Just because I said it’d be great to see it fly again doesn’t mean it will, Even if it did get to the point it becomes airworthy once again, It is not up to us the Viewer to decide how much time or money is to be invested into the project. Because at the end of the day Flying or not it’s helping create some great content for us to watch and potential income through the adverts shown in the videos. So I couldn’t care if it flew again as the first video of this plane is one that randomly popped up into my suggested feed watched it and have binge watched a number of videos on the channel since, So at minimum that plane has picked up an extra subscriber for the channel.
The reason we love your videos is because there is no big production, no super cuts to not show mistakes, and no million dollar shop talking about a budget car build only costing $30,000. You hit walls, get frustrated and work the problem like those of us who are not hyper knowledgeable but mechanically inclined. It is comforting for you to vocalize and go through the same process even those of us who just build cars do. So yes we are invested in your work because we are invested in our work. That was awesome getting the "Clear Prop" from Jimmy! It brought a huge smile to my face when that engine roared back to life. That plane needs to be back in the air. Let’s fly! (And Phoenix sounds like one hell of a good name)
Commercial A&P here. Depending on what you find when you start to inspect it the cost to repair this aircraft can, and likely will, approach the cost of purchasing a flying example. I hope your spar ends up passing the inspection! The main thing I'd be worrying about is corrosion, and any damage done to the engines from sitting so long and not being preserved properly. Remember the saying: "buy the engines, get the aircraft for free!" That being said, there is something magical about bringing an old bird like this back to life. I'll be looking forward to seeing continued progress on this in the coming months.
Was thinking the same myself....can't wait to see the parts that need certification to get the necessary paperwork...hope we get to see the full restoration back to flying standard...👍👍👍

If he can get a UA-cam channel up and running into a full business that pays his bills, and then some, off of the restoration of this airplane? I'm sure he could buy a clean, flying example for likely much less than it'd take this thing to be airworthy again. This old pile of trash can do something that the well maintained pristine one cannot though... This one can alter his career path and his life's trajectory quite dramatically! As a car restorer, seeing you finally start that engine gave me goosebumps. It absolutely made my day. During my day, I'd literally find myself wondering about you starting this plane and finally making it yours, especially after that cheeky bugger offered 20k for it. I cant wait to see the future episodes and how far you actually take this rebuild. Loving this series
In my youth I loved the 401. I thought it was the coolest twin in the air (it's still in my top 3), so of course I'd love to see you finish and fly her. I'm so happy you got an engine up and running. It's the first step of many more, but, as the old axiom goes, "The longest journey begins with a single step". Congratulations on your first step, and good luck and prayers on every step that comes after. Just a thought, once you get it up and running, and are happy with it, it might be fun to take the Phoenix to Oshkosh so everyone who've been watching your progress see her in real life, and congratulate you in person.
I'm so pleased for you that the engine started and she's finally yours. What a gentleman the previous owner is by not letting the $20k bribe him away from letting you have it. I gave a little cheer myself when No. 1 barked into life. Onward and Upward my friend, Onward & Upward.
I rebuilt a 1978 Kawasaki KZ400 recently and now I am in the process of fixing a 2014 Kia Sorento. And even though my projects are beyond tiny compared to getting a heavily weathered Cessna started, I have been watching these videos and cheering the guys on like its a football game. And because of what ive been working on for the last few weeks, I am emotionally invested now from being able to relate (sort of) to the ups and downs of getting something running that at one time stood no chance of firing up. These videos are like my soap opera.

Yeah, but why??? Say "Clear prop" and then half a sec later start, really gives ppl a chance to move... or not (and if your inside a plane ppl wont hear it anyway). So stupid. Here in Sweden we look first and take responsibility that its safe and then start. Takes a few more braincells but its worth it.
This has been by far one of my favorite projects on UA-cam...I’m not a aviation fan but you have made it feel like we were there with you through it all! Ready to see what’s to come!!

