Nissan V8 Armada Starter

- I needed to replace the starter in a Nissan V8 Armada and could not find anybody to show me how on You Tube. So here is my version of an instructional video. I strongly recommend that you not do this at home. There are too many steps and too many things that you can break. This project took us a little over two hours even though we had never done this job before. But it was accomplished by a master mechanic with over forty years in the car repair business. I would suspect that a home mechanic would never have enough of the appropriate kinds of tools to finish this job.
We laughed when the book labor rate to change an Armada starter called for only one hour of billable labor. That was totally ridiculous. So if you are a very advanced and experienced mechanic, this video may be helpful even if just to find the location of the starter. The starter symptoms for this job were starter click click and no rotation.
I greatly appreciate the video I did the work myself and with the help of you & another youtuber I save about $1200 it only cost me $100 for the starter & an afternoon of work.
Thanks a million
not mechanically inclined, your video saved me over 600 in parts and labor. thanks
In 2024 today the labor is well over $1k at the dealer.
Very well done video, i much appreciate my 80’s V8 even more. Wife’s ride is going to the repair shop. Screw that!
Very well done video! Good editing, good camera work too. Good narration. I would add that you do NOT need to remove the fuel line. The phlennum can be moved out of the way easily with fuel line still attached. I would also add Since this is an involved kind of job - be 100% sure your new starter actually WORKS. I did this yesterday only to find the new starter was defective. BUMMER!!!!!!!
Just wanted to chime in and confirm this as well; fuel line does not need to be disconnected. Did this job today as a fairly experienced tech and only took me about an hour and a half. Long handle flex head ratchet plus a cheater bar made the starter bolts very easy to remove. Was a pretty easy job imo.
That is ridiculously harder than it needs to be. Thank you for this video. !!!
You're a life saver! Watched this twice and was able to do it on my own (2008 Nissan Titan SE Flex fuel). Saved me tons of money haha Took me just under 4 hours since I didn't have the new starter with me. Thanks for this video!
Thanks for the info for my '14 Infiniti QX80 5.6L V-8. Now I know much, much more than before.
Not unlike the alternator on the old air-cooled Porsches in the late 70's.
OH THOSE ENGINEERS!
This wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. You were smart about taking the throttle body off the plenum. The FSM says to drain coolant and remove the hoses from the throttle body and leave it on the plenum. Your way is better because you don't have to mess with the coolant. It took me 45 minutes to take everything off to get to the starter. 15 minutes to replace the starter. 30 minutes to put it back together. 1.5 hours total install time.........(But I spent 2 hours cleaning the ports and plenum when it was all apart. it was filthy. I also seafoamed the engine afterwards.)
Thanks for the video. I was able to change the starter with no issue . Keep up the good work. Much appreciated.
Thanks for posting this video! It saved me a lot of time trying to figure it out by myself - ended up taking me 2.5hrs. The worse part for me was laying on the engine to get the starter bolts out. Piling on a bunch of old towels softened it up a bit.
Same here about to replace one with no experience I feel more confident to do myself now
2023 here . Need this done to my truck 😢.. thank you
Thanks for the video. Im about to hit this job. Great video.
Thanks for making this video. I am doing this job this weekend. I hope it does not take all weekend though. You did a great job on this.
How long did it end up taking you?
great video! kll be taking it to the shop now. thanks!
I wish mine would come off that easy I been trying all night and all day
Good video! Got it done in about 2.5 hrs
Excelente Vídeo. Very good . Thanks You. From Venezuela
A big thanks....have to replace mine this weekend....I don't know about you but I have no intention of installing a cheap Pep Boy/Autozone unit with this much trouble to replace....
Good video
And good information 👍🏼
Great video, thanks.
Thanks for adding this video! Took most of the day to do, but was taking my time as well as getting my butt kicked getting the starter bolts out. Overall wasn't too hard of a task, had to make a couple trips to the store for additional tools. Definitely couldn't have done it without this video though! #certifiedUA-cammechanic hahaha
What additional tools are need for the fuel lines etc
Just finished. Thanks for the video, took me 3.75 hours.
futch967 there is no such thing as 3.75 hours dumb fuck
3.75 hours is the same thing as saying 3:45. The .75 represents three quarters of an hour.
Where many people believe a quarter is only represented by 25, in reality you may have a quarter of anything. To determine a quarter, you multiply the whole by the decimal.
Dollar: Whole= 1, Quarter=. 25, so 3 quarters: .75 X 1= =.75, pretty simple.
Time: Whole= 60 minutes, Quarter=.25, so 3 quarters: .75 X 60= 45 for 45 minutes.
adam futch you got me there
Gracias por compartir su experiencia., un promedio cuanto es el costo para hacer esta labor, gracias por su respuesta!
