  • A lot of this still holds true in 2024, almost 10 years after I made this video. That is good, but also bad.
    Sound check, test, my opinion, comparison, and critical thoughts before deciding.
    For those who wonder - so what's actually included with the Twin as far as plug-ins goes?
    It still just includes the "Realtime Analog Classics Bundle" - and what that is can be found here: www.uaudio.com/...

    I'd saved a short collection of interesting videos to watch at random, specifically while tripping on psychedelics. This video will be added to that playlist.

    I think people are missing the point entirely on this product and I think it's a generational thing. The preamps in this unit are unison... which mean the plugins (I think 5 of them) behave like the hardware. This eliminates the need to buy super expensive outboard gear. Sorry, but for hip hop vocals, I may go from u87 or the 103 to neve pre amp then choose between la-2a or 1176.... this is a classic signal chain. While the unit does not come with a neve, you still get la-610b. I use it like I would use an along board to track and use daw to simply print. So when I register my unit I received a huge discount on my first purchase, which helped. With UAD, Waves, slate digital, fab and a few others; one should be able to do wonders. I am grateful uad came into the digital world, now everything feels right! Console 2.0 is like my love sound board and unison and inserts in console are like my outboard racks.... thanks UA....

      Christopher Simmons not sure whether to buy or not after watching it! Love the features, not too happy about the "payment plan" and update cycle of the hardware he mentioned - but that's a positive at the same time - so I might go in for the grab! The guitar amps alone, holy cow!!!!!!!!!!!

      whichoneisbetter well... you get a bunch of things for "free" with the hardware, and then the plugins are well priced if you need them, and then they have promos, like get any 5 for $399, plus a $50 owner coupon; so twice a year you can get the one thing you really want, along with some other stuff to play with, and well priced vs paying $99 for a third party plugin alone. And the versions of stuff like the EMT, reel to reel tape, Lexicon, channel strip, Moog filter, etc. are amazing. Using UAD2 since it came out, have both PCI-quad and Apollo/FW800. Amazing. Love the gain, was able to sell some outboard gear and plugin my vintage synths direct ... zero buyers remorse. I've turned several people onto UAD2 after leaving waves. So it's tied to hardware, BFD. That means you have the benefits of outboard CPU power and lower latency and don't need to freak out every time an OS update. Universal Audio has also been around longer than any PC company if you want to go into staying power.

    Really love this interface! I've had mine for more than a year now and it has been rock solid and perfect. I've come from a couple of Apogee interfaces from a year and half ago (Quartet - random background noise and Duet - unit went microphonic) that both went south on my within six months of ownership. What does Apogee include with your interface for plugins? Yup...that is what I thought. This unit gives me some nice options that allow it to take some of the CPU load off of the computer and thus freeing up for me to use a few more plugin as needed on tracks. In the end, I think the price they are charging for plugins is a bit high but there is a lot of quality there. One must take into account the time it takes them to create these. Still, I usually just wait for a sale. My DAW has almost everything I need in there and what I have done is learned to use what I have fully before buying anything. My only concern is if thunderbolt will still be around in a couple of years now with them using USB-C in the new macbook.

      massivebeatzz I'm still using a motu 828 I purchased back in 2008 so I'm sure there's a noticeable difference compared to this but either way i ordered my Apollo twin can't wait to get it

  • @JohnJonesRocketCity
    @JohnJonesRocketCity 10 років тому +1

    I originally ordered an Apollo Twin Solo but saw some videos and immediately canceled my order before it left the warehouse so I could get the duo. One instance of the 610-B uses up like 37% of DSP on the Solo!
    Folks if ur going to be mixing please do yourself a favor and get the duo unless you enjoy printing or you only plan to track and no mixing. But then again the 610-B is very hungry and so is the rest of the new generation of plugins from UAD. The classic plugins are less hungry though. Either way you can still get by. At the end of the day it is still a ground breaking piece of gear no matter which one you buy.

