3:08 - I lay out my gameplan for the coming year
5:06 - 1st part of the equation: How I plan on improving my "environment" (consistent sleep, designated spaces, training focus)
10:30 - 2nd part of the equation: How I plan on improving my "mindset/internal dialogue"
13:10 - A couple of book recommendations that pair nicely with this video

Everything we want is already within us, it just takes being in alignment/agreement with it to be present in our experience, & that doesn’t need to take ages at all! But there’s more “meals” in this life, picnics that will mean more to you than any feast, a snack on a train and for some reason youll remember the taste of the chocolate and the view of the mountains, there’s small meals with friends that last in your memories...Just because you “think” you’ve had the best..doesn’t mean you’re not hungry and can enjoy another meal..it just might BE the the next BEST! 🤩

I went through this process about a year ago. I suddenly realized I needed a "break" from the stupid pressure I put on myself. I can't describe exactly what I went through, but it was conscious efforts of listening to my body and trying to lower my stress. I started to understand and actually experience self love. Before I would take care of my body and mind with the mindset of being "successful"... I mean, in order to be successful I "have to do" certain things. I worked out, ate healthy and studied... all for the wrong reasons.
Sooo... Now I am as happy as I have ever been, I quit the gym for a while since I realized I was not enjoying it at all, I picked up gardening as a hobby and that changed everything for me. Since I live alone I did this just for myself, I enjoy seeing my plants grow, I like to sit by them and that is so simple. I feel that watering my plants in the evening is the single most "intimate" thing I do by myself (idk how to express this feeling very well).
It is very hard to acknowledge that the self impossed system may not be working, I'm glad that I'm seeing more people questioning this side of the whole "goal oriented" mindset.

      Things you can do:
      1. Move out from your parents house. You love your parents but they fuck you up by restricting your potential. You need to go out and explore your potential. Seek and find whats best for you.
      2. Criticise and articulate more. Tell the blunt truth. Learn to not agree with everything. If you’re not satisfied, tell. Protect yourself from being manipulated by having a say.
      3. Try new things, make mistakes, own up to your mistakes and learn from it. Repeat.
Let go of your perfectionist. It ruins you. It make you not willing to take bigger risk which make you fail very big. Take very big leap then fall. Survive the fall and learn from the lesson. Life is an lesson. It is not taught in school.

Same here... I used to set 15 different goals only to achieve 2 of them halfway, being way too ambitious and unrealistic, putting too much pressure on myself.
This year I'll only set one goal but that one, if achieved, would change the biggest impact on my life in all different areas. Also making a video about it...

I feel you, really. It is actually odd how we try to run somewhere all the time even knowing that it's better just to stop and reflect on things and enjoy the process. But honestly it's mostly depends on a community you are in. If everyone around you runs somewhere it's really hard not to run as well. For UA-camrs that's also horrible since if you don't post videos you're out. If don't make a lot of videos you're out. Thank you for your videos, really. Every single time I am stuck, confused, not clear I run into your videos and then I come back to clarity and a much calmer condition. Thanks again.

Sometimes when I see your videos, it feels like we're living the same life😂... There's a stark difference in environment and resources, and efficiency (I'm messier 😅, and less dedicated) but... Let's just say your pyramid (Mindset, Habits, Environment, Goals) is pretty much a summary of what I've been juggling for nearly two years now. Mid 2018 I set out to "organise my life", I jumbled between setting goals, downloading tons of helpful apps, setting strict routines and all sorts to follow. It was hectic and I failed a lot. Then, I moved on to modify my environment (my bedroom... I live with my parents, my phone, and pc)... I cleared out all the old junk from my room, rearranged furniture, scanned through my pc and phone, deleted all the duplicate files and old junk, rearranged my work into coherent folders, went through my social media accounts, went through all my old emails, yes all!! Deleted a lot, unsubscribed from a lot... Finally, January 2019, I was all set! I thought I was... Spent the early months of 2019 struggling with bad habits and forcing my goals on them. I felt like a high-end computer with tons of malware on it. Things didn't go so well. I took a break and abandoned a lot of goals I had set, a lot of routines and all, since doing them and failing to meet up only made me depressed and even worse off than I was before. Took some time to trash out my bad habits, and it's still a work in progress. At this point, I've been able to eliminate/almost entirely eliminate my anxiety issues, I've become more flexible and less OCD with things, my average mood has improved so drastically, and I've been able to achieve goals in bits. It's a work in progress and I don't even know if there's a finish line to this journey of self-optimisation, but there's growth, and that's what matters😊
You're doing great Nathaniel, thanks for growing and sharing your process with us.

