I'm 24 years old and the ONLY reason I started watching TCM was because of Robert Osbourne.. His voice and face captured my attention long enough too really start appreciate older movies.. When he would give the back story on a movie.... it was magic.
A man like no other ... TCM hasn't been the same since Robert Osborne's death. He was TCM - He was the reason why that channel has avid viewers today .
Robert Osborne was SUCH a Gentleman and a Real Classy Interviewer! I LOVED watching him and listening to him on Turner Classic Movies.❤ He was the Best Host, in my Honest Opinion and Very Much Missed.
I am just watching it on tv right now... May 3, 2018.. I am crying my head off.. He made the old movies come alive!!! HE gave them class! He oozed class! I hope Robert can see from Heaven and know how much he was loved and respected!
Lord, I still miss this man. I've been watching TCM since its inception and I have noticed that since Robert's passing, TCM is showing more movies from the sixties through the EIGHTIES and I have been DVR'ing less and less (since I work full time). I think Mr. Osborne kept TCM "in check" and sadly the channel has certainly diminished since his passing. And no, I don't want to buy TCM wine.
I miss Robert as well. The new hosts are passable, but no one had the insight of Robert when it comes to classic films. I do really enjoy Noir Alley, and its host, Eddie Mullen though. He has an extensive authentic background in film, as did Robert, and provides little known details about the backstories of production which bring back memories of Robert's introductions. Ben Mankowicz does a good job, although his constant hand movements are bothersome. (lol..I can't help it, I tend to focus on his hands while he's talking). Anyway, just wanted to share the opinions of an old lady who has been in love with classics since childhood....and no, I don't want to buy TCM wine either!!
I too noticed the programming change at Turner Classic Movies showing movies from the '80s was something they never did before it was always about the old movies. I miss Robert Osborne he had a way of comforting you. That will never be anyone else like him.. sorry but Ben Michael it's doesn't Capture Me the Way Robert Osborne did
@@letsmakemoney8027 Well, the 1980s are a long time ago now, but movie classics from the 1980s, there are only a few. But TCM replays the same old classics over and over again, lot of those I already have on DVD. I want TCM to dig more into the film vaults and show seldom seen films.
@@lamarravery4094 good point there was some good movies from the '80s but they were in classics like before the '80s. I don't know if you remember Channel 5 in New York what they used to do when an actor died after the news they would play their movies for a whole week. I really miss those days
@@letsmakemoney8027 I was talking about classic 1980s films like the Natural, Out of Africa, Chariots of Fire, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Empire Strikes Back, ect.
how brilliant and how loved he was. a class act, never to be replaced! can't imagine he would be pleased with how uninteresting and boring the channel has today become. some introductions are informative, but in a "scripted and unfeeling sort of way", and how many times must we hear the hosts "gush" about how "great" the other is. same spots, over and over, enough already. those of us who learned to love tcm because of robert owe him a world of thanks. if there should be a scheduled film i may have missed, i always check you tube to see if there is an introduction for said movie by mr. osborne. for me, seems to make the film infinitely better...... he was and always will be the best!!!!!
Well stated, as I shared elswhere, none of the hosts today have half Mr. Osborne’s warmth. I feel like I’m being condescendingly lectured to by some and the others are merely cardboard cutouts. I always enjoyed Mr Osborne’s intros and exits for such depth of knowledge in such little a time frame.
I realize I'm super late to the party here but I too have fond memories of Mr. Osbourne on TCM. What can I say about this gentleman that hasn't already been said? I like so many others here in this comment section and beyond owe Robert for laying the foundation for my own appreciation for classic cinema. The man was clearly passionate about the art of film and you could hear it in his voice. The way he presented himself, the classiness he exuded and extensive love of movies made him an excellent host for the channel. I find myself watching old introductions of his and just listening to Robert talk about the backstories of these cinematic gems; I even found out he did introductions for Adult Swim on the Zune devices and he gave shows like Superjail or Tim and Eric the same level of prestige and respect as a certified classic like Gone with the Wind. I know it was a bit; the juxtaposition of a distinguished host presenting off the wall comedies that are a far cry from the films he usually associates himself with, but it showed what a good sport Robert was. Robert Osbourne WAS TCM. I still am an avid fan of the channel and while the newer hosts like Ben or Alicia are great in their own right; I plan on reading one of Alicia's books soon, respectfully they don't hold a candle to Mr. Osbourne and I'm sure they're well aware of that. His respect for film was contagious, he was sophisticated without coming off as snobby or condescending, dare I say he was the perfect fit. I'm hoping Robert, 6 years after his passing, is able to see just how many people miss him; just the amount of younger folks like myself (I was in high school when I first started watching TCM) he got to sit down and fall in love for these classics in much the same way he was in his youth. We love you Robert, I know you're hosting film screenings in the most prestigious theaters Heaven has to offer with some of the brightest stars Hollywood ever had in attendance. Rest in power friend
Watching Osborne host TCM made me love classic films. I remember going to work, and couldn't wait to get home to watch him intro a movie and then watch it. I don't want to watch classic films without his inros and outros.
