Spain marks the 10th anniversary of King Felipe’s coronation on Wednesday (June 19) in Madrid.
On June 2, 2014, Spain's then-King Juan Carlos announced he would abdicate in favor of his son Felipe, aiming to revive the scandal-hit monarchy at a time of economic hardship and growing discontent with the wider political elite.
On June 19, 2014, Spain's new king, Felipe VI, was handed the royal sash by his father, Juan Carlos, who signed his abdication on June 18, ending 39 years of reign.
Felipe married Queen Letizia on May 22, 2004. The couple has two children: Crown Princess Leonor and Princess Sofia.
