polestar 5, there's been surprisingly minimal changes from the concept to the production version, mostly just minor tweaks like the wheels being slightly smaller, conventional rear doors instead of suicide doors, etc.
I admit I'm obsessed with car faces, and not only the beautiful ones. My favorite is still the Alfa Montreal with the eyebrow slats partially covering the lamps (I think Frank calls that sort of thing "lazy eyes", which I get). Getting more out there, I'm nuts about the 1958 & 59 Dodge Custom Royal Lancer. They're over-designed and unharmonious, but I can't help myself. Of course, Ferraris from the late '50s through mid '60s probably have the most loved front designs. One more--I prefer the Porsche 356 face to the 911 because it looks like a dolphin. So this is a roundabout way of saying I'm not there with this Polestar's face; not enough character.
Certainly with the assistance of your explanation Frank, my appreciation for this design.skyrocketed! Purity, honesty, Scandinavian, product design vs car design, Italian subtlety and sensitivity, thanks Frank!
Polestar is doing what BMW, MB and even Audi should have continued with their design direction. The Polestar design language is just truly gorgeous. Clean, minimalist lines, unique brand identity (just like Volvo) and I’m happy to witness this. A clear standout moment for the brand while other companies continue with ugly designs and far away from its original roots.
What do you think about the first Ferrari SUV, the Ferrari Purosangue? It's already planned to come into production by 2023. They have already made 2 or 3 prototypes.
The question 'How did they do that?' is a good summary of the O2. It manages to look sharp and clean, yet still retains enough organic character to not be intimidating like the Tesla Cybertruck, for example.
Polestar describes themselves as "an electric performance car brand". When looking at the O2 I see its method of propulsion freeing its designers vs. constraining them. There's no need to consider hardpoints related to drivetrain size or placement. Sure, there are plenty of gimmicks, but I see those as being useful to stir up interest, to add bait to clicks. The core design itself works and manages to be, like you said, Frank, Scandinavian. I've said that Swedes make Germans seem like Italians, but that doesn't mean that their designs are without passion. Again, the O2's method of propulsion is less of a constraint than an opportunity. My kudos to Maximilian Missoni for exploiting this opportunity. It's a real step forward for design in this age.
The Polestar 5 which is a production car is basically the production version of this concept. Rather than it being a coupe though, they made it a 4 door GT but the front and back are almost exactly like this concept. Very exciting cars to come out of this company.
My highlight of the design of this car is the way they achieved a beautiful front with no grille. I think their trick is the way the front end is so pointy so that it can reflect the ground on the lower half, hiding the amount of painted plain bodywork.

I think it's actually too bad that we are going to lose the look of long bonnets and long prestige gaps the classic front-engined Grand Tourers have.
That's a good point, the shadows do a good job of hiding the blank space. Clever design.
Agreed. I do think it could be a pioneer for no-grille electric cars.

Every artist needs a inspiration ;)
Time to increase the investment in this brand. Future looking bright. 👌
I love the way the thin black lines on the wheels align with the shutlines.
👍
Congrats on 200k
Thanks!
I concur with your assessment of the 02 Concept, Frank. It will be a shame if the production version loses the tension in this design. It is truly stunning.
Thanks Todd! 👍
Can you comment on the design of the Lotus Evija
The thumbnail is intriguing
I’m no designer but wow this car is good - not a bad view, not a bad feature (although the drone is silly - the design alone does the talking). To me, one of the best, most coherent concepts I’ve seen for a very long time! Truly a work of art!
They really seem to be leaning on the volume of the wheels and arches, with that low horizontal line at the front seeming a clever way of pulling back negative space underneath at the front (and back) to suggest airflow without big grilles and vents, which I love. Very un-BMW
Excellent review, Mr Stephenson!
We have asked on instagram to review this car. So can't wait to watch this analysis
I didn’t realise Polestar came from Volvo. Interesting!
This coupe and the 4 door Precept are the best looking EV’s designs so far. STUNNING 🙌🏽
What about the piech gt2? Apex ap-0? Pinninfarina Batista? Gen2 tesla roadster? Aspark owl? Lotus evija? 🤔
@@4literv6 those are honorable mentions…the pinninfarina looks too much like a Ferrari SF90…not a bad thing. The others not a big fan. Just my personal 2 cents.
@@bcraftin7846 Porsche mission r then? Maserati mc20 ev? 😁
@@4literv6 lol…ok well I thought we were referring to all electric? MC20 is beautiful. I think it definitely better looking the new Ferrari 296. 🤷♂️
@@bcraftin7846 their is an ev version of the mc20 coming next year. It's supposed to be even higher performance to. They claim it'll be slightly sleeker looking with less ducts and cleaned up side aero since the ev powertrain doesn't need as much airflow overall.
The softness contour and tension of line in this design is outstanding.
Frank talking Scandinavian design…it’s gonna be a good day. The head lamps look like the emblem split apart and mirrored, brills. The whole car does! Love it! Maybe we’ll get real lucky and see them go hydrogen 🤗
Recently watched your 'chasing perfect' documentary I would definitely recommend.
Totally in love with the design of this car except for the very harsh back/rear including the tail lights
If they build that, I will buy it. Brilliant design.
Lovely design, they should build it. Good to see the kept the hammer, but gave it a twist.
I think what makes this car to be so desirable, is the term "Honesty of the design", the last cars that had the same feeling to them were the 2007 Audi S5 and the cars from that era that followed suit. Simple yet sophisticated and looking functional at the same time.
You’re absolutely right ! Great video
Whoever designed this clearly was smitten with the rear window treatment of the SF90.
The charging light on side of the car is so you can see when it is done while you eat across the street by a window.
And then you order coffee or pay and leave?
Ferrari-ish headlights, always a winner. Great design, didn't see the car before. A bit too sharp for my taste, i love round forms. But i do think they nailed their very own approach with this. If there only was an engine built in, one like there was in the T5R f.e.
edit: i don't really like the wheels, for me they can't be enough filigree
Yeah , those headlights look like from Ferrari , look cool !
@@gregorygant4242 .....nope, more like slight resemblance to Lotus Evija.
Frank, regarding the wheel design, you were previously adamant that 4 spoke was a "no no".
Yes Simon, 5 holes would’ve been better on the O2.
Congratulations on 200K Subs!
Hopefully you`ll release a celebration video
Thanks!
I’m a big fan of the Polestar 1. It’s pretty much perfect in my eyes.
It's been discontinued 😢
@@ethanb4ughan did it just start raining?
It looks almost just like the Volvo Concept Coupe. It is a very beautiful design.
Certainly with the assistance of your explanation Frank, my appreciation for this design.skyrocketed! Purity, honesty, Scandinavian, product design vs car design, Italian subtlety and sensitivity, thanks Frank!
👍
Frank: “We don’t need the huge radiators that we’re seeing in abundance”
BMW: YOU TAKE THAT BACK!
im not a fan of volvo or its subbrand polestar but this car looks sick
Great video , would love to see your opinions on cars from the game Rocket league
Hi, I'm a student doing a "Designely Loops" course, and if I'm not wrong, you're one of the 'Expert Designers', right!?
Good quality video. Lucid Air design review next please
The Polestar 5 which is a production car is basically the production version of this concept. Rather than it being a coupe though, they made it a 4 door GT but the front and back are almost exactly like this concept. Very exciting cars to come out of this company.