Same here... never heard of this guy until part 1 of this series showed up, and I've been catching this as it goes. The other engine really didn't seem to want to run. But as soon as I saw the compression numbers today on the formerly neglected engine, you knew it was ready.
It almost made me go to tears seeing that engine kick itself into life given all the hours and devotion you’ve invested into it. So I say to you Sir…. “LETS FLY!!” Flight of the Phoenix is to come 🔥🔥👏👏

Certified aircraft are completely different animals when it comes to getting back into service. You don't mess with the FAA requirements...and he HAS NO LOG BOOKS on this aircraft. Big...HUGE...problem.
Hubby and I both come from an Aviation Background and voted that the 401 should become a "Life Flight" aircraft maybe something specific for people and their families who are coping with terminal illness such as Cancer or Organ Failure so that their lives could improve. There is so much good that can come from this Phenix Project, even just helping people tick off their "Bucket List" would be amazing!
Seeing Sam's reaction really made me smile, despite not wanting to see the plane or even get into it, He still did. I can def see the camaraderie you both now share over this plane. Good work! hope to see it in the sky soon!

@@baums547 Well we werent talking about the guy taking this old girl on a secret trip while filming it on youtube. Im saying it would most likely fly with both engines running like it sits now. If everything is hooked up amd working that needs to be.
For the right motor: A bad turbo; ie, bad seals, etc will still run the engine but a seized turbo won't allow enough air in the engine. I'd really suggest to take off the turbo and try without.
Kudos to Sam for getting out there, getting in there. Touching to see him start that engine after so long. This Phoenix needs to fly. Make it so. LET'S FLY!
FYI: Aircraft engines are counted from the pilot's forward-looking point of view --- from left wing to right wing, the engine on the left wing is #1; if there's a center engine, it's #2, right wing, #3, etc., so there's no confusion about engine numbering. CONGRATS!, btw. LET's FLY!
I think the logic was "number one crappy engine that we tried to fix and failed"...and that made the "2nd" engine next on the list. I prefer starboard and port engine...but alas.
The Jimmy cameo before the engine starts is just wonderful. And the owner seems like a nice guy. When the plane is all fixed up and flying, bring it on safari to Kenya. Good job!!

I felt a guilty amount of joy when the engine turned over and started. To me it is always a shame when something we have created is left to slowly decay. To be able to bring it back to life is an amazing thing, especially after seeing all of the hard work you've put into it. It speaks to the character of the owner that he stuck to his word despite being offered cash; I like to think he just wanted to know it was running again and fulfilling its purpose. Doing my best not to binge watch these videos to get up to date and just enjoying the journey.
I feel ya. People find nature and the like beautiful, but I find stuff like this beautiful. The engineering and mechanical knowledge that went into building this, then to just sit for a decade and still be alive. That is beautiful to me.
I only discovered this a few hours ago and HAVE binge watched up to the point the owner came out - it's like a book I just can't put down = and I feel the joy too - all the way from Scotland !

@Rebuild Rescue Love the series! High Five and Major Congratulations!!! You've probably already thought of this and may be already planning to do something like this, but it would be an even more amazing story if you could figure a way for Sam to receive some funds from this project, whether from merch sales, viewer donations, % of sale proceeds if it's sold, whatever... if that's even feasible. I understand you're the one putting in the blood, sweat, tears and $'s, so it's totally fair if you can't, but it would just kind of break my heart for an honorable person of good character like Sam not to benefit somehow from the project. What a unique individual these days.
Even though the left engine runs now, I would check the compression ratios again to see if they've leveled out. That much discrepancy between cylinders means something is not right. Maybe some have valves that aren't sealing quite right or others have something stuck in them, but it needs to be addressed.
@@cdurkinz Exactly. This thing won't touch the sky until both of those motors have had full tear downs and rebuilds. Who knows if even the blocks are still salvageable.
They just needed to get an engine started so they could get full ownership before tearing into them. Even the engine that ran only had one of the two mags operational. Neither engine has a turbo that can even spin.
why not, but i see 2 main problems there 1 making the engines run at factory standard speeds will not be that easy, 2 frame peobably hassome micro cracks and getting flying permission withthat probably will cost alot, other systams can be fixed with lots of effort.

