Hey Del, nothing to do with this video (though i am in the process of watching it), but I thought I'd let you know that i finished my first cbg this evening. Mostly scrap wood and a cardstock cigar box I got for free, plus about $15 in supplies. I'm calling it, "mistakes were made". I wanted to say thanks, I didn't follow anyone's plans step by step, but I'm pretty sure I got more inspiration from your channel than anywhere else.

I just drilled a hole in a scrap piece of wood so that the length of bullet shell I want is sticking out of the whole and just cut it off with a hack saw. Works well for me 🤷‍♂️ loving this build, always love the challenges of building with new objects/ materials!

Might try a tubbing cutter Del

Me, I'd insert a dowel rod to hold the cartridge then cut them with a scroll saw or hacksaw.

Try using a tubing cutter for the shells

It will depend on how close you're trying to cut the casings from the head. Near the head on a centerfire case the brass is essentially solid other than the flash hole. Tubing cutter works well further up the case where it is simply thin wall brass tubing

I used a hacksaw, spent primers alone look pretty slick too. Good job!!

I used my arrow cutter on mine with a wood dowel in it. As for the burn marks when cutting... it leaves character. You drill holes slightly bigger than your jigsaw blade and cut with that instead of the grinder wheel. Also been thinking on the design for drilling small hole designs for the sound holes. If I come up with a favorite I'll draw it up an you can decide how far apart you'd drill on the can. If I come up with more than a few ideas folks can choose from it may make you a few more bucks. I'll keep you posted brother.

I used a Dremel with a cutting wheel on mine

Cutting the shell casings is deceptively more difficult because the metal gets thicker at the base. For myself, I'm fortunate in that I have a Gunsmith Lathe that ought to do the job right quick and neat, but not everybody has one of them laying around. Alternatively, if you have a steady hand, you might try chucking the shell in a hand drill, and use a dremel with a thin diamond cutoff wheel, (thinner cutoff wheel, less metal to remove, should be quicker and neater cut). Another method might be to drill a hole just big enough for the shell to fit into securely, back it up with a solid piece of wood the same size, clamp it together in a bench vise, and use a nice SHARP hacksaw, if you don't mind working up a bit of sweat.

Put some tape on the bottom of your jigsaw to keep it from scratching.

The wave has 4 equal parts broken by 3 nodes (harmonic = no vert movement) So yeah 23 in / 4 = 5.75. Interesting to put it under the node. I guess thats just one note tho so no biggie. Otherwise i wonder if we want the biggest vert vibration place.

Del, when I use cartridge cases in the past (center-fire, like 9mm) I use a Dremel with a cutoff wheel. I bored a hole in a piece of wood close to the case diameter, then cut through the middle of the hole and used those two pieces of wood to clamp each case in the vise while I cut it. I think a hacksaw would work fine too using those same blocks to clamp it. .22 rimfire cases are much easier to cut, as they don't have that thick brass near the base.

Yeah, ideally you'd want to be between nodes, but given that the nodes are moving around as you fret different notes it doesn't seem like you can optimize it.