*Listen to your body.* This is so important! I wish I had known this ten years ago when I started college. I pushed myself too hard and didn't listen to my own needs. I thought that when my body was asking me to stop that meant I was lazy and looking for excuses, so I kept pushing. I now have a myriad of health problems that I have developed from years of depriving myself of sleep, skipping meals for the sake of getting more done, not prioritizing exercise, and undergoing extremely high levels of stress that don't go away for months to years. It was so hard on my body and I regret all of it. If you are reading this and you also do these things, take care of your body first and foremost! It is the only one you have and if you are healthy then you will be more productive in the long-run.

@@bitethatbullet7054 In my opinion, the problem with NYR's is that people think that just because it's a new year, they'll suddenly become more productive or disciplined and they don't take the time to actually focus on the planning of the goal. They just wait for the clock to strike midnight and hope for the best. But again, just my opinion. :)

Focus is my #1 goal of 2020, but now my PhD and creativity are suffering. When I am on a roll, I am able to create, to imagine so much, I world build. "Applying too much pressure is the same as having no pressure at all" - Nothing has resonated with me more in my life.
I find most of the time the pressure for me comes from the quality of what I'm doing, how well am I doing it or am I doing it "right." But I've been trying to keep in mind the idea that, "Anything worth doing is worth doing poorly."
I find the other kind of pressure cones from time. Like everything is now or never or needing to grind to get somewhere someday.
Dont really have a fix for these but thats how I feel I put pressure on myself

    I get you 100%
Lately I’ve been applying way to much pressure to myself, to where everything that I want to accomplish is only in my head because I can’t even get the motivation to get up and do it.
My space became cluttered, unnecessary stress was built and I realized how ‘stuck’ I was.
Today I finally got up, started cleaning and getting ready to take a bunch of things to be donated. Cleared all of my social media. Unfollowed a bunch of people and content that don’t inspire me or add any value to my life.
I’ve also decided to write down small attainable daily/weekly goals. That way I can feel better when checking them off. Rather than unrealistic goals that’ll make me feel like a failure.
With that said, I am definitely going to be reinventing myself this year.

Wow. You nailed so many things here. So here's a voice from another generation. I'm old enough to be your grandfather, and I find your observations on self-pressure and the other things you speak of to be relevant and recognizable in my life. I had a 2019 that was partly exhilarating because of the rush of work and opportunity, but partly exhausting for the reasons you list. I look forward to a 2020 that is a different blend of accomplishment and lack-of-accomplishment in the interest of things like the H-word you mentioned: Hobbies. Things that are not always a side hustle. Yes, I'll be working and advancing my UA-cam Channel and writing. And yes, I'll be playing and not advancing a darn thing commercially some of the time. So best of luck to you in 2020. (And, by the way, I like your video production style.)

What an honest video, Nathaniel! Thank you for sharing. As a UA-camr I can definitely relate. I deal a lot with other people with the videos I produce so I used to be under stress constantly when planning a video, hoping nothing would go wrong/no one would cancel. I used to feel a huge pressure to never miss a week of posting, to make videos that were not only tough to pull off but also unnecessary just to prove something to myself. I began letting go more and putting less pressure on myself; even taking half a day off to do something different without checking my phone constantly can make a difference. Me putting pressure on myself wasn't helping anyone. Balance is crucial so good luck on finding yours! Your subscribers would completely understand if you took more time for yourself.

You begin with saying that our generation puts too much pressure on "being productive all the time", but your (great) advice eventually still aims at "how to be more productive".
Let's put our phones away to enjoy that book, roadtrip or tv show fully, not just to be more efficient in at work !
Productivity feels like a goal because it makes our brains happy, but finishing that book, cooking that recipe or building an ikea bedside table also makes your brain feel like you produced something and make it happy
