Are you concerned at all about lightning and ventilation by running the tin all the way to the ceiling? Seems like the stalls will be dark and stagnant. Did you consider half walls? Better visibility throughout the barn and better air flow. The airflow is really crucial especially for lambing.
When I used to design animal housing, the internal walls in our Under One Roof system would only be 4’ to 5’ tall. This increases lighting and ventilation for each individual pen, and allows the owner to see into all the pens from anywhere inside the barn. Also, where possible, hang gates so they can open in either direction.
@@Gramsloveschickens The outer doors keep the worst of the cold where it belongs - outside!
@@pippaseaspirit4415 Agree it keeps most of the wind out, but cold? - Don't think so, seems they are not using any insulation at all, only steels sheets. That wiil make a very effective freezer in the winter and hot swety sauna in the summer.
Animals put on their winter coat. They just need to get out of the wind & rain.

I have to tell you, I had a little cancer surgery yesterday and I felt so much better watching the two of you today did my heart so much good. There is too much ugly in the world, the good you present is a godsend. Thanks.
I hope that you are doing better, Chuck. I find watching the projects on Lumnah Acres very distracting and relaxing.
Nice to see a family dinner again its been a while. It's amazing how far you have come, when I first subscribed Olivia could barely see over the counter in at the old homestead, you both were still working and Gina was shy on camera and definitely would not have gotten on that lift.
Olivia has grown up a lot since I first subscribed. I agree about how much Gina has taken on. She does stuff now that I would not have expected her to. ❤
Greetings from Northern Michigan. The barn looks great and functional. Please be concerned with ventilation especially during the winter months. The pen bed packs develop ammonia and contributes to an unhealthy environment. If you see an increase in raspatory distress(pneumonia), evaluate the airflow, and amount of moisture in the bed pack. Stay Warm!!
My favorite part of your videos is when you sit down for supper and pray. Wonderful thing to share with the world.
The panel on the gate goes on the inside. Reason why, when the animals push on the gate they push on the frame of the gate. With the panel on the outside they have nothing to push on but the panel. So it breaks a lot more often.
It's good to see Pluto at the end when you're eating.
I haven't seen Pluto in ages.
How old is Pluto now?
Should have looked at COG HILL FARM'S barn and stalls, barn is efficient and airy with great animal runs.
Except for the occasional cold snap, Cog Hill's worst animal threatening weather is the summer heat and humidity. At Lumina its winter weather. There are live stock and live stock purpose differences too.
Al, you just amaze me! You are the hardest working homestead youtuber, constantly building and working on something. I have been watching since the day you got Hope! "I like it, I like it a lot!"
He and Jason from Sow the Land are up for #1 spot on hardest working homesteaders. Al has all the tools while Jason is still at beginning stage with mostly hammer and nails. 😅
I’m so glad you sealed the floor. Makes it easier to get rid of snow and ice and water. It’ll dry a lot faster as well
Butterfly Fork Latch is best, and for added security you can add a pin on a chain to keep pigs from lifting the latch. To open gate, pull the pin, lift the latch. You can get a hinge side spring to help with opening the gate for one hand operation. Gate springs work both ways depending on what side you install them on, one side will close the gate and installed on the other side will open the gate.
You might have to add metal on the inside of the pig gate to keep them from busting the wire. Use the siding with J-trim.