@@DrDeepstack Again, even if that were the case... It holds no bearing on whether this aircraft will be flown again...
Do you not understand how a youtube channel operates...
@@DrDeepstack Who’s the Crazy one here, You for not believing after a bit of tough loving that’ll it’ll potentially fly again.
You celebrate, we celebrate.
That was awesome getting the "Clear Prop" from Jimmy! As a pilot myself I could see and hear the angst from the owner, I can only imagine how it must have felt to watch something you used to enjoy sitting and wasting away. However, you could tell he was happy it was going to someone who he figures will restore it and enjoy it.
Seeing that engine come to life strangly made me emotional. I hate when old things get thrown out and it makes me so happy to see that old bird run.
Thank you for the passion you bring to the channel Brother, we are glad to have you apart of the Rescue Family
It brought a huge smile to my face when that engine roared back to life. That plane needs to be back in the air. Let’s fly! (And Phoenix sounds like one hell of a good name)
i'm pretty sure everyone became very happy when it started 😄
Nothing brings on the anticipation like having Jimmy say "Can I get a clear prop"! That was awesome!
Remember the saying: "buy the engines, get the aircraft for free!"
That being said, there is something magical about bringing an old bird like this back to life. I'll be looking forward to seeing continued progress on this in the coming months.
Was thinking the same myself....can't wait to see the parts that need certification to get the necessary paperwork...hope we get to see the full restoration back to flying standard...👍👍👍
You are right. You can restore a classic, buy a classic ready to go or even something new but it’s what you want to do and where your passion lays.
@@gcarless9578 The thing that gives me even the smallest inkling of hope that this thing will ever fly again... The fact that it is growing, and will continue to grow, his UA-cam channel... That's what makes me think there's some small hope for this old bird. If he can get a UA-cam channel up and running into a full business that pays his bills, and then some, off of the restoration of this airplane? I'm thinking that the cost, however much it might be, will end up being well worth it to him to invest in.
I'm sure he could buy a clean, flying example for likely much less than it'd take this thing to be airworthy again. This old pile of trash can do something that the well maintained pristine one cannot though... This one can alter his career path and his life's trajectory quite dramatically!
Edit: One might even say that this fine plane has the potential to... *"elevate"* his circumstances quite substantially. Eh? Eh? Ok... I'm leaving now...
I don't know if anyone else can feel what the previous owner feels but I'm sure he had so many great memories with it. Its got to be hard to see it go a little. great job getting it going!!!
Let's fly!!!!! I definitely wanna see you taking the old owner for a ride in that baby!!!

@@FromSagansStardust Thanks, that's what I thought.
I'm more than a little late to the party, but I need you to know that I had the biggest smile on my face when the engine started up, especially when the old owner came out to crank her up. Thank you so much for sharing this journey with us.
Hell yeah, let's fly! Awesome to see Jimmy give a "Clear Prop!" Great smile on the old owners face. Can't wait for a 310 401 flight soon!
I'll tell ya, i've never been more excited for a restoration, especially the interior. Please keep up the good work. LET'S FLY!
Pulling in Jimmy was epic! He's one of my favorite plane restorers! Nice work in getting it running. Great series man.
This plane may have been given to you for free , but the hours and money spent on parts and labor must be in the thousands of dollars ! So more or less this has been a project of love of the plane ! Complete And Total Thumbs Up ! And Congratulations ! I Salute You for putting what was once a total mess into a work of art ! And I thank you for the time and effort YOU put into it !
Just out of curiosity how much money did it cost in parts
I wouldn't have thought I'd be 1000% invested in watching someone restore a plane I've never seen or probably will see. However, now I'm literally cheering for you to get that plane up in the air! GO get that sucka in the air!!!
Good to hear you Jimmy. "Clear prop" 1 engine to go... Let's fly!
Getting the engines running is one thing. To get it to fly again is a completely other story.. But it's a start.
@@mrsonor1090 Stupid?? Well, yeah. Have you not been watching UA-cam for long?

I was watching it when he first start as well
Like many others, I've been following this from the start. And when that engine fired, I got a little emotional. What a journey! Looking forward to seeing how far this thing can go. Let's fly, Phoenix, fly!
“LETS FLY!!” Flight of the Phoenix is to come 🔥🔥👏👏
I thought to myself..."oh shit"....this stuff is going to continue. He is NOT making a logical or smart decision to "restore" this plane.
Let’s fly! I Would love to see a full restoration, especially the interior!

I actually thought the same thing a couple videos ago.
Seeing Sam's reaction really made me smile, despite not wanting to see the plane or even get into it, He still did. I can def see the camaraderie you both now share over this plane. Good work! hope to see it in the sky soon!

