So, for the science behind why a full ball bounces and a half-full ball doesn’t: water is incompressible. When you drop the half-full ball, all of the energy of the collision passes through the water, like a shockwave. It hits the air, which is very compressible, and that absorbs the energy and compresses nearly instantly. With the full ball, the energy has nowhere to dissipate (except for its brief moment of contact with the wooden table), and so the energy of the impact returns into the full ball, causing it to move in a different direction, or bounce. The only reason a ball filled with air (the normal ping-pong ball) can bounce is because the rigid plastic shape takes the brunt of the returned energy. That’s why bouncy balls are filled, with a hardened gelatin, to retain most of their energy. The water-filled ball is genuinely closer to a bouncy ball. It’s also the reason that a normal ping-pong ball will dent on a very hard impact, absorbing the energy, and stopping any bounce. Which brings me to my challenge idea (if you guys haven’t done it already, just found this channel): Play with a heavily dented ball, multiple dents. That should mess with bounce angles, and make for very interesting post-bounce mental corrections on its projected trajectory. Edit: I was right, went looking for it, found it from ten months ago. Now I have a playlist to catch up on before my next suggestion. Have a sub :)
Water is incompressible. Everybody seems to repeat that over and over. How can something bounce if its not compressible? I guess all neutron stars are made of water because WATER IS INCOMPRESSIBLE!! It just is.
@@0x04c11db7 Incompressible at a molecular level. The molecules, once bonded, refuse to change size and structure. All molecules bounce around in whatever they make up, just at a slower rate if it’s more dense, like a solid instead of a liquid. If you push on water, it moves away, rather than squishing. That’s why displacement exists. That being said, the statement “water is incompressible” is at least true in Earth physics. I have no idea what would happen to water in a black hole. There’s also no real way to find out. It’s an interesting thought, though.
@@Bobal27 Bruh its not compressibility.. the reason is that the water movement inside the wall during impact absorbs what woudl be redirected into kinetic energy had there been no water. This changes the center of mass of the ball without needing the ball to move. When the ball is full of water, the center of mass is always at the center and does not move, that is why it bounces. This is the same reason why a half-full bottle of water does not flip easily, but a full one does. However, if you try to lay the bottle horizontally, the water spreads uniformily, which repositions the center of gravity, and the bottle will spin more easily.
4:52 You should fill the ball only 80% water so the hull remains (mostly) intact during the freezing and then you can play with the ball filled with ice, not only the ice
Half filling spheres with liquids causes maximum sloshing due to the amount of water and free space being equal, giving the maximum amount of water being given space to move. When liquids that flow like water get transported the rule is to either have things full or empty, to avoid sloshing.

What about a frozen ball without removing the original ball? It should ensure a little bit more. And you may try to fill the ball to 90% before freezing, to compensate the expansion.

I think the problem with the half filled ball is that when it hits the surface, the water inside it splashes everywhere and reduces the total resultant reaction upwards, and spend all the kinetic energy for water to go in various directions.
