Well I have to disagree with you on this one. Don’t take it as a hater either because I wanted to see you and your crew win every stage this year. But here’s the deal… at the end of the day it’s first come first serve. Just because you find a spot doesn’t mean the other 150 anglers didn’t find it as well. Glad you talked to Becker, he’s an awesome guy it seems from his videos. Don’t forget it’s a public lake you guys are just visiting, and that is why it must be first come first serve. Pro are weekend angler. Just my opinion

If it was me pulling in an area where another angler is fishing, I’d idle up to him and say hey, I found these same fish, been in here two days, whatever, and ask how we can work it out where we can both fish our stuff and not get in each others’ way. Seems like the tension and negative stuff always happens when the second guy just heads in with the trolling motor down and does his thing. I always try and get the lay of the land and talk to the other boat if I pull in to an area. Just my perspective. Especially when you’re fishing against the same guys all the time. You have to learn to work together to an extent.
Not at all judging Jacob. Just seems better to talk it out on the front end. Similar situation with Adrian and Neal at RedCrest. The long distance boat to boat conversations never seem to go well.

Bud you obviously didn’t hear what he just said, Becker caught 0 fish on this spot so why even bother asking for permission! Also Becker was trying to figure out what wheeler was catching them on! 😂

But with live scoring these anglers know if/how/where they are catching them. JW saw Becker fish that spot and not catch anything. Then Becker saw JW on that spot catching numbers. JW was protecting his spot that Becker saw him on.

What some do not understand is how you still came to the event post trailering, and took a fifth of your travel time home to speak with fans. Most other professional anglers bolted after they lost. However, I would have rather seen a video that said, “I was wrong” instead of “here’s my perspective.” It’s never cool to cut someone off on the water no matter what the perspective is. It is what it is, and I doubt becker is up in his feelings about it more than all the "fans" that are upset. I'd bet 80% of the people getting up in their feelings about this have rolled up and snaked onto a spot in front of another person every weekend. The etiquette in the sport is LONG gone, I see it from the bank every week, hell the other night an old guy was fishing a local derb friday evening and he trolled right over my line and over the spot I was fishing while I was dragging a jig and shakey head, didn't say a word or acknowledge me standing there. I'm not gonna moan and cry, I just kept casting at his boat, not going to lie it felt REALLY good to catch the fish he probably needed right in his face while they wouldn't touch whatever he was mid strolling

I see your point and I agree with you on no cutting. But !! Here's my thoughts.
They both knew fish were in that one small depression right?? Matt couldn't figure out the bait or technique JW was using. They both knew there wasn't any fish down the grass line . They were in two specific spots. So Matt is running the grass line where he knows they aren't .. why?? Because he left the door open for JW to come in so he could see what he was using to get those big ones to bite. So I think he played JW.. like I said it wasn't about the fish. They both knew exactly where they were and weren't.. It was about how to get the big bite..

Jacob no doubt you are a great fisherman, arguably the best of the day. We can debate this issue back n forth till the cows come home. Optically what you did looks bad, plain and simple! 100% it's a competition, however that spot, is NOT your spot if you're NOT on it, those fish are NOT your fish until you catch them and put them in the boat! Tournament Fishing be it justified or not is getting a lot of bad press. I would hope you with the platform and voice you command in this Industry would want to step forward and go out of their way to try and do the right thing for your brand, the sheild you wear, that its most definitely under the microscope of the Internet fishing world and the Fishing Industry as a whole. If you truly feel how all this went down, the look you received from it and you're copacetic with it, more power to you, but you've lost me as a follower.

I don't know how much things have changed since I quit tourmament fishing, but the rule was when I was fishing was you could not cut into within 50yds of someone anchored while fishing. If it was 100 yds away, no issue, even fishing the same bank. I've fished events that the majority of fisherman were within a 1/4 mile of each because it was the most consistent place to catch bass. Guys relax and let the men fish!!

Pro fishing is more than just catching fish, if you have the opportunity to defend a spot that you know is a honey hole then that's what you should do. Letting people pressure your best spot that may be the difference between winning or even AOY would be foolish. Every fish, every ounce, every point matters at the end of the season.
I think the sport would be more interesting if more people did this or acted like KVD, Ike, etc did back in the day when people came poaching their spots.

I read the rules today. Shockingly there is nothing about distance in the MLF rules. Matt could have ties up to wheelers boat and fished the same spot as long as they dont get their lines tangled. However... no angler can be verbally confrontational with another angler for any reason.