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому +1

      thanks for the feedback John (&watching). Yes my findings match that as well. Quality reverbs, 610's etc are CPU hungry - so one shouldn't expect too much when tracking with the SOLO. That said, it' s possible to run a 610, a reverb and / or a guitar amp for tracking - so that's mainly my main need - track without latency - then for all the mixing I use professional plug-ins Waves, Native Instruments etc. Most quad core macs pack about 50 times the CPU power of an Apollo, so I can run multiple instances of pretty much the same stuff there - more than I could possibly use. For those who want to go all out on the Apollo stuff though, maybe even a 4 Core rackmount version would be best. And lots of money for all the plugins plus the upgraded hardware. It's something to consider before entering that eco-system.As for Solo vs Duo units: The big deal is really getting a good tone when tracking and a great mix for monitoring - it makes the workflow seemless! The Apollo does just that!

      massivebeatzz that is so awesome thanks for the feedback! sounds like you got a real good hybrid system going over there! i have waves plugs too but my update plan is expired and i cant update to the new 64 bit aax without dropping at least $350. about how many plugins can you run at once without straining it. EQs, Comps, etc. mine actually comes in tomorrow and i'm a bit excited lol

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому

      great question Official!... I tried a few to see how much CPU power each eats up: with 0 plugins I measure DSP1 (9.8%), DSP (4.5%) or 8 and 6%, depending on when I look. Some plug-ins eat about 25% of one DSP, such as Lexicon 224, some 10 to 15%, such as the 610B preamp or the Ampeg ATR-102 tape machine. EQ's such as the Helios 69 or the MIllenia NSEQ-2, each hit one of the DPS's with 10%. Apollo usually balances this out so teh DPS's fill up somewhat equally. One of the Softtube guitar amps weighs in at 20%. So doing the math (and it worked out surprisingly like that in real world) - two guitar amps, a reverb, a 610B preamp and perhaps an EQ would max out the SOLO version. The DUO can handle twice as much, so think you can add 4 EQ's, a tape machine, and maybe a couple of delay units. That's quite a lot - but don't expect it to be like 80 plugins like a MacBook Pro. It' s more about getting a quick, latency free result out of the box. I hope this helps, and great to hear you are excited. You should be!

    • @OfficialSwishaTV
      @OfficialSwishaTV 10 років тому

      massivebeatzz yeah i think im gonna be printing a lot. I also have a lot of native plugins but dont think i'll use them as much. I have an avalon 737 and will be getting a distressor(to run drums through) to use with the Twin Duo. I will just be using EQ, Delay, and extra Comp to tighten stuff up. I think a video of a session with the max amount of plugins(w/o reverb and amps) would be good. A lot of people want to see something like that.

    It's not true that you only have two channels of digital input. It supports 8 channels via ADAT. So a total of 10 channels is possible to get at once.
    It does not however have any digital outputs.
    Excellent review otherwise! Thanks!

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому +2

      thank you - you're absolutely right! Specs DO say 8x Adat in is possible. Since my digital connection was optical, but stereo - I jumped to an early conclusion as 8x ins weren't visible in the Mixer GUI (makes sense). Thanks, I will correct this.

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  3 роки тому

      oh, not sure if I mentioned that - thanks for reminding. So what Kzon refers to is you can add another 8 of inputs via (Adat - and optical cable) or another set of stereo via regular SPDIF digital. SO if you need more inputs, no need to buy an ever bigger Apollo just get something as basic as teh Focusrite Scarlett OctoPre 8-channel Microphone Preamp and you instantly get 8 more mic pre-amps.

    Thanks for the great review!.. I have a motu ultralite as well. Im wondering (specifically to your set up) how you use these together? Do you use both interfaces at the same time for recording and mixing, or do you use them in separate instances? Im wondering if there is some way to harness the power of both together? The motu is either usb or firewire , while the apollo is thunderbolt. Is there some way or configuration to utilize both? I figure that as you have both and have had them for sometime time you could get creative with them. Thanks.

    Great video and walkthrough!
    I went out and got The Apollo Twin Solo shortly after watching it. In hindsight I kinda wished I'd gotten the Duo since it avoids potential headaches on which tracks to mix down first in order to free up DSP for other tracks - but on the other hand it forces you to be more steadfast about your mixing decisions, which can be a good thing I suppose.
    By the way: which software do you use for screen capture and voice overdub?
    Cheers from Denmark

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому

      glad you enjoyed it and it helped!... You should be ok. All mixing can be done in the computer anyways - you can pull a lot more plug-ins than any Apollo interface, as long as it's a fairly recent Mac. The Apollo is great for real time, latency free plug-ins during recording for monitoring.

