Even Portugal, which is an independent country since 1143 A.D., centuries before Spain even existed and it's constantly confused with Spain let alone Catalunia! :D
David Sales if we are talking historically, yes, it is a Catalan festival. If we are talking geographically, it is both Catalan AND Spanish. Because every region and city on the game board is located in BOTH Catalunya and Spain. Catalunya has not been recognized as an independent nation by the international community, so it is absolutely correct to say it is Spanish. Sorry, but that's the way the world works.
even in the Spanish Constitution, Catalonia is recognized as a historical nation. But it is true that we are not yet an independent nation. In any case, there is no one in Spain that refers "Castells" as a Spanish tradition, everyone refers to a Catalan tradition. In the same way as when talking about "toros" if it is understood that it is a Spanish tradition because there are "bulls" throughout Spain but "castells" are only in Catalonia. (Sorry for my english 😊 )
It is indeed a Catalan festival, and hence a Spanish one, just as you can say the Galician muñeira (my family is from Galicia) is a Spanish traditional dance and consider it yours, in that sense, with regard to the rest of the world. In Spain, Spaniards (including Catalans) would generally refer to castells as a Catalan tradition, yes, but the most reasonable way for foreigners to think of it is as a Spanish tradition. Simliarly, Americans might identify ragtime with the Missouri musical tradition, but outside the US the normal (and correct) association would be with the country, not the particular state. Making the misleading, and plainly and dishonestly absurd, observation that Castells are not Spanish but Catalan, is to demand a de-facto recognition of Catalan independence when it is not independent. I do wonder, faced with these attitudes, what the motivation to push for actual independence is, if, things being as they are now, the world is to consider and refer to Catalonia and all things Catalan as if it were an independent country anyway. Of course, this is part of broader a socio-political campaign we know all too well. I doubt Tom will appreciate such political controversies in response to his boardgame reviews (and even less to be told he has made a mistake, when in fact he has not).
i take your word on the components, but i still hate the look of it.... i really really dislike it...... i own 400 games but i know this one won't be part of the collection....
You're gonna miss out on some quality games if a look will lead you to not even trying it. Some of my favorite games are blah looking but are fantastic games. To each their own I guess...
there is plenty of quality games with a great look too......i rather play those. If not the look, at least the theme has to be interesting to me..... a game as Ethnos for example. Castell looks really ugly, the theme is boring , and beside... it is not even a mind blowing game...... definitely a pass. Let me get those juicy great games with a fantastic look instead,... especially for 50$.
@@mauriandlaw I have to strongly disagree. I LOVE this theme. It's always intriguing to see different/unique themes like this one instead of typical fantasy or sci-fi. I don't think the board is amazing to look at but it does justice and shows everything VERY clearly. Got this for only $20 brand new. You said this isn't a mind blowing game but you listed Ethnos?
Tom: “I’m a balance man myself”. Brilliant. 😊
The bag looks like the traditional Catalan cap/hat. That could be why it's so big.
Castells is not spanish festival, it is a catalan festival 😉

It's crazy how the D20 looks like Zee
That's the idea? All the dice are based on Dice Tower contributors.
Tom, just from a structural engineering point of view, you'd be placed at the bottom.
"The smaller folk they put at the top", a.k.a children :P
I want to get this game just to punch out the cardboard.
what a ugly board did you cut it out yourself, Tom, diy package!
I hate the look of this game, and the components seem cheap.... The theme bores me, i wouldn't buy it even on a huge sale discount.