Hello Al and Gina. Your barn is coming along nicely. My favorite part of your videos is when you're at the table together as a family, being thankful.
Only bad thing about the gate that way is if the sows rub on the gate it can break the spot welds. You may hafta afix a couple of 2×6 length ways on the inside to spread out the weight against the wire panel.
That livestock building is looking sweet AL +Gina . Livestock and you both will be spoiled 😂
Boy what a mess that storm made in the barn!! Time to get those barn doors built!! Looking great guys nie work !! Stay blessed all!!
Good morning Lumnah family from a dark and rainy Pacific NW. Good morning viewers! The snow did blow under the door. That's how it happens in my barn too. It depends on how the wind is blowing which door gets snow under it. I bought stuff from Thrive Market a long time ago but it was before it had a membership fee. I don't buy from them anymore. The stall does look really nice. It'll be a bit dark in there. In our barn there is set of lights down the center and then a light in each stall with an outlet in the wall or the ceiling for brooding lights or heated water buckets. Yup, you're hanging your gate the best way. If there are pigs in there remember to have the top one of those with the post downward so they can't just lift the gate right off those hangers. Yay, you knew that! That's how we hung our gate on our pig pen. Nice job! Thanks Gina for showing us how you cooked your chickens tenders. Lard is great for flavor too! Those look amazing. You can filter your lard through coffee filters and reuse it again too! It's such a good deep frying grease. Thanks for this great video Lumnah family!
@@damogranheart5521 Hello Damogran Heart. My year is off to a great start! I can finally bend my left knee all the way up to my waist for the first time in over 9 years as of Wednesday the 17th of January. The Osteopath I'm seeing figured out where my muscle adhesions were so he released them so I could do that! Chiropractors don't address the muscle adhesions that keep the bones in the wrong place. Physical therapists don't do this either. I'm finally getting the help I need. It takes so long to get better. Don't let a teenager drive into you while he's texting! He'll never know what he's put me through! The medical profession won't even recognize that my layers of muscles can got "stapled" together all the way to the bone when I got hit by a hard surface like a car. My husband doesn't understand at all. My doctor just says that I should be grateful that I could find anyone that could help me. I am grateful, it just makes it hard when the medical field tells me there is nothing wrong with me but I can only go up stairs one stair at a time. I get ignored by the medical profession. I am gaslighted by them telling me that nothing is wrong. When I ask them to help me they just tell me they can help me deal with my pain when they don't know why I have any. So frustrating. And they get paid by my health insurance for not helping me. I have to pay out of pocket to get the help I need and the medical profession doesn't recognize Osteopathy as a valid medical treatment. It's only going to get worse with time as they push that only a "pill" can help anyone. It's not true. Soon they'll have everyone brainwashed that alternative medicine is all a hoax. I can move again. How can that be a hoax?
Pesonally I think that I would put silicon along the bottom edge to keep water and other items from getting under the panels and seeping into the wood supports.
Yes! You don’t want water or urine gunk to get under or between those panels. Lexel caulk would make it watertight.
You’ll be able to pressure wash the stalls and clean away the bacteria if it’s sealed.
You may want to build safe corners, for the baby pigs prior to closing things up in that area. Check out (just a few acres farm) videos for the pig area.
The one thing about the gate wire mesh, if you install it with the wire mesh to the outside , your larger animals will have an easier time dislodging it from the gate. If it is installed to the Inside, when the animals push on it , they have to also push it through the tubing, makes it harder to break. Other way around and all they have to do is break the spot welds which isn’t hard.
Totally agree. We had that happen once when we put a gate up in a hurry and weren't paying attention. 10 feeder pigs running loose! :)
You should install your end wall sliding doors to stop wind blowing snow and rain in.
They are waiting for information and parts to come in before they build the doors.
The chicken tenders looked awesome! Awesome 👏 👍
Another reason you can find water inside a covered structure is when the weather is warming, and the surface is colder than the outside air. It will actually condense on the surface that’s covered. I have seen it many times in covered parking garages while a warm front is moving through and the concrete surface is still below the air dew point. It can even freeze if the concrete was below freezing for an extended period.
The barn is looking great! Great team work! I just love when a Lumnah video uploads. Thank you both so much.
Hello Friends, God Bless you! Here in Colo folklore of someone who always wanted a chicken farm, put up huge buildings for hatcheries etc. Had the heartbreak of chickens dying. Upon asking old timers, was advised that 50 years earlier, the same land was used extensively for hog farming. The locals said chickens could not be raised on the land, nor should pigs be in close proximity to chickens. Have you heard any local issues similar to this? Wish you all the best and cheer you on always.
GM AL the gate should have the wire on the inside just like you said the Cows and pigs when they push against the spot welds will be stronger over the years just an idea love the adventure. You are doing a great job keep up the great work and Happy New Year to you and your family God bless you
You’re doing an awesome job. The walls for the pens will be easy to clean , have you plan for a floor channeling water and animal waste ? We have that in my grandma barn and it is easy to clean with the jet wash. Have a great day 😊
I could listen to the rain 🌧 on the tin roof for hours 😌 makes me sleepy.
WOW , it is looking so good !! You Guys are wonderful ! I LOVE YOU GUYS !!!! 🥰🥰🥰
You guys are making great progress on finishing the barn. Just a thought on the gates: if you have the fencing part of the gate on the inside, when the animals lean against the gate, it will not come loose as they push on it hard and break the welds. I really like the music you had on this video. Great work y'all!
Some good advice on your gates Al.
Ps. Noticed Olivia is a south paw. Nice to see her.
Those tin curly-ques would be cool bird deterrents for the hidden garden!
I suspect that no matter how many times we build a house or design any building we're going to wish we had done something different. It's all about trade offs.
Gina.. Love watching you cook in that beautiful kitchen. 😍
Hello Gina and Al , I have a question are you going to put up a webbing or netting on the trusses to keep the birds or bats out of them.
I have been following you guys for years. I'm in a hurry to see the large doors built. Keep up your life style it couldn't be better.
Always put the wire toward the pen. Pigs will rub on it with a lot of weight. Welds are stronger if you are pushing against them rather than pushing them out and away!
Love watching your vids. Gate: welded side to animals, flip the gate around. Me personally I would have only gone up 8' max on the metal interior siding. Reason is, theres going to be a ton of moisture with the animals waste & perspiration (body & breathing). cement wont drain it, Im wondering if using deep bedding will be enuf. With all the trapped moisture & bacteria Im hoping the animals wont get sick. Pole barns (open barns) are great for housing animals.
I am sitting here in Western Australia with a fan blowing directly on me - and you are rugged up to blazes. Warm hugs to you three and all the animals!

