Would it be reasonable to align all the photos using the best star field, then combine them in lighten mode, which should bring in all the meteors? I realize the horizon will shift and that will need to be masked in the individual frames. That would keep the meteors accurate in position against the stars. One could then invert a frame with a good star field and blot out the stars in the frames with the meteors so those star fields don’t contribute to the final image.

You could do that, but it would also bring out the stars next to the meteors which could get confusing when trying to "paint in" just the meteors.

Is it not possible to do this all in photoshop? Or do you have to also use lightroom?

Yep, it is possible to do all of this in Photoshop, I just like to use Lightroom for the basic adjustments (brightness, contrast, etc.)

I did not understand why you used a white layer mask for the second layer but black mask for the rest? And yet you said you will do "exactly the same for the rest of the layers" but the second layer was "painted" but the rest were done using click - shift click!! In any case, I tried the same steps in PS but instead of getting meteors I am getting a thick line where the meteor should be. Or I missed something entirely?

When I click - shift click a meteor, I am painting in a meteor. But when you first do it, it is hidden because you are hiding the layer mask by shift clicking it. Once you unhide, the meteor will appear and anything else you "painted." The reason I use a white layer mask for the second one only is because you don't want to hide the first image (the bottom one). Once you get past the 2nd image, you can hide the rest and paint them over using a black mask.
