    Yes, just look at the crowd he draws. People like him and people like his style.
    Everyone loves a pounder off the tee, and the rest of his game backs him up to win majors.

    Ok, so what if McIlroy or Fowler suddenly after the pandemic did this? It would be " is this a rejuvenated Rory? Well, you can't ignore the results." But the problem is, jocks are jocks and rarely become nerds, this nerd got yoked over the summer and is reinventing the game. I say all the power to him.

    This conversation reminded me of John Denver’s breaking into the country music scene. It was quite an upheaval. Now when you look at the country music folks they look a lot more like Denver did in the early 70s than say Willie Nelson did. Gotta run with what works. I’m not a golfer, don’t need the stress, but my kid and his kid are golfers so I watch.

    First of all Go Rangers.
    Second of all, He's changing the game. I think Golf having _any_ direction at all is good for the sport. All sports are always moving to bigger, faster, and stronger. You can like him, you can not like him, the fact that people are talking about golf at all is good for the sport. I think he's the much needed heel that golf needs in 2021.

      Go Rangers indeed! And yes, agreed. Something that brings interest to the game is good! And I happen to think what he's doing is good for the entertainment value of the game anyway.

    DeChambeau is great for golf. This is called progress. Progress can never be bad in any sport.
    in 20 years, many more will be doing the same thing as DeChambeau.
    Personally, I think there are good times ahead for golf.

    People are acting like he's winning by Witchcraft and they want to burn him at the stake. And a lot of those people are the ones that are losing against him. Weekend golfers have always sucked compared to the people on TV so no one is going to change that. But we love his cocky attitude and when he bombs it off the tee! He has a complete game and lots of people lose sight of that.

    Even as a weekend golfer i leave the house knowing people will hate me for my play style. Gonna have a class of prudes who judge your every move when you are young, unique, and unconventional. Old men of the sport despise that and Bryson is the start to a new generation of golfers who get shut out.

    I give Bryson credit to have accomplished what he has but as a ambassador for the game he won’t be due to how he approached the game, I believe golf is a journey of discovering and finding your swing and is a journey in your life as a hobby for many years to come, about 90% of golfers will not follow his way since is so unconventional and dry and mathematical, he took the fun out of it, maybe just for him is fun, but overall those who would like to learn it will not have Bryson in their mind to copy, so finding your swing is an amazing journey and it should be fun that’s how you bring audience into the tournaments, for the excitement go the unexpected.

    It's that remote controlled ball at the end of tournies like this US Open that really make the diff. Guy a foot off the hole on straight putts all day, then rails in two left to right 6 ft swingers with speed to take the tournie. Uh huh.

  • @declaneric

    DeChambeau is a shot in the pan. If 400 yard drives was the difference, he would have a lot more trophies. Same with the air density, the vectoring on the greens. He's making a lofty assumption: that he can replicate the same stroke over and over and over, marked to his scientific measurements. Truth is, consistency doesn't come from all that noise, it comes from muscle memory. And muscle memory comes from your body feeling every single inch of what the shoulders, hips, ankles, wrists, and hands are doing, knowing when you've caught the sweet spot in the swing, and doing that over and over.
    |
    You can do a little math: wind speed accounts for X amount of correction in where you're aiming. If you know the humidity, you can assume a heavier ball, so go up a club for a little extra distance. But vectoring? Everyone does that. They just don't turn it into an algebra homework assignment. It seems like a lot of wasted extra effort that doesn't net him much over what everyone else does. He vectors and vectors.... and vectors.... and he still misses the putt. Did he account for WHEN in the day he's playing? More moisture in the air in the morning. Is he accounting for green speed based on the direction the blades of grass are facing? 'Cause they follow the sun through out the day. Fast putting east in the morning turns to putting slow in the afternoon....
    |
    My point is, DeChambeau is good for the PGA, because people like watching him come out and try to be flashy with monster drives. John Daly did that back in the day. But is DeChambeau good for the game on tour? Not really. He'll draw crowds. But if those big bangs aren't translating to wins, it'll look like a lot of flash and little substance. And he'll hurt the game for everyone else, if course designers start making courses longer to accommodate guys who belong on the Long Drive Tour trying to albatross par 5's. And if that happens, the rest of the PGA tour will suffer for it, just to account for, at most, a handful of people.
    |
    So, yeah. I like DeChambeau, a lot. I like his big drives, they're entertaining. But long term, it'll hurt the tour more than help it. Just wait until 8,000+ yard PGA courses start popping up, you'll see what I mean.

