I have a question, is that model filter earlier than 2004? I know with our filter (which is a 2012 and the same brand and an SD40) we can rinse the sand out from the drain at the bottom and not shop vac it all out.
Yeah it's tough with plastic , over time they get brittle and break or if your like me where you have snow and ice and the ground heaves and thaws stuff can break😖 thank you for watching 👍
You might need a new spring in top where the handle is when you move it to different positions, sounds like it's not closing it off all the way ,but no way to tell unless you take it apart, it's a simple fix and cheap part, good luck and thank you for watching!👍😊

The plastic will be broken or missing , inspect it carefully the gaps should all be the same distance apart (uniform),that is what prevents the sand from passing through, and also indicates when your sand needs to be changed if its passing through the small gaps it means your sand is worn down!
No not at all sand filter pools in my opinion are the best because you dont need to worry about adding DE, or cleaning or replacing filters, they last a long time and easy to backwash and clean!👍

I have a 300 lb sand filter which I know is due for changing out sand. I have a 25k gallon pool. Do you think it would be better to switch to a 325 cartridge filter?
You can, it's all about maintenance at least for me, I prefer sand filters because when they start getting low pressure a 30 sec back wash and your done and the sand can typically last 5 plus years, whereas a cartridge if your in a area with alot of foliage or pollen or have kids its gonna clog the filter alot quicker and then you have to take it apart all the time pull the filter out spray it clean, eventually have to buy new ones and it's just not what I prefer I just feel it's harder to keep a clear pool, I like low maintenance, cartridge filters work good it's just all about preference and what style you like! As long as the center tube is long enough or cut shorter to fit the whole assembly would work with pentair or Hayward but I did have pentair as well listed for that model but the seller on Amazon no longer carried replacement laterals so it was removed from my description sorry about any confusion!
You can try but i wouldn't recommend it you risk damaging your laterals thats alot of weight pushing against thin plastic and even the smallest sand filter weighs 100 plus pounds with sand! Also the snd is wet and full of sediment some sand filters it's almost like cement and wont come out!
Well done. Last thing I would add is to backflush filter before putting it to pool returns to get rid of the dust from new sand.

You should have on the side of your sand filter the model and the amount of pounds of sand it holds, its usually a sticker or label!
those lateral push up so you can take the whole thing out, without having to unscrew

My above ground sand filter is trickling pretty fast out where the backwash part comes out on the top, any ideas to fix it?

I would recommend some Oatey piping joint compound then teflon tape and you shouldn't have any leaks at the connection after that! Good luck!👍

I agree that's why I never use purple primer, but in this case didnt need to look pretty just needed to work! He could care less what it looked like!

Your pool would not be clearing up or the filter sand in your pool! Your pressure would be off, It should be changed every 3 to 5 years!

Well during covid start up they only had purple primer which the owner didn't care I never use it but it's meant to work not look pretty and leak!!