    How would you compare this to the Waves Mercury Bundle? I wish Waves had a controller like this!

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  9 років тому

      Chase McWilliams great question. Chase! Waves is excellent, UA is excellent. One would have to take several instruments and run them through the original hardware box, then through Waves, then through UA to compare. API EQ for example!.... In either case you'll run out of effects with UA soon, because 1, 2 or even 4 DSPS) are far less than what a modern quadcore Intel computer can, and needs to crunch for a mix. I'd say UA for tracking, and perhaps to assist with reverbs or buss effects - but Waves for the actual mix. The amount of Waves effects is insane - some of them are quite old - but there are so many good ones in there! That's what they do. UA started as a hardware company and then started doing software to stay in the market. I would not say that gives WAVES automatically the edge - but just know that that's what WAVES does - they focus 100% on software plug-ins and hw emulations. They better be good at it! My reality is a combination of everything. I probably could live without an Apollo Twin, but without Waves at all might be difficult. I don't think it's a choice you'd really have to make technologically as they play well together. Just my opinion!

    • @_JohnnySav

      +massivebeatzz thanks for that answer it would be so cool if Waves made an interface like the UA Apollo Twin! UA can have my money this product eliminates the need for an analog board many people are mixing in the box these days. I'd love to use an SSL Console though.

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  8 років тому +1

      +AK-Filmproduktion & Sounddesign hi, the plugins work within Maschine just fine, as long as you have Apollo Hardware running. Youc an also address all the ins & outs during recording, so a pretty powerful situation! However, I don't think there's a need for them - NI Maschine's plug-ins are stellar - so don't feel you have to hold back without Apollo, if you have Maschine.

    • @AlexanderKlose
      @AlexanderKlose 8 років тому

      +massivebeatzz thanks for the quick answer. Yes the Maschine Plugins like transient master, Saturation or Supercharger and all the other ones do an awesome job and they are very good tools to make it sound great.
      I think Its definitely more about how you use plugins and not which brand they are. However UAD also offers the Unison technology which I'm very interrested in. All of my decisions in terms of buying an interface were mostly how many inputs and outputs do I get for my money. But honestly I never used the 16 Ins and outs of my old Emu 1616m nor I use the 6 ins and outs of my focusrite 6i6. So better have 2 awesome sounding inputs with the possibility to record with great analogue emulation than having more inputs with good sounding pres which I never really use.
      And even with the Apollo Twin you can expand via toslink to up to 8 Inputs which don't have unison but can be recorded.
      Thanks for the video. I preordered the USB version of the Apollo and give it a try.

  • @Ukelicks

    Sweet! Yea just got one but you said it could add only 2, is that different then the 8? Not sure how that works. I have an 003 and think it has an optical out, that would give me 4 more preamps on that, then 4 line inputs i could run other preamps through.

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому

      laphtoabeat if it is ADAT you have 8, if you go TOSLINK (Dual channel optical then it is 1 x Stereo). The cables look the same , it depends what device is sending the audio.

    *Dummy here* So UAD is making it sound like I HAVE to use their plugins? I work on Pro Tools with SSL Plugins, is the Apollo Twin compatible with them on Pro Tools? It's simply an interface/pre-amp? As long as my hardware allows I should be able to run anything through it right?

  • @TracQaeda
    @TracQaeda 10 років тому

    Ha it was the first thing I noticed besides the Maschine and Apollo...one quick question...if you are using the Belkin which has 2 TB ports, 1TB port is for the Apollo and 1 is from the Belkin to your Mac? So how is your external monitor connected? My situation is, non retina Mac with 1 thunderbolt port, Apollo Twin duo and external monitor with HDMI to thunderbolt connection. Get what I'm saying?

