    =====
    In this video, I paint a marine scene in portrait format and go through the fundamentals of painting in watercolour. You'll notice that I often paint boats, but that's just because I happen to like boats. The principles I cover here should help you paint whatever subject you would like to paint.
    This picture is painted on Bockingford 200lb Not surface paper.

    I am very grateful to you for not speeding up the video so we can see the whole process in real time with the actual painting gesture. It is extremely useful and I find your "method" very liberating in many ways (not pre-wetting the sky, doing each area once, not worrying if some viridian gets into your neutral yellow/violet mix, etc.)

    Really enjoyed that, Andrew. Loved the fact that you allowed us to share in the impact of the scene as it silently emerged from the purity of an all white background. Your process of laying down the basic shapes over the entirety of your painting make it jump up off the paper as you progress.. And the process... seeing you cleaning off the palette multiple times. I've seen multiple artists working proudly from dirty palettes they never ever clean. It defines who you are as a person, plus the underlying flow and sense of movement it creates, those places where you in your mind's eye love to linger. It was comforting to see the humble bicycle standing at parade rest against the shack, telling strangers, "know that here is where I am.and here is where you want to be... a quiet, protected place of uncompromising beauty and safety".
    Lucky us!. We only have to glance up to be instantly transported back here in space and time.

    Hi Andrew, I have learnt so much from your videos. I have always had a bit of a disappointment with the medium even though I love it. I returned to it feeling much more inspired after watching your lessons.
    The way you break things down and point out the small details, which others assume as a given, is incredibly helpful. Your audio is spot on and the pace of your narration is perfect. It allows me to actually process what I am seeing on the screen.

    I'm always impressed with the freshness of your paintings. I really have to stop being so 'frugal' and start using fresh new paint from the tube instead of trying to coax tired lumps of pigment back to life. 'Touch each area once.' I hear your advice every time my hand moves to revisit an area of the paper. Thank you! You've made me a better painter.

    I am so grateful that you take the time to give us a step-by-step video approach, instead of hyper lapse. You add a wealth of knowledge by narrating along with everything you do; and it's much more authentic that you talk WHILE you paint instead of dubbing over later. I also very much enjoy the comforting, peaceful ticking of your clock in the background. I feel like I'm right in your studio.
    Thank you for inspiring me 😊

    I enjoy ALL. your videos! This one was particularly helpful w/ 'managing' the palette w/ pigment vs water, which I have struggled with mightily! I take it that you are NOT a fan of spattering? MY thought was that spattering might be a good way to define the pathway but I see that your method keeps the eye of the viewer where you want it, whereas spattering might have been distracting. As I've heard so many say, less is more! You don't have any old brushes you don't want, do you?? :). Thanks for ALWAYS putting out a wonderful, high quality, and informative tutorial. I can't wait for the next one!

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  2 роки тому +2

      Thanks for getting in touch. I don’t mind the odd accidental drip or run but I think deliberate splattering is a bit of a gimmick. And, as you say, would certainly drag the viewer’s attention to the foot of the gravel road. www.andrewpitt.co.uk

As I have just recently restarted my art after years of neglect it helps to have generous people, such as yourself, out there keeping us all inspired, curious, and hungry to do better work. Love the freshness of your paintings. I must try to paint once and not overwork. One question ... Do you pre wet the paper particularly for your skies?

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  Рік тому +1

      Thanks for getting in touch. No, I very rarely wet my paper. I don’t think it is necessary and just makes things harder - watercolour always dries lighter and adding an unknown amount of water to the paper which is going to further dilute a wash adds to the difficulties as far as I’m concerned. All the skies in my vide demonstrations were painted on dry paper. www.andrewpitt.co.uk

    amazing video that any level artist can benefit from. I am guilty of not cleaning my palette enough. But one thing that would be great that I haven't really seen covered is the half pan setup you have and most pros seem to use. • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  2 роки тому

      Thanks for your kind comments. I’m not sure I understand what you mean by ‘half pan set up’. I use Winsor and Newton tube watercolours, which I simply squeeze into the wells of my palette. I paint regularly so my paint doesn’t get time to dry out.

      I painted from a sketch, not a photograph. Relying on photographs is a mistake for inexperienced painters. If you email me I’ll send you an image of my sketch. You can contact me through my website www.andrewpitt.co.uk Thanks for your interest.

    Dear Andrew, thanks again. Indeed tl leave the lower left corner emptyish was difficult and judicious,. What I notice is you often dab into several colors without cleaning the brush in between. This really requires very gooey paint. How do you keep your paint on the palette so fresh? Before each session, do you squeeze fresh paint ? Pan colors wouldn't be easy to prevent from getting very solid blocks. Such a very technical medium is watercolor....

      Starting with fresh paint is very important. I’m often asked how I keep my paint soft. The answer is, I paint regularly! And I squeeze fresh paint out once it starts to dry out. Tube paint is on the whole better than pans. I use Winsor and Newton watercolour paint. Thanks for your interest.

    Dear Andrew, sincere thanks. Hopefully you are safe and well after the storm... Ho do you prevent muddy, matt, awful darks when you layer, like you did around the roof? In fact not only darks any color when too little water is used. Thank you. Best regards and greetings from Brussels.

      Thanks for getting in touch. I think the key to avoiding muddiness is when over painting try to avoid disturbing the under layers. Although I have to say it is all a bit of a mystery to me as well. All’s well here, thanks, as I hope is with you on the other side of the North Sea.

    Andrew i have a little plein aire set is there a set of tubes youd recommend for the beginner? as i as you say never feel the colours come through

      Start with two blues, two reds and two yellows and gradually add new colours. Get to know the mixtures. But also accept the limitations. There is a video on my website which covers all my painting equipment and materials, including all the colours I use. Good luck.

    sorry andrew, forgot to add this to last comment: another subject that would be great if you can would be to talk about your source photograph - do you take them yourself? are they public domain uncopyrighted so that if you do a demo I could do one of my own without violating any copyright if I may want to sell it some day (I should be so lucky) lol. But I have just recently started selling some of my work. I wish I lived in europe with all the amazing harbors and castles and lighthouses!

      My demonstrations are from sketches, rather than photographs. They are of scenes I have painted outside so I am familiar with the subject. You have to be very experienced to work from photographs. It is important to do lots of plein air work first. By all means copy any of my paintings if you think it will help you develop your own style. Amd feel free to sell. There is a video on my website, www.andrewpitt.co.uk which covers all my painting materials including my colours.Thanks for your interest.

    What sizes if the Chinese brushes (1-6) do you find most useful?

    • @AndrewPittArtist
      @AndrewPittArtist  2 роки тому +1

      I’m afraid my brushes are so old the numbers have either worn off or were never there in the first place. And they were printed in Chinese. There is a video on my UA-cam channel which covers all my painting equipment, including my brushes, which will give you a better idea of relative size. Hope this helps.
