I use the same method but do use a flat pencil, notching my guide stick to make the lead flat with the bottom.

Check out my Instagram @vnwoodwork. I should have a few more details on it there.
Ultimately, you begin with a box that will fit you hood perfectly within 1/8”. Then you have to draw a rough arch. I have a video of how to make identical rafters for the arch on my insta.

It's a Rigid multitool. But many other popular brands sell the same tool.