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому

      sorry I didn't see this question til now. well, typically you would run the Apollo into Belkin and Belkin into the mac. The display would be from HDMI out to the monitor. A non retina mac, however, only has one TB port (acting as Mini Display port as far as your monitor is concerned). Therefore, you would have to choose Apollo OR External monitor and could not have 2 at the same time with Belkin. The Belkin does have a Firewire connection, so you could run the bigger Apollos, such as the Quad or regular model - which are Firewire standards. I believe that Apollo TWIN not having 2 x TB connections to allow for daisy chaining (or another connection such as USB/FW on top) is a big oversight at that price point! That's saving money at the WRONG places! And so is Belkin's (and Caldigit's) docks: why only one TB port? That makes it a dead end for many users - not a perfect solution. I think i need to design a musician friendly dock and put it into production. Who's on board, lol?

    Hello, I am buying a Twin Apoolo, and as the interface uses the output Thunder Bolt, I wonder if I can connect my Mac to the HDMI TV by USB as the output which I used for this purpose strat being used by UAD.
    Another question is I'm thinking about getting the Solo would be an unfeasible choice?

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому

      hi Luiz, yes that could be done. If your Mac is 2012 it has USB 3.0 , and you won't slow down your USB controller for other tasks (HD's, mice etc). A more elegant solution I would suggest is to take a look at the Caldigit Thunderbolt Station. It's a Dock, and adds a HDMI out port, three powered USB 3.0 ports, audio in
      and out jacks, and a Gigabit Ethernet port to your
      computer using a single Thunderbolt cable. It has 2 TB connections, so one can connect to the computer, the other can continue on (chain) to Apollo.It also reduces your cable connections and makes your MacBook Pro and especially any RETINA Macbook Pro easy accessible.As for the other question - not at all ! If you do not need a whole lot of effects going on DURING tracking, there's no need for the TWIN - especially if you have a powerful computer when it comes to mixing, and are not SET on running UA branded plugins (they're great, and would not run without hardware). Any modern Quad Core Mac or PC can run multiple times the amount of plug-ins any Apollo TWIN or even QUAD can several times over, so just having the SOLO would not hurt you. It's limited - but workable.

  • @MadayMaday
    @MadayMaday 10 років тому

    They generally have great sales and their bundles are great. For the price you need to understand what goes into making these plugins. They are essentially replicating the characteristics of most of the actual signal paths of the original hardware. Yes, the plugins are pricey, but compared to getting the actual hardware it is just a small pittance.
    I've an Apollo, and I've put plugs on each channel w/o using sends on a 8 track project and didn't even put a dent in the DSP processing. Now mind you I've got 4 cores doing the processing.
    Another thing you didn't touch on, if you are traveling and don't feel like taking it with you, you can still use the plugins native. Their processing is going to occur on your CPU as opposed to your Apollo.

      hey thanks for commenting and watching!. Indeed a lot goes into these plug-ins, but they actually cost a lot more than the hardware if you geek out on a lot of bundles. Also they DO NOT work as stand alone plugs with no Apollo connected. All the processing is done in hardware and they don't switch over. That's a limitation in my book. But when you travel, the opposite is true - you can use the Apollo stand alone without computer as a mixer. SOUND ON SOUND magazine says the following about that: " Subsequently, if the Apollo is powered up but not
      connected to a Mac, the same routing and mixing stays in place and the
      unit can be used as a stand-alone mixer. "

      my calculator is fine, and I engineered on many hardware units myself to know the difference. the point made here is more specific: that you can get good hardware tools , a small collection thereof mind you, either used or from a different manufacturer (so not the UA hardware counterpart) that won't break the bank either. 200, 300 and 400 for a plug-in is unreasonable compared to what you can get on ebay these days in hardware. it'll still cost you more, of course - but with premium prices for plug-ins and falling prices on hardware - any hardware - that difference is shrinking rapidly.

    • @inforobob
      @inforobob 10 років тому

      Again, it's a premium new unit from a trusted vendor that gives above average after sale support.. It runs highly rated plugins. Look at the prices of the repacked Apogee's selling now under the Avid name. Even more money.
      You know the old adage, You get what you pay for. There are Chevrolets that I like but they certainly are not built like a Mercedes.
      BTW, I work for nobody but myself. I am a self employed IT Consultant who sometimes shoots and edits video.