I read the MLF rules today and there is no rule about cutting someone off or how close they can be to another boat. " As long as they don't impede or snag the other Fishermans line. In other words, Matt could have tied up to your boat and fished right beside you. What the rules constantly talk about is being " Professional " and Non-Confrontational or verbally confrontational. I guess it would be considered defense if another angler were to find you fishing some place and parked their boat in front of your boat and blocked you, since there is no rule in MLF as to distance as long as it's wrapped in the words " blocking " and they have no verbal communications with you, that way it could never be considered as confrontational. If you blow up on them for blocking you, then that is a rule violation. If we thought FSA changed the sport, pandori's box has just been opened on the new game of defensive blocking with no rules on the distance. Let the new games begin

Sometimes we assume other competitors are seeing us when catching in prefishing, but much of that is usually limited unless they're very close in proximity. I give folks about a 1/4 mile, less than that I communicate with them first. Your the best in the game right now, keep it up!👊

I don't understand why the rules won't allow two anglers having a dispute to peacefully work it out by themselves.
To be fishing at the top level, there's a level of respect and professionalism that must be followed. We don't want GOVT in our lives telling us how to live and there shouldn't have to be a ton of oversight in this sport either.
I realize this is very competitive but, when two anglers need to get on the phone and talk about a certain area where a problem occurred between them. Well let them work it out and keep the peace. It's good to have a higher authority to call if needed.. But all in all it's between them.

At least you worked it out with Matt. I’m not a tournament angler, but home lake is Lake Champlain and I’m fortunate enough to live here and know some spots that took years to find and I’m a weekend angler. Every time a tournament is here you guys find stuff quicker than flies land on sh@t lol and I always give leeway given it’s a tournament. I watched it and you seemed plenty far and seemed to protect your spot. I’ve seen others do it and it’s a different story with a tournament on the line. Other opinions of losing respect I can respect as it’s an opinion….in my eyes you and Matt discussed it….it’s done. But social media…..meh…no worries. Tight lines

I agree with you. When I first started fishing these little local tournaments here in oakridge tn I was very careful not to cut anyone off until I realized I was pretty much the only person not doing it. I got cut off almost every tournament so now I don't care I fish what I want when I want

I completely understand why you did what you did. There’s always aspects of actions that can’t be realized without an explanation. I play defense in tournaments too. Anyone who says they don’t are lying. Like you said, Jacob, only way to deal with these situations is to talk to each other and work it out. And everyone’s negative thoughts mean nothing. Competition is fierce no matter what it is in.

There are 2 ways to look at this. One is the old school way-“unwritten rule” of being respectful and not cutting him off. The other is just being that NASCAR driver that will put someone into the wall in order to get around them and win. It’s up to you to decide which type of angler you want to be. But keep in mind you have thousands of fans watching you that may think this is the right way to do things even outside of competition just fun fishing and cut someone off causing altercations on the water. This is the bad thing about tournaments that have multiple days of practice or practice at all is y’all will find the same spots. Get rid of practice, problem mostly solved 🤷🏼‍♂️

Respect! For telling it how it is. Also, you did absolutely nothing wrong if this was any other sport it’s like calling a blitz or a high-pressure package. It’s called defense and defense wins championships. There’s a reason there’s 100 yard rule in this sport people that don’t fish tournaments don’t understand that you have to adapt and overcome.

Does anybody remember the famous Vandam and Iconellie incident? Kevin ran Ike off a spot and no body hated on Kevin as bad as this. There was another comment about cutting people off in NASCAR that made complete sense. There’s 100k on the line. I’m a firm believer that Jacob would cut DC off the same way in order to win. It’s a cutthroat sport there’s no teams and you gotta look out for Number 1. Just my opinion

Some people think 50 yards of room is enough and seem think 100 yards is enough. It’s a judgement call. Becker was close enough to that spot that I wouldn’t have pulled in there.
But this stuff happens all the time and no one is perfect.
I figured Jacob didn’t think Becker was fishing that spot. Or Becker wouldn’t have fished there if he hadn’t seen Jacob catching them there.
I don’t blame Becker for not being happy about it. But I do think it’s over blown .

Here is how it is in competitive bass fishing as far as I m concerned. When the boat touches the water on tournament morning until the weigh in. There are no friends it's every man for his self. If you try to be friends out there you'll got home checkless. Wheeler you didn't do anything wrong you just played the game the same way Matt would have if he were in your position. Good job J Wheels.

Agree with you 100%! With increased pressure on all bodies of water, if you put in your time and find spots you fish them. If Matt actually knew that spot he had the ability to go straight there and fish. He chose to run the grass line 200+ yards away.

You made a good point in this video, this is competitive bass fishing at its highest level and not only that, but it’s how you make your living, so naturally you’re gonna compete to the best of your ability. But it is a competition and I understand why you did it. If Matt had known he could have caught fish there at that particular moment he probably should have stopped there first.

It's no different than hunting public land. The first one there gets the spot. I've seen people scout 100s of hours set up a tree stand to show up opening morning to have someone sitting in it and nothing they could do about it because its public. The same rules on the public water should apply.

I didn't know any of this, but what you said about social media. That is what I see and have seen for years. I've had that done to me and saw where people dogging " what i knew was thrown at me and didn't even know why." I fish for the fun and compete for the same reasons. I really can't stand the bandwagoners that jump on the post and didn't even fish that. You don't need to explain it. This world is full of opinionated people, and they are being selfish, submitting their comments without knowing the truth. I see it more. Thanks for sharing, bud.
