On the note of music, its important to the entire game. Not only is Answers the most important song in the game, but your ability to understand Dragonsong also changes through the course of the expansion. Songs in this game take on new meaning as your perspective at certain points in the story change. The music is also used very effectively to enhance and at times literally tell the story, so while turning it off in a city or housing area might be a good call after a while, you really want it on when running the story. Never underestimate the value or the specific choices of music used in FFXIV, you'll be missing out.
Galactic has given me the run down to listen to the music, listen to the meaning and you'll see why it's such a huge deal. I really think as an outsider I missed that point at first
@@CaffeinatedDad oh yes, the interplay between the lyrics and what they mean evolves with the plot! So reflecting only at the very end might be too late. An upcoming song contrasts 'two', and who or what that is keeps changing and swapping.
If one of the main theme songs pops up in game it's a good time to consider the lyrics of the version of the song you're hearing in context of the story point you're at. Not always something easy to do mid stream but reflecting on it can help enhance the story.
The music is so vital in this game... I actually have thrown together a rough draft of a set of counter-lyrics to the final version of 'Dragonsong' as well.
@CaffeinatedDad straight up some songs are not only artful but tell or hint at certain elements of the game. When you're fully caught up, I recommend Jocats video about liet motifs. Don't watch it till you're in Endwalker patch content, but God is it good.
i get teary eyed every time i see cinematics or hear the dramatic ffxiv music, even if its not sad, because it reminds me of everything we've been through and all the emotions felt at the end. it hits every time
I've always viewed ff14 trailers as not something there to pull in new players but rather something to hype up current/old players while potentially tickling the interest of general FF fans and the curious alike. Something closer to an anime/tv shows different season intros and further away from something like a movie trailer.
Context does matter a lot in this game! A lot of music, lyrics or scenes or trailers get new layers of meaning even within one expansion beginning vs end, not to mention from expansion to expansion. And in my experience sometimes the context is SO important that the piece loses a large part of its emotional value without it. It may explain why ppl who skip the story struggle to reconnect with it later but also why this community has such a large base of people watching others experience the story for the first time. Not only you get to see the reactions, but also look at the events with your new understanding of context. Also you have really great insights on the game and its aspects, been really enjoying following your experience, glad you like it here!
It's always best to remember that SE makes it's trailers for it's gamers who are playing the game & get them excited for what's coming next. ARR's trailer is tough because we can't play 1.0 any more but it does help a lot knowing how SE literally had the 1.0 players playing the calamity that we're seeing in the ARR trailer. Knowing that they, with no warning, were watching the red moon get larger, were running from sudden monster raids in the cities, & the MSQ was bringing the Garlic Bread Empire down on them...
@@51953bdog I didn’t play 1.0, other than the early open beta, but I loved the music in the ARR trailer. Then I caught up to Endwalker and Answers hits SO much harder now with the full context. Definitely tear up listening to it, too.
What I think is insane is how the music means so much more after the playthriugh but answers I feel like has a larger play especially for the 1.0 players because it almost gives them a bit of an epic finale to the world they knew
Music is a huge part of the game. They use it to really convey the emotions they want, and the wide variety you will experience is just so amazing. From "high gothic" to freaking "pop" music, you will not be wanting for great music.
Exactly! That's what I've been saying for a while now. They have found music that really does so much for the scene as well as conveying emotions that I have been now focusing the music each time it comes on
I think it was also an internal developer code name, but not meant to be canonical. I've always hated it personally and even prefer the more generic "warrior of light"
Heavensward is the expansion I started playing in, and the gothic/medieval aesthetic is a favorite of mine, so maybe I'm incredibly biased... But the music, imagery, plot tension, etc. included in the Heavensward trailer makes it my absolute favorite out of all of them. Still gives me goosebumps.
One thing that hit me during this trailer as a longtime fan. The dragoons are always portrayed as loners. Perhaps the last of their clan. And for Heavensward? The war is on. SQUAD UP!