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  3 роки тому

      ok so with this Twin (and any other Twins except for the Twin X) - you have 2 simultaneous channels, 1 & 2 (which can be guitar inputs, lines, or mic). 2 is the max PLUS ...and here it comes...Digital inputs..Example a Stereo signal from any digital player, mic preamp etc. or better - ADAT, which gives you another 8 inputs. ..Your 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th etc device would need to be connected to that external device. Example would be an 8x preamp with 8 microphones connected with digital out, going straight into Apollo. But it could also be say a Line 6 guitar FX board , that has a digital stereo output going into the Apollo. In short you only have 2 AD converters built in.

    Lol, Cue Mix is a pain in the ass. I use every plug in and have been using plugs and DAW for over 20 years (excluding UA).... I am not a computer genius or anything but I can figure things out pretty quick.....however Cue Mix even after years of use is still complicated after an update changes the configuration (or a slight volume change causes it to jump to max volume and blow you out of your seat!)....It's not a well designed program...but it does the trick for just recording dry with zero latency, then I add FX later....I have always been interested in UA quality they look and sound great.

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  10 років тому

      B Dub well, I wouldn't put it that way - but yes - counterintuitive is definitely what comes to mind! Me too, I always have to think before doing anything, trying to remind myself. I'm definitely with you on that!.... I'mgoing to be specific with my feedback in case MOTU is listening. It does the trick, indeed - and there are not too many options out there with good DSP implementation. One of the lueMix imitations is EQ, compression and reverb "ONLY" - despite being good ones. That's great for tracking, but where UA shines is , is the ability to add guitar amp emulations, delays, modulations etc...in other words "creative" effects that may be needed to track something properly or to write a song, not just to "feed reverb" to a demanding vocalist - as they call it. And Cue Mix has not evolved or improved in that regard. DSP power is cheap, they just need to do it right! Not asking for fancy emulations or a plug-in platform, but something to work with, and replace later with a better sound, as long as I can track dry! A guitar and bass amp is a must!Also CueMIx, at least on my Ultralite MKIII Hybrid running the latest MacBook Pro and Mac OS crashes or freezes often. Lots of opportunity to improve!

Your computer can definitely handle hundreds of plug-ins, your Apollo cannot (5 to 10). So unless you use them on subgroups, something specific or only a couple of tracks, it' s not going to power your entire session. I don't think that's the purpose of it!. For that I would look at the Quad, and beyond! Recording with the Apollo for real time effect goodness to all involved parties - yes! Then let the might of your computer and DAW do the production!

      well, cpu performance has been increasing insanely! they are keeping the speeds steady, but the instructions these CPU's can handle without heat is monster! Skylake and beyond will make even basic laptops far more powerful than the most expensive Apollo. Even a 3 year old MacBook Pro, can run up to 100 plugins, Apollo Twin about 6 or 7. But what you benefit most from is having these effects in the monitoring chain and during the recording process. Also they are guaranteed to be latency free, and hassle free. It's an audio interface with clean converters, so that's where your money is best spent, just for that.

      I know there is R & D prices associated...but plz...I've seen companies working harder and have better prices.
      I'm aware you can run a lot of stuff in your DAW. I have and overclocked 3770k running at 4.6ghz and run heavy orchestral setups. But I'm a bit worried CPUs aren't getting anywhere fast nowadays.
      Friends of mine upgraded from let's say a 4770k to a 5820k and they found their performance was actually worse.