Almost got a tear in my eye, I cannot believe how invested I have become in your story with this aircraft. Let's fly Sir.
you do know this is as legitimate as the tv show Airplane Repo, right? This isn't some guy trying to restore an airplane for the love of flying. his whole existence is about clicks and show business.
There's nothing better than hearing an engine start after you've been wrenching on it for a long time! Let's fly! Can't wait to see what the future holds for it.
Unless the plane is restored on every inch. It will never fly.
LOL...ROFL...HAHAHAHAHA....you don't know much about aircraft...I'm guessing.

The FAA. Will never allow that hulk fly with out a complete overhaul. Period.
@@TheMilwaukieDan I reckon you'd be right. This plane has no maintenance history, example overhaul engine after x hours. Question is how many hours has it been s9nce the last oveehaul and how many to go to the next?

I am glad you are enjoying the series Dimitris
I"M REALLY looking forward to see the interior being clean.
Likewise, but yeah, it's a gut job more than a cleaning job. Just the same, I'd like to see all the bird flu gunk go away so it's not a potentially lethal HAZMAT risk every time he needs to enter the plane.
I didn’t catch it. Did the turbos free up ? In your last video, the right engine almost caught - a couple of times. Might check mag timing. Or fuel flow .
I had no idea of how an airplane engine looked like I was just scrolling and saw your video, I am amazed about the set up of it, I got hooked watching how detailed and determined you are in trying to start that engine, it like i am there with you every step of the way, I am enjoying every moment, i believe the engine will start now!!! I am so excited!!!
Getting an old, abandoned plane to run is a tremendous happening, but enabling it to fly would be truly spectacular.
fly or fly safely? I think it would fly with just the 2nd engine running. It might be sketchy as hell but get the parts moving and someone brave enough, it will fly!! I just hope he goes through it with the right people to get it done safely and flying right!
@@warrenmichael918 You can't just take off without getting this thing certified first. This isn't a car and the FAA doesn't mess around.
@@baums547 yes and no, depends on the airport he is at. I think the one he is at has people that would not allow it but the small airport we have in town doesnt even have a tower really. I know he could just fire it up and take right on off here! Im not a pilot so im not sure how it works with transponders and such but flying it and flying it safely are 2 different things. Not to mention all the little planes that take off and land on their little private airstrips that dont need permission.

Make it so. LET'S FLY!
What a nice guy the original owner is. So pleased for all concerned
Super Kudos to Sam.
The epitome of ‘passing it on’ to the next generation. 🤗
Kudos to you for ‘getting it done!’
LET's FLY!
That caught me right away too….
Congratulations buddy now onwards and upwards 👍
Which way are the engines numbered, on the English Electric Lightning?
I think the logic was "number one crappy engine that we tried to fix and failed"...and that made the "2nd" engine next on the list. I prefer starboard and port engine...but alas.
Let's fly !
The Jimmy cameo before the engine starts is just wonderful. And the owner seems like a nice guy. When the plane is all fixed up and flying, bring it on safari to Kenya. Good job!!

When money doesn't buy your word, your word has true value. Awesome stuff, respect to the owner and to you getting this running again.
Thank you for being here with us on this journey Andrew 👍🏼

@Rebuild Rescue Love the series! High Five and Major Congratulations!!! You've probably already thought of this and may be already planning to do something like this, but it would be an even more amazing story if you could figure a way for Sam to receive some funds from this project, whether from merch sales, viewer donations, % of sale proceeds if it's sold, whatever... if that's even feasible. I understand you're the one putting in the blood, sweat, tears and $'s, so it's totally fair if you can't, but it would just kind of break my heart for an honorable person of good character like Sam not to benefit somehow from the project. Even though the left engine runs now, I would check the compression ratios again to see if they've leveled out. That much discrepancy between cylinders means something is not right. Maybe some have valves that aren't sealing quite right or others have something stuck in them, but it needs to be addressed.
Lets be honest both of those engines need to be completely rebuilt before this thing ever flies.

Pretty cool of the owner to keep his word. His word and honor is worth more than that $20k offer.
It was definitely a fake offer. There's probably less than $1,500 in scrap in that plane. The plane is in the right hands now.
@@jeremysales1232 Could be a real offer. You should see what some people will pay for totaled vehicles.. With the absolute best case scenario of breaking even just on parts costs, ignoring labor.