I think your trailer reaction highlights the games greatest strength and it's largest weakness, such I'm sure you're already aware of. It rewards investment and paying attention to an insane degree - but also that can leave it feeling weird or even alienating to someone who rushed through the story and didn't really take in the scenes along the way. I'm glad you've finally stepped into Ishgard. I've been excited to see your reaction to the end of 2.5, which is where many people will say "omg now I need to know what happens next"
I will say this with assurance of NO SPOILERS: A Realm Reborn's "Trailer" isn't truly a trailer, but two videos glued together. The battle and Bahamut was the end cinematic of 1.0 ending with Bahamut's roar as the light fills the screen to Louisoix's look of resignation. That released at the end of 1.0 for the server shut down (and it was around the time of WoW: Cataclysm, so many of us paying attention to both sure felt Bahamut's destruction outshone Deathwing). The second half of the video, after the Warriors of Light appear in the present, the Grand Companies on chocobos, seeing Odin & Bahamut, etc. that's all the Realm Reborn trailer. Heavensward is definitely story heavy, complete with spoilers for Realm Reborn. Stormblood is more traditional in its approach of showing you some new locations and job for the expansion, yet still tied into the story in ways I don't feel spoil much. Then there's Shadowbringers which ties directly into the final patch of Stormblood and is a string of "Huh? What? HUH? WHAT?" moments as none of it makes sense. It's the best trailer for "more questions than answers" based on what you know when you first see it, even after completing all of Stormblood's story. AND special bonus: The trailer tells you more than you realize if you go back and watch it again AFTER finishing Shadowbringers. And then Endwalker is just.....story goodness all around without really spoiling too much. But it also holds an Easter Egg you won't realize until you finish Endwalker and rewatch it. And Dawntrail is more traditional (because it's starting a new tale) with glimpses of new areas and small hints of a new story. Of course, every trailer has potential spoilers because you'll see "Oh this character or that character appeared, so I guess they're going to be in that expansion." I still recommend all the trailers be viewed only at the right time of having completed the prior expansion, even though many aren't as contextual as ARR > HW.
Welcome to Heavensward! Yeah, context truly matters in FF14. Especially the music! The main songs of each expansion can have drastically different meanings as you progress!
The music is *why* I started playing this game. I got the new Theatrhythm game and as I played through the FFXIV course I got more and more curious about the context for this AMAZING music. Then I hit the final boss theme for Shadowbringers and thus began my journey down the rabbit hole and just under a year later I'm never leaving.
Every trailer for this game's expansion have been peak moments of hype for me, but nothing can replace that feeling of Finishing ARR for the first time, go through the banquet and everything that follow, sit down, watch the trailer and then walk into Ishgard with my friends. Then logging off for the night.
@@CaffeinatedDad It was a good ending point for us, end on a high and come back hyped as fuck when we next had time. But I can respect the need to continue, this story is very good at setting its hook on you

The ARR trailer was what sold me right away when I saw it, and hearing that it didn't quite hit the mark with someone caused me to consider other types of context. I was playing WoW at the time and if you did the Cataclysm expansion when it was current, it's nearly impossible to not draw comparisons (see the size of bahamut vs deathwing for example). I don't know how much of that was intentional vs just a happy accident while they were picking up the pieces after 1.0 but whatever the case it did hit and they capitalized on it. At that time I didn't know anything about Eorzea but I found myself willing to find out. Certainly I tell people to not watch it until at LEAST they finished the x.5 patch quests and have started the x.0 main story. I'd never considered that approach. Now that I am, the main thought that comes to mind is that some of the details in the trailers are designed around hyping (current) players right before the release, and sometimes they even tease future characters or story only to subvert expectations when you do the actual main story quests. The biggest example is probably the shadowbringers trailer, where some of the mystery they generate won't be a mystery if you've done all the 5.0 story.
It appears I have quite the workload ahead of me then. I think it of paramount importance for co text to be the main feature of why these games can be so damn good. The trailer for WoW draws in new people whereas dfxiv keeps the player base excite

ARR trailer only makes sense if you played v1.0 -- Bahamut is Yoshi-P recreating Eorzea from the ashes. You should search for the v1.0 in-game event where you can literally see Bahamut about to destroy the world. Up until today, Heavensward is still has the best story telling followed by Shadowbringer -- the rest are meh. Welcome to the dragoon corps.
When I played ARR into HW back in the day, I would go back into Uldah after we fled to talk to the guards and people..they all treat you like shit..i think that kind of detail was great..they went through and changed everyone's small talk dialogue in Uldah.
Entering Ishgard through those gates for the first time was a big deal for some players. It was the gates that you could not enter in 1.0. this. area was never put in. New players would not have known the diff. if they had skipped over this. They realized the promise made from 1,0 in 2.0. Just one of the reasons their. fan base is loyal .