      The UAD plugins can only be used with the DSP hardware as far as I know and they are a lot closer to the real thing than any other company. You can buy all 83 plugins for a little less than half the price of a shadow hills and get almost identical performance to the real hardware units. The dsp box/interface, as far as I know, only lets you offload UAD plugins onto it which wouldn't help cpu performance if you're using Waves, Izotope or anything else really. You're right that cpu power isn't going anywhere. From Sandy to Broadwell-E, there's only been about an eight percent increase in IPC and Intel's really just sitting on their next three architecture's as long as AMD isn't releasing Zen. I'd honestly wouldn't worry about upgrading your cpu until Tigerlake unless you over-volt it from overclocking. What massivebeats isn't taking into consideration with how many plugins each system can handle is that all UAD plugins are DSP based, which eat up cpu power FAST. Yeah, a macbook can run 100 instances of eq or amp sims, but try putting 100 Butch Vig vocal plugins or some of the stuff by Izotope or Kush Audio, and you'll be lucky to effortlessly use 20. If you're considering buying hardware compressors/eq's and don't make 6 figures+, I'd say the UAD stuff is a good option, but if you're just sticking to recording your own stuff or tracking local artists every once in a while, Waves Gold and the Slate everything bundle would work fine and gold is only 400 sometimes when it's on sale, Slate is 20 a month I think.

      Your comment's a little confusing, but I think I know what you're asking. Yes, you can run those plugins if you use the UAD interface. The only thing you can't do is off load their power consumption onto the apollo like you can with the UAD plugins. If you only record vocals, then I don't think you should spend money on UAD plugins. Just get an actual 1176 or like a shadow hills opto. It'd be about the same price as the apollo and a couple UAD plugins. Whether or not Slate, Waves, and/or Ozone plugins are better than UAD's are completely subjective, but in my opinion, Ozone is best for mastering, Waves are best for mixing on the cheap if you don't have powerful cpu, Slate's best for mixing on the cheap when you do have a powerful cpu, and UAD is the best for mixing and mastering, but BY FAR the most expensive

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  9 років тому +1

      EvilMambo it can use it like any other audio interface. so VST, AU, AAX, RTAS are being calculated by your CPU and then sent out to the audio interface from the DAW. So yes the Apollo will work! But the Apollo only uses UA plug-ins with it' s own Cores. So let's say you use an Amplitube amp effect and a UA reverb, then your computer's CPU will calculate the Amplitube, and Apollo will calculate the UA reverb. There won't be any delays or issues with that! All that works flawlessly! So you can actually help your computer CPU by running some UA plug-ins from the hardware! When I say Aomplitube - just to follow your example - it could be any other audio plug-in you have on your system. Another reverb, EQ, native instruments Maschine etc. All of that is taken care of by the computer CPU. Hope this helps.

    can someone please give me some advice on this
    i have 3 hardware synths, 1 hardware drum machine, and 1 mic. i want to record these on the fly in audio tracks in my DAW.
    ive been looking into the Apollo twin duo and i have pretty much got my mind made up and i want to buy one. do i need to connect these synths to a mixer then to the Apollo twin duo?
    what would be my best options?
    thank you

      @massivebeatzz  8 років тому

      Sorry for the long wait! No this is not ideal for you. Why? Not enough inputs. I would look for an audio interface that has at least 8 inputs. look at Focusrite Saphhire, Scarlet Red, Mackie etc. There are many many good ones out there!

    • @KUPHSER
      @KUPHSER 8 років тому

      Thanks for the reply. wouldnt the mixer running into the duo make up for the extra inputs? Also i would use an analogue mixer so that the signal comes through to the apollo with no latency. Would this work?

  • @Hexspa

    Hey man. How does that Twin compare to the Ultralite mk3? I got that UL and have been literally dreaming about a Twin. Is it worth the upgrade? Sell the UL? Also do you recommend a SOLO or DUO Twin? Thanks.

