Glad I came across your UA-cam. Great info and instructions. I just recieved a 64st from a friend and I'm new to this so I'm trying to learn as much as possible. Thank you..
Thanks !! I am glad I can help. My goal is to make sure you understand how the GPS works and basically how to get from point A to point B safely. You can also join the Facebook Group - Outdoor Recreation Using GPS - you comment post comments and share stories too
I bought my first Garmin in 1990 if that's possible. It was a Garmin 45 and it was the greatest thing to happen since sliced bread. The only real change in handhelds is accuracy. The 45 was accurate enough to find the truck but she wasn't that great finding a stand. I've had a few etrexs since then and have always wanted a couple things improved. It would be nice to mark something without having to name it or alternatively forgetting what point 041 was. I would also like to somehow improve the way you toggle around to name things. Doesnt matter I guess. I have a 64st coming and the majority of functions on it will be very close to even the 45 never mind a new etrex. It's the little things that frustrate you after a while.
Hi Thomas - let's say you are at point A, you want to get to point B. You already marked point B as a waypoint. So, press 'Find' button, then Waypoints and select point B and click 'go. Then you backout to your main panel, use the page button and select compass. There should be a red arrow on your compass. Move the GPS so the tip of the arrow points to the top of compass. Start walking/driving in that direction and you will arrive at your point B. Hope this helps...
Lukus, the 64st comes preloaded 100K mapping, that is what the 't' represents. You can add mapping by using the micro sd card underneath the batteries.
@@outdoorrecreationusinggps for some reason I thought that the 100k preloaded maps that come with the 64st were an sd card that came with the device. And if you purchase a separate topo maps sd , in order to load them to the device, I thought the original sd that came with the device had to be removed first. In other words I thought you could not save the maps to the device. You only got the maps that are on the particular sd card that’s in place underneath the batteries.
Hi Peter, the GPS you choose depends on the area you are hiking and camping. If the area has alot of cover, thick canopy then choose one with an external antenna. That will ensure you will get a signal. If it is open area - then any Oregon or Montana will work.
For marine maps, they need to be in POI format. Garmin has marine maps - here is the link. I have never used them so I cannot give you a rating but its a good place to start. buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/c452-c455-p1.html
For the price right now the 64st is the winner. The 64st is on amazon for $198 and the 64s is going for more money then that!? Not sure why? But the 64st being cheaper in price is the winner. It also has 8 gig internal memory vs the 64s 4 gig. And the 64st comes with topo installed where the 64s does not.
PS. I believe the topographic detail you now pay for was traditionally free. Are they really making us pay for better detail. That's a rip off. JUST like my expensive marine mounted emap was rigged so that for only 4 or 5 hundred extra dollars you could buy a chip to give your new machine more detail. Just give me all the detail available and I'll just by another unit down the line.
Superb video on the differences.
It took me 20 videos to find the difference between 64s and 64st. Thank you for this lol.

John, when you get your 64S, come into Sportsmans Warehouse in Mesa and I will help you....
How can I use this as a directional device as I hike from a to b, say at night or in a white out?

Can you load topographical maps into the 64S..?
The 64S has 4GB of internal memory and the 64st has 8GB of internal memory of which you can load additional maps
@@outdoorrecreationusinggps Thank you!!
Hell yes i do.
You can easily load the topo maps on the 64, 64s and others.
100% yes i did.
Will the 64st keep all those maps on it even if you remove the sd card out of the back?

Hello. I would like to get a handheld GPS for backwoods hiking and camping. Can you recommend one? Thank you!
