The festival is dedicated to the Sun God, Surya, and is a way of thanking him for a bountiful harvest. Pongal is also the name of a sweet rice dish that is cooked during the festival. The dish is made from freshly harvested rice, milk, and jaggery, and is usually cooked outdoors in clay pots over open fires. The festival is a time of joy and celebration, and families come together to share food, exchange gifts, and offer prayers to the Gods.

අස්වැන්න නෙලීමේ උත්සවය ලෙස අරුත් දෙන තෛපොංගල් උත්සවය ලොව සියලුම හින්දු ජනයා විසින් සඍම වර්ෂයකම තෛ මාසය එනම් දුරුතු මස 15 දින සමරනු ලබති. වසර 2000කට වඩා වැඩි ඉතිහාසයකට දිව යන මෙම ආගමික උත්සවය හිරු දෙවියන් මූලික කර ගනිමින් සිදු කරනු ලබයි.වසරක් පුරාවට තම වෙහෙස මහන්සියෙන් රැස් කර ගත් අස්වැන්න ගෙට ගැනීමෙන් පසු ඒ සදහා උදව් උපකාර කළ සූර්යයා, වර්ෂාව හා ගොවි සතුන්ට ස්තූති කිරීම මෙහි මූලික අරමුණයි.
පොංගල් යනු "උතුරා යාම නැතිනම් පිටාර ගැලීමයි" මැටි කළයකින් කිරි උතුරා පිටාර ගැලීම හින්දු භක්තිකයන් සෞභාග්‍යයේ සංකේතයක් ලෙස සලකන්නා සේම උදා වූ නව වසරේ ලෝවාසී සියළුම ජනතාවගේ සිත් සතුටින් පිරී ඉතිරී සෞභාග්‍යය හා නීරෝගී සම්පත්තිය උදා වේවා..