@spicecrop Some of his intros and outros have been posted here. Not enough, to be sure, but watch all you can. I will, too. Every time I see one of these pretenders to the throne speak, it just makes me miss Bob Osborne all the more. I am sure that, with the possible exception of Red Eddie Muller, they all have ghostwriters. With Osborne, there was personal passion and knowledge that couldn't have been ghosted. He always knew so much that he could have written every word he spoke. (He may have dictated some of his talks into a tape recorder, or to a stenographer.) However, with the other "film historian" and expert hosts... For instance, I speak at times of Ben Mankiewicz' ghost-writer. (There were some great story-tellers, but they weren't regulars, like the movie historian who told an unforgettable story from the '50s. Van Heflin and his wife were at a Hollywood party one night, and Judy Garland was regaling the revelers. And I mean regaling. Judy sang song after song after song, 'til dawn. Heflin's missus kept reminding him he had to get up practically at dawn, to work on the picture he was making, but he would always counter that they were experiencing something that would be unique in their entire lives. And he was right.)
Thank you @24psfan for this post. Sooo saddened to learn that Robert Osborn is no longer with us. He brought me many years of comfort with his passionate narrations of these old films I love so much, a love that began as a young teen enjoying them with my grandmother. Rich, warm, comforting movies. A lost era. Robert made them even that much more special. He will truly be missed.
We would get those channel previews for the cable company to decide what they were going to get. So we got like a 3 day preview of TCM, and just like a previous comment, he drew me in with his calm smooth voice and his knowledge of movies. So when the cable company got TCM, I was over the moon. I always thought, man, does this guy ever go home, does he ever have free time, he is on every introduction. You will be missed.
He was a man that you felt was a member of the family. Truly a class act. Greatly missed. May God have him in his loving arms. Hard to believe its been seven years since he passed.
My father passed away this past March. It hurt me greatly not just because I love and miss him, but because I hadn't seen him in eight years. I spoke to him regularly. I miss Robert Osbourne because he reminded me of my father and I was planning to attend a TMC function to see him in person, but he passed away. Rest In Peace dear sir. May God take you in his embrace as he has my father.
None of the TCM hosts now have half the warmth of Mr. Osborne, I always feel I’m being condescendingly lectured to by some, the others are like cardboard cutouts, just…..there.
I met him and ask him. What movie was his favorite he told me more than ONE but his top choice was. Gone with the wind 1939 l said to him thank you. He told do me a favor dont tell anyone that was his favorite movie l asked him why he said it best that way no one who KNOW the day he died everyone wanted to found out what was his favorite movie only a few people knew it gone with the wind he will never be forgotten god bless him
Robert was an observer of the golden age of cinema, and was a careful historian. Ben has the experience in the industry and will be a fitting replacement. Robert's big shoes won't be filled, all the way.
Turner Classic movies I love as long as you keep the 20's & 30's alive. Anything, from the 60's 70's doesn't give these sheen. The entertainment heads & CEO"s picked an icon that introduces the reasoning & concept of the script. Keep up the good work-Lisa

Is there a way to buy all his movie tidbits and openings? I am a real cousin to both Bette Davis and Lucille Ball, I loved him for how he loved them... God be with him.
I started recording films from TCM onto DVD from 2005. And I did record Robert Osbourne's intros to films onto DVD with the film. So I've kept him alive.
I recall one of the special features on “The Wizard of Oz” dvd/blu ray was a show about the movie hosted by Angela Lansbury. In it, she said that “The Wizard of Oz” has been seen by more people than any other film. Also, it seems that “Gone With the Wind” is not regarded quite as warmly as it once was, due in part to it’s depiction of African-Americans. Both “Citizen Kane” and “The Godfather” tend to be rated higher than GWTW. Personally, I’ll take “The Wizard of Oz” over any of them.