Great video
Thanks
Thanks so much good video
have to say what a stupid place to put a starter
Only thing I didn't have was a tool to disconnect the fuel line from the rail. $4. It's not fun but mechanically inclined people that take their time can do it. No worse than changing plugs on a minivan.
thanks you dear I remove self I see video thanks very nice you work
The video is good buy you didn't have to remove the throttle body from the manifold it's only 2 hose to disconnect and by doing that you don't have to change the throttle body gasket
Yeah but you rarely have to change the gasket on a throttle body gasket plus it keeps the coolant system closed so you dont end up with a air bleedi g problem, you dont have to add antifreeze,etc.. But its really to each their own way of doing the work.
Damn these guys are good in making how to videos
Would help to know the size of bolts
Best new starter napa?
Replaced plenum bolts size?
Replaced throttle body bolts size?
Plenum Bracket size bolts?
Tranny dip stick and right side Bracket bolts size.
Use stainless with anti seize.
I'm not an expert but it only took me 2.5 hours. I watched a lot of kinds of videos regarding the swap.and gather all easy steps to do it. I only have a hard time doing it because my Armada is too high for me.
Flatten the tires and have some step stools/ladders next time.
@keyelepro ... What year is this car you're working on? My wife has a 2006 Infiniti QX56.... And I'm thinking Infiniti & Armada are the same car 🚗. The dealer wants $1000. to do this job. Yikes!!!
Is there enough slack on the fuel and coolant lines to where you can just move the plenum enough to get to the starter without disconnecting those lines?
No. It's hard enough doing the. job with the plenum out of the way.
How did you get injectors connectors off?
some one please help me my husband is trying to fix my car he knows the basics but he is not sure what tools are needed to do this job.
this clearly remind me of a GM Northstar motor ? Do this company has a contract with General Motors just dealing with the motors and transmissions haven't got a chance to do research just yet but I will I just wanted a quick response infinity and Nissan are the same companies I know that just curious
How to get the bolts off on the starter? Impact, battery ratchet isn't getting, what to do?
how do im do to open de back door the glass door the tainy one
Glen campwhat kind of tool u dos u uses ti disconect the gas line, and how about the intec gaskets
Harbor Freight sells a 6 pc fuel line disconnect tool. I'm sure auto parts stores have them too. Gaskets were rubber and did not need to be replaced on mine.
Do you know the parts number for the starter?
my car won't start. I don't know if it's the replacement relays or starter. how much would this cost?
Roseana Rosario looking at $350-$450
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thk, for, inf.
How much the labor for that job
my dad has that car in black
Thanks, great video!!! Couple questions: How did you know, starter was bad?? how many miles in this truck?? And, you did not torque those starter bolts??? i think after this big job, I would torque them!! What might be the correct torque?? Thanks, youtheman =)...., by the way, what a fricken pain to change a starter....compared to "regular" cars ;o)
you can go to oreally or autozone to check them
On our Armada, we would turn the key to start, we could hear the relay click, but nothing happened. Solenoid was dead.
In my case it was an intermittent no-crank-no-start with an accompanied clicking noise when the key was turned to start the engine. Sometimes it would work, others it would take four or five tries; very typical of a failing starter solenoid. Best to take care of it while it's still intermittent lest you ended up stranded somewhere when it goes out for good.
labor rate is 1.8 round too 2 hours easy job did in 1.5
I think engineers that design things like this should be publicly flogged in front of the engineering school to dissuade any other idiots from putting starters under the intake plenum or similar flamboyantly incompetent designs.
lmao that’s easier than doing the valve cover gaskets..and my alternator was also as hard
Nice video and advice, thanks!
Here is a link to a write-up:
www.titantalk.com/forums/titan-engine-transmission-drivetrain/156414-how-replace-starter-nissan-titan.html
There is a decent write up on TitanTalk (dot) com with pictures, steps and tools. Search for : how to replace- the starter nissan titan
robdtts thanks for posting this link! I have Infiniti but I believe they're both alike.
This is the most stupidest, bone head location for a starter. There is plenty of room at the normal location at the bottom on the engine. Yup that’s exactly what I did spent 20 minutes looking for the starter. I’ve never had to look for the starter on anything else.
HELP!
Of course Nissan put the starter there. I'll never buy another one
pain in the ass....
Man this is way too much 😭
Well at least you don't have to go under the car to change the starter😂😂😂😂😂
Yea too bad that would have made it a whole lot easier...
Well, there is that. You can see everything.
What kind of a design of making too much trouble to replace a starter, better buy Toyota
How often do you replace your starters? I have seen Bosch starter motors go 20+ yrs.
Shitty Deal once More Cadillac Northstar is easier
Another reason to not buy a Nissan.....