Heavensward keeps it real, yes we're the Hero, but we're also a human in this world, and not everybody likes what we're doing, we, as a character, has been brought into a desperate situation -- not by a cartoonish villain we're destined to defeat, but by the very people of this world, struggling with their own ambitions and beliefs and doing what's right for them. The introduction to the expansion happens naturally within the lore, and that's a huge win of the writing team as this never quite happens again in the future expansions.
Just wait till you get to the most artsy trailer. Imho Shadowbringers had a poetic soul behind it, and it shows in the trailer. Its also the expansion that I recommend rewatching the trailer after playing through the main story, since a few clever bits of foreshadow will suddenly make sense.
This is the expansion that did it for me, (of course Shadowbringer is awesome and the best) But this one is the one that truly make me feel the story telling and action of the game, what I felt is like Realm Reborn is a political warfare while Heavensward is just open war for survival (as the trailer shows so no spoilers at all)
3:03 --- Not Estinien, but basically any dragoon of their order: they all wear the same armor. 10:35 --- Same. I cant watch any of the trailers without bursting into tears. Now, I get emotional when I hear music, it just gets to me and it goes through my bones - no kidding. So when I watch these... yeah, say good bye to composure.
@@livingreverie5951 ... Yeah sure, but... Well, first, Estinien ISNT your job mentor XD Estinien is part of the ARR job quests and he features at the veeeeery end of the SB job quest. Your mentor is Ser Alberic, and by another token a handful of other dragoons XD And second... Dragoons are just the posterboys of HW and Estinien one of them. Of course, it COULD be him in the trailer, but he could also be any of the dragoons we see, and by the same token none. - So, yeah... :)
@@CaffeinatedDad cool! These are not totally representative of modern raid bosses because the game and design changed a lot after stormblood, but they're iconic fights anyway. This is also before Heavensward standardized indicators so a lot of mechanics are just not clear on what they do so that's an extra challenge.
I think I rate it a tie for second with ARR. But honestly, all three of them are masterpieces. And the other two are no slouches. This is one aspect the Dev team really nails.

This is the expansion that did it for me, (of course Shadowbringer is awesome and the best) But this one is the one that truly make me feel the story telling and action of the game, what I felt is like Realm Reborn is a political warfare while Heavensward is just open war for survival (as the trailer shows so no spoilers at all)
I'm about to head into HW too (again, I made a new character after 6.1) and can't wait to re-experience it with you.
This trailer made it very hard to find any worthy replacements for the level 60 dragoon gauntlets and helmet until Endwalker patches.
Your going to love this expansion. I'm in end walker and heavens ward is still my favorite story
I started back when HW started..and became a dragoon because of it. After all these years this trailer still hits!
I mean to be fair
Many assume it Is Estinien, he wears that armor all of HW and rule of cool to our Job Mentor
I have seen that trailer so many times and I still get chill bumps 😂
I havent been able to watch your HW streams but its soooo much better than ARR. Looking forward to your time in there.
Thus far its been great!
i played ffxiv but i think its to dialoq heavy
How do we get him to do min ilvl Garuda/titan/ifrit extreme ?
I thought about sneaking those in. I've done ultima weapon extreme already thought
Heavensward is where the game goes from good to great.
Heavensward is still tied for my favorite trailer for FF14, tied with Shadowbringers for so many reasons that I cannot wait for you to discover. o7
I think I rate it a tie for second with ARR. But honestly, all three of them are masterpieces. And the other two are no slouches. This is one aspect the Dev team really nails.
The journey continues!
why do I always cry after every single cinematic of this game ?
I'm starting to see the emotions behind it... I'm worried I may cry eventually too lol
Ha! From hero to fugitive in one bloody night 😁 what a start to heavens ward
That's what I'm saying! It's insane how quickly shit hit the fan!
no video of ur reaction for the end of ARR?
From hero to 0
In like 20 minutes!
ARR trailer hits even more after latest expansion. But it must been a expierence seeing first half of it as 1.0 version shots down. Glad you enjoy the game so far. Give a extreme trials a shot for a little step up in dificulty.
Heavensward is my favorite expansion in terms of story.
It's really great so far, atmosphere is fantastic!
Maaaaaaaaaaan, all the other trailers too, can't wait to see your reactions to each one
I will get there!
Arr is... Soooo long.
You should play Nier: Automata before it's featured collaboration raid in FFXIV, for context and all that jazz.
Ehhh... might just want to have other folks to chip in context on the fly. Especially since you also want some Drakengard lore as well for that one.
