Austin is still very cool - thriving bar and restaurant scene, performing arts, comedy, sports, low crime rate, massive industries. The trick is to cap the success. Don't make it so big that crime finds its way there because these broke losers from the ghetto think it's fine to be a scourge wherever there's money (think SF and Chicago - which has gotten way worse).
Most of the musicians and scenesters moved away years ago... too expensive. The club Rogan owns (The Ritz) was the biggest bar on 6th street from mid 90's to mid 2000's. My drummer was a bartender there, so our band and friend's bands played there many times. There were fist fights EVERY night, but never any guns. Now, it's gun play every day. RIP Austin!!!