    I think Bryson is great for golf. His attitude leaves a little bit to be desired. I saw some comments about how vectoring and air density calculations are useless because humans can't act on those calculations. Speaking as a STEM major, I can attest to the fact that science nerds have a very different relationship with concepts like inertia, density, torque, etc. To them these aren't just concepts, these are tangible working ideals that they are actively aware of and evaluating 24/7. This isn't just a physical advantage, but one that plays into his mental game aswell. Even when the courses change, the physics fundamentals don't, and I can imagine that brings him great comfort and adds confidence to his game.

    There is a reason you don't see long drive champions on the PGA tour, is because the dedicated their swing to the bomb. You can't win tournaments if you don't have the other part of the game dialed in. That is why Bryson is different, he has the other part of the game. In his first major, the final day, he was the only golfer to score under par in that round. Every golfer takes the rules of the game to the limit. When I hear, "respect the heritage of that game" it drives me nuts. What they are saying is "Since I can't do what he does, he shouldn't be able to do that" Fitzpatrick is one of those golfers that looks at him as just a bomber and that is the only reason he has success. That he pushes the rules to the edge. But I would say to Fitzpatrick, why are you putting with the pin still in the hole? Does that give you and advantage? Why don't you respect the game and put like everyone else did before that became a legal play? Bryson is good for the game.

    Just saw the original vid get recommended to me, immediately subscribed, came to this video. I think of Trevor Bauer as another very similar personality in sports - has a chill but somewhat blunt personality, who uses science and data to perfect his craft, which is slightly controversial in some aspects (like substances + spin rates) and is also outspoken and in the headlines of the sport.

    It’s interesting to me that people bag on him. What’s amazing about pro athletes is that they are so much better than we are. I’m a low-mid handicap golfer and I can’t imagine wanting to watch a bunch of guys as good as me play golf. We also should encourage and celebrate people who use science and math to improve skills not just being physically gifted. Even in the UFC and boxing we are seeing people really use science and fight strategy to be the best. Those guys who have a high ring IQ are unstoppable and constantly beat guys who are just pure physical specimens. I think Bryson is great for the game, he crushes the ball but it’s not just some big dumb guy he’s smart and methodical and he has been trying to win by asking the game easier which makes it more accessible to the average person.

    For me, it's not about what he does, it's about how long he takes for basically every shot. The game is generally considered boring, and when you have a guy that's making it take even longer, even if he is making good shots, it likely takes more away from the game than it adds to it.
    If he can speed up his process to minimize the amount of time between shots, then maybe he can be better for the game than worse.

    I don't find him compelling to watch as a golfer for the same reason I never really found Pete Sampras compelling to watch on the tennis court compared to someone like Andre Agassi. But active hostility towards him (either from other players or particularly from spectators) is a bit much - especially in one of the few sports today that still maintains such an emphasis on good sportsmanship. Yes I can understand how his clinical approach - and the slowness which accompanies it - could be frustrating to other players. It's not the only frustration facing a golfer on the course, though!

    • @SportsQuestions

    I think the only issue (not really an issue) I have with Bryson is the air density thing..... no human has that much control over the power their body exerts that the density of the air would matter.... same with spin, trajectory, landing angle... all the things.... But I get the idea that it apparently gives him confidence in the shot.... but it's the concept of taking it out of play imo... he's potentially creating extra mental games for himself by worrying about things that don't matter as much........... HOWEVER I also wonder if maybe he is intentionally making his mental game based around things like that that "dont really matter" but "give him confidence" , because if he can have his focus on one thing, it won't be on another thing, which could be a potentially catastrophic thing. (btw i went to school for aerospace engineering... so i could be very biased here lol)

    • @SportsQuestions
      @SportsQuestions  3 роки тому

      You may be on to something! If he feels like he has complete control and understanding over every aspect of the shot, then he can be much more confident.

    • @ApexHunter89

      You must not know much about physics... air density absolutely has an effect. Try running a 400m sprint in a swimming pool in the same time as you do on land. Both are fluids with different densities. It's all about drag.

    • @PBMS123
      @PBMS123 3 роки тому

      It could have a huge effect depending on the course. At a sea level course, 10C you have an air density of 1.23kg/m^3 at a 3000m elevation course like Mt Massive, at 35C 100% humidity it the air denisty is 0.99kg/m^3
      Thats a difference of 23%. That's 23% less drag on the ball. Drag is proportional to the velocity^2.