Rain with the snow came earlier this year, it usually comes in February making horrible driving conditions....and also farming conditions. All the better reason to get this barn completed. Good morning Lumnah Acres and viewers. Wishing everyone a productive day from snowy East Tennessee. Great video Al and Gina!!

Good Thursday morning Lumnah family and friends, hope everyone is having a wonderful week!😊
I do love the way you are making it easy to clean out but if you close it in to much animals can get sick if there's not enough air flow
You might look at your flow of animals. Is the gate opening in the right direction to facilitate or block the moving in and out of the barn. You might want to change the hinge to the other side.
Please show an update of your pet kittens. I would love to see how much they have grown.
Al, if you want that piece of siding tin to fit that J channel, cut in a furring strip of foam board right behind it. It will totally hide that jagged stuff in the channel.

What kind of doors going on the barn? Slide doors? Can't wait... Love your barn thought maybe the tops of some of the pens could be open you could look from pen to pen and give more light?

Looking foward to seeing the animals in the barn I feel so bad seeing them out in the weather I know they are used to it and built for it I’m soft hearted. Fingers crossed for better weather.
Good morning Lumnah family. You can certainly see which way your prevailing winds are from. The barn is really looking good.
I find it interesting that the cutter makes a spiral on the flat areas and a knot on the ribs. The barn is looking good.
Winter has finally arrived here in PA, too. I’m looking out the window at four inches of snow, and they’re calling for another four in the next 24 hours, and our high temperatures have been in the low 20’sF this week. I’m hibernating!
A bit of advice take a strip of 2 inch wide rubber as wide as your door is and nail it or staple it to front lower edge of door the way we do for our front doors as a sweeper but place on outside to keep rain and debris out best wishes guys
Love your show from Australia

I agree wire on wrong side, Also the pull up latches need more room to mount, plus think about gates opening close to each other if your moving a sow into the next pen and leaving the baby s in the same pen , you don t want to have to walk it down the hall to another pen, Just helpful hints not being rude,

The barn had enough water and ice in it, looked like a typhoon went through...lol 😂😅 The barn is definitely looking good! Love ya'll ❤️
Morning Lumnahs, build is going well. I would like to make a suggestion. You may want to put chicken wire or some other material for the ceiling. This will help to keep birds down.
Al, What Bubba Said, the panel goes on the inside so the pigs won't break the panel loose when they lean on it or push it while rough housing.
Going fast now! Good morning Al,Gina and Olivia. I'm sure that rain came thru the open door and the wind blew it way into the barn.❤
Gina that chicken looked so good if my phone would of let me grab a few pieces you would of been missing some for sure. Im ready for spring but I also dread all the tornadoes we get here in Oklahoma. Bless you all and keep you well and safe.

Keep up the great job, y'all. I could live in that barn. Lol
Wow, I didn't realize you were going to put solid panels from floor to ceiling in the barn. I've never seen that done in a barn before. We've always used half walls. Not sure why. Probably for light and ventilation, though. Now that you've got your first stall walled in, does it feel okay? Looks a little claustrophobic on video.
Good Luck with the Winter weather! I hope everyone and all the animals are safe~
When you mentioned powerwashing, my mind went to the wood on the floor. Will you waterproof the joint between the floor and the walls?
The water has to go somewhere, flat slab, no drain holes and slab is not grooved. Many design boo boos.
You could stretch those metal curly ques out and make Christmas decorations to hand along the roof. Maybe spray paint them silver.
I'm the same as Western Australia, sitting in New South Wales with air conditioner blasting, never seen snow in my life but looks cold
Thank you for sharing. The barn is looking great. I've missed your family prayer and meals together too.
I and my wife are really enjoying watching you build out your farm. You two make a great team! Question: Why are you running the interior walls of the barn to the ceiling. Why not go half the height and use half as much lumber and metal. Sorry, but it driving me crazy....
He has no idea. Building the Ritz B&B for summer letting, tongue in cheek. Many bad design ideas, Al knows best.
Gina, being chef experience when chicken floats in whatever median you fry with, when chicken, fish, even pork chops. Will float to the surface. So To bend that metal in the brake, if you score the metal after you cinch the brake down on it, it'll bend much easier. And depending on the thickness of the metal, you may have to score it 2 or three times. Good luck.
good points, but that brake is not really up to the task of bending thicker metal.
Al, when using the metal shear if it hits the tin hump sometimes it works better to cut from the back
Al have you considered tarping the door ways to the barn.
