What I really love about this new Outworld is the little nods to ancient and medieval civilizations it has in its overall aesthetic. From Ancient China, to the Aztec Empire, and maybe even some hints of European and Native American. It's very pleasing to the eye, while not being loaded with stuff. It feels like Liu Kang realized that Shao Kahn's konquest merging realms like Edenia into outworld resulted in such a conceptual knot that he couldn't quite think about how to unravel them. So he tried to make sure that Outworld's all-encompassing mantle over its original components stood as a symbol of unity rather than domination.
It must be weird for Liu Kang to see all of this. He invented and shaped this entire timeline and he's playing along in his own world, like a videogame developer playing his own game and interacting with the NPC's. His interaction with General Shao, whom he remembers as Shao Khan is interesting.
I feel like after all the timeline hopping bullshit he’s been through mixed with living for eons and the keeper of time has given more than enough time to process , accept, and overall remove any sort of harsh or hostile feelings he has towards anyone who did him wrong in the past timelines.
I like what they did with Shao. Instead of being a heartless tyrant like he was in the previous games he’s as fierce as he was in the previous games but he seems to genuinely care for Outworld and doesn’t want his people to feel like they are being enslaved by Earthrealm. I’d respect him if he didn’t approve of Shang Tsung and Quan Chi torturing and killing innocent people though.

The problem is that General Shao and his right hand man Reiko literally lose every single battle they fight in the story mode. Compared to someone like Shang Tsung, who not only deceives the Outworlders, but also defeats a few of Titan Shang Tsung’s minions and convinces Sub-Zero to join his side, General Shao has literally no notable achievements to his name that we ever get to see on screen. I know that it’s mentioned that General Shao has accomplished many many things, but the general rule of thumb in storytelling is “show, don’t tell.” *They never showed us why we should fear General Shao.* They never showed us why we should take General Shao seriously. They never showed us how General Shao is a formidable opponent. He was just a jobber for Shang Tsung who did nothing but get his ass handed to him in every scene he showed up in. The closest he ever came to that was successfully wielding Shinnok’s amulet to trap Mileena, Kitana and Tanya, and even then, he got his ass handed to him shortly after by SINDEL of all people, so it wasn’t even a complete success at that. That is what I mean when I say General Shao is a jobber: he does nothing but take orders and get his ass kicked every time he does

5:24 this Sindel is by far the best one, she’s a lot calmer than her other counterparts, granted those two were homicidal maniacs, but still, this one seems to be more gentle and understanding, not just screeching 24/7 Not to mention, that voice is WONDERFUL!! I could listen to that all day
In nearly every game she appears in, Sindel was always a kind and genuine person. In MKIII, MKIX, and MKX, she was mind controlled. In Deception and Armageddon, she was free from the mind control and fought to save Kitana and the restored Edenia. MKXI is the only outlier where they made her a heartless monster for no reason.
I love the new rivalry. Lui Kang enemy has always been Shang Tsung not Shao Khan. Ever since MK9 I always knew the ultimate rivalry was between Raiden and Shao Khan. I'm going to love where this series takes those foes.
I've always wanted these characters to meet. It's so strange that they've never met or interacted with each other until now. It's actually a really unique and original idea if you think about it.
I really like how the Mortal Kombat tournament in this timeline is basically a deterrence from war between the realms by showing their strength to the other. Kinda like how in Naruto the Chunin Exams were just a way to show off the strength of their up and coming ninja to other nations to prevent wars.
Humans have an inherent thirst for violence. From the Roman colosseum to gory horror movies, we’ve come up with many clever ways to suppress that more primitive aspect of our brains in safer ways for the general population.
My personal thoughts are that since in this timeline Outworld isn't ruled by Shao Kahn, the realm has a higher focus on opulence and appearence as power versus being various groups of territorial, barbaric, and/or ruthless tribes and clans vying for dominance.
In the original timeline(Midway era) Shao was a general and advisor to Onaga who was the original emperor in that timeline. Shao in this game is just back in his original role
I always wonder what goes through Liu Kang's mind every time he meets these new versions of people he had encountered many times before. In this scene, specially when he talks to Shao. The flashbacks must be crazy.
Given that this has been a peaceful tournament for centuries, I kinda wonder what it was like for past champions. I have the sneaking suspicion that Madame Bo may have been one of Earthrealm's former champions in the tournament decades prior.
I hope neatherrealm studios will stick with this timeline, people always make fun of mortal kombat for the many reboots it had but I feel they've struck a golden opportunity to make mortal kombat theirs if they continue this story

That was probably the idea. Since Shao Kahn was a warmonger in power in previous timelines, Outworld itself was going to be a ravaged wasteland. He had zero regards to anything that wasn't in the interest of conquest, so no one ever really had an opportunity to establish a culture

Outworld looks like Edenia.
One thing I don't understand about this timelines Outworld. Did Outworld merge with Edenia or doesn't Edenia exist anymore?
Since the ruling dynasty is Edenian, my guess is that they merged and then Edenians somehow took over, likely after Onaga's death if he wasn't deleted from existence by Liu Kang at the dawn of time.
Seems Edenia is a place in Outworld. Because Sindel and her daughters and Baraka are Edenian but live on Outworld.

That was probably the idea. Since Shao Kahn was a warmonger in power in previous timelines, Outworld itself was going to be a ravaged wasteland. He had zero regards to anything that wasn't in the interest of conquest, so no one ever really had an opportunity to establish a culture
