I think we will start seeing more and more wine cask versions of single malts as distillers struggle to source (and afford) quality bourbon and sherry casks. In 10 years this will be the norm.
Nice back story that this was picked by your son. I have the tail end of a bottle of this that I've been meaning to review when I have nothing more exciting to talk about... but that's not happened yet :-) I agree with you that Jura can be so much better when better presented. I feel like it would help them enormously if they switched to craft presentation and spent more money on *quality* casks and longer maturations rather than *unusual* cask types and finishes. I hope they realise their potential because it is there.
Haha, you might be waiting a while 😉 I get the impression they are getting cast-off casks from other distilleries and most of it is fairly tired wood. I'd love to see them go down the route of 'warehouse' batches like they've done with Fettercairn. Cheers Whisky Lock 🥃👍
I've had a number of Jura's that make me believe it has great potential, and have themselves been enjoyed. Unfortunately its probably only half of the bottles I've had though! Fingers crossed the distillery gets the Fettercairn treatment at some point soon 😉 Cheers Jonathan 🥃👍
I've also never connected with Jura. Neither the OBs nor the one I tried from Cadenhead's Authentic Collection last year (part of a tasting). For me there's an awkward note on the palate that I don't get along with, and it seems to me that it's the same note across all the bottlings, so I can only relate it to the spirit itself. I do, however, consider buying a small tasting set next month (3x 5cl, the Superstition, the 10 yo Origin and the 16 yo Diurach's Own) when going on vacation. It's really reasonably priced on the flight's air shop at approx. 9€ so not much to lose if I don't get along with them. Cheers Ben, nice review on a less than obvious choice of whisky given how many online reviews, one can find of this Jura presentation.
Ahh shame even the Cadenheads bottle didn't draw you in! I've not had many indie Jura's but the ones I have tried were an improvement. I think I've had that miniatures set before and I'm a little sad to say that I remember enjoying those expressions more than what they're currently putting out! That Diurach's Own was my favourite, though couldn't hold a torch to the other 16 YO's I had available 😉 Cheers again Benny 🥃👍
Great to hear your thoughts on this Ben. I saw this yesterday and was tempted as it was on offer, but I just couldn't do it because I've never got on with any Jura I've had yet. Great review, as always, though. Cheers.
Yeah, money probably better placed elsewhere to be honest! Though I did enjoy it, it doesn't quite stack up against its competition within this price point. Cheers Al 🥃👍
I am a sucker for red wine finishes in peated malts. Jura is still not convincing me. Got 11yo Cadenheads release recently and it feels like the spirit practically has nothing to offer. looks like it is a bit of hit and miss even with indie bottlers. That Jura tin btw sports Springbank 25 colours haha!
I'm the same, love a good Port Charlotte or Caol Ila that's been in red wine. They're in a different league to this 😅 I keep feeling like Jura has potential, if someone actually cared for it... Sad to hear the indies are also hit & miss! Cheers Flying_Hussar 🥃👍
Unfortunately you're not really missing out at the moment! I hope they get the Fettercairn treatment soon and we see some more natural options 🤞 Cheers Carlos 🥃👍
Hi Ben, not ashamed to say that the only Jura I’ve connected with and actually like was the superstition, which is unfortunately discontinued. Like your in depth, honest reviews. Slàinte Ben.

I wouldn't be totally against that to be honest, I enjoy red wine cask matured whisky 😉

Good to hear some positive comments about Jura. Sure, 70% is rather low, but I do not hate Jura and I'm glad you thought this was OK. Cheers!

The only Jura I’ve had is whatever amount makes it into Rock Oyster/Island blend. 😆 I m good with that for now.

Yeah I enjoyed some of their older expressions more than the current bottles. It was the Diurachs' own that was my favourite I think.
Cheers David 🥃👍
Well done your son carrying that big bottle
Wish I had recorded it! Cheers Fraser 🥃👍
Nice video and review Ben
Thanks Whisky Lovers Society! 🥃👍
Jura can be marvellous. It just needs age. It's not a whisky that shines under 15 years.
Great intro 😂
Haha, I thought I was more positive than that but when I watched it back... 😂