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  9 років тому +1

      Hexspa great question, and I had the UL mk3 Hybrid before that! You get MORE with the Ultralite by MOTU: more ins/outs, DSP with no plugin cost to shell out, built in tuner, a multi-functioning display, firewire AND usb, mac and pc support. Not bad huh? At least on paper! The Apollo has the advantage (and disadvantage) that it relies on a home made plug-in system (UAD). The truth though is - these are excellent plug-ins = more flexibility! It's more than just an interface. It can be true Audio FX support for your computer! As long as you're willing to spend the money! The plug-ins, again, are top notch, and the mixer is far better than the geeky UL (and MOTU in general, dated mixer , which made me reconsult the manual often, and I never consult the manual).Apollo is a pleasure to work with , it's a desktop unit, and therefore very accessible - but make no mistake. There are limitations. Just a few ins/outs (analog at least), and even the DUO'S processing power runs out quickly. But it's not geared to take care of your mixes, but more of your monitoring situation, or printing during recordings. All that' s in realtime! So if you only need 2-3 effects per recording, the SOLO might work, if you need more, go for the DUO. UL has compressor, EQ and reverb integrated (no plug-in hassle, free, comes from the box), but then again, they are not very fun and it's dated!! No delays, no chorus, no distortion, no modulation...MOST of ALL, you can use the Apollo to get a GREAT guitar or bass sound when recording! Realtime plugins with minimal minimal latency! How cool is that? Beware though, the really good amps cost money...$149, $199 etc.Here's a thought -To keep things contained, I could see myself just use the SOLO, with the included small plug-in bundle (Analog Classics). All other 867 effects (lol) for mixing can easily be done on a current mac or pc, as long as you have that... Keep the cost at exactly what the SOLO costs! I think that's the idea of a little pristine, high quality portable unit.But everybody's workflow is different, so take my last comment with a grain of salt!

      Hi there! Thanks for the video! I have an ultralite mkiii too and was considering an Apollo, I was wondering if there would be any noticeable difference regarding the converters. How do the pres/converters of both units compare? Have you run any tests? As you say, the cuemix software is terribly counterintuitive, but besides that, i find the motu quite a versatile interface. Plugins aside, would you say the Apollo is a good investment just for the converters?

      absolutely Joe. They run as plugins, with the difference that the processing power comes from the Apollo. Let's say you have a channel with 2 Logic Pug-Ins, 1 Waves Plugin, 2 UA Plugins. The computer would calculate the Logic and Waves Plugins, and Apollo's DSP (or DSPs) would take care of the UA ones. Note that they only work if you have the hardware connected! thanks 4 watching!

    it looks like the plug-ins first shown are at least $2,000 over the price of the hardware, closer to $3,000. So to make a recording with add-ons you are in the $4,000 range with a dual preamp? they better do better than that

Also, no digital outputs (bummer!), which is expected at this price level. hope this helps.

    • @massivebeatzz

      +hawg427 hey, so the difference is the processing power, and that' s it Single Core versus 2 (Dual) cores - and that's Apollo Twin Solo vs Apollo Twin Duo. Good question why they called them twins, since they are not twins, lol! • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  8 років тому

      technically the same thing as far as marketing goes. Scientifically not (multiple delay tones make up for an echo effect that happens in nature) - but as far as labeling delay pedals / echo pedals etc , manufacturers often use these terms loosely!

    • @garyhenry3492
      @garyhenry3492 8 років тому

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  9 років тому

      Das Licht well, in that regards, keep in mind - the soft-synths are not coming from UA, but from the DAW's synth plug-ins. I haven't done real world tests, but it was slightly (not by as much as you would expect based on Thunderbolt Technology) better. I got it down to 32 on my retina macbook pro!. Then again, I can do 32 with most audio material anyway on it! The safe choice was 64 though.

    • @KegelLicht
      @KegelLicht 9 років тому

      massivebeatzz I know that regarding synths , but the buffer depends on the quality of the driver. Thank you !

    • @massivebeatzz
      @massivebeatzz  9 років тому

      Das Licht yes - and the driver , sure , but the "quality " of a driver has limits. With everything coded equally well among different manufacturers, the hardware matters eventually - and that determines the buffer size - aka the ability to process the audio in time.Thunderbolt interfaces, across the board do better as you probably know. The TWIN is no exception. I pitted it against a TR-8 working as USB audio interface at 96Khz. Better driver = even better results in Thunderbolt ? #tapintotheforcealready!

      +Wurk the Beatmaker Very wrong. You have no idea the level of resolution the 2i2 lacks, compared with an Apollo. The Scarlett 2i2 has a good pre-amp and maybe... just maybe the WORST driver ever created for a recording situation. The 2i2 doesn't connect with a send audio reliably due to bad drivers-- you will hit certain mixing limits an stuttering will occur. Focusrite has known of their shitty drivers for years. That issue alone is enough to never recommend another 2i2: I used to do it all the time too. Good luck getting all your Slate plugins working correctly with a 2i2.
