@rz Poor as in their incomes do not cover their vital needs. This is in comparison to the federal poverty line guidelines set by the US federal government, which uses annualized income to determine eligibility for government assistance for US citizens (undocumented immigrants are ineligible for welfare/gov't aid). So, if undocumented immigrants aren't poor in their home countries I'm sure coming here is a serious culture shock. Because upward mobility is a serious challenge for undocumented immigrants; they do not attain higher incomes the longer they work and live in the USA. As for housing, they often live in illegal unsafe tenements with several generations under one roof. This proved to be deadly twice in recent years, first during the covid lockdown. In NYC, neighborhoods with the highest concentration of undocumented citizens were hit hardest as the conditions in these communities help to easily spread the virus quickly. Then again in 2021, Hurricane Ida killed several undocumented immigrants who were living in illegal basement apartments. As more undocumented immigrants keep coming, these conditions will get worse and unsustainable.

They are coming because they think that they will be able to make money in which case they need to get in line with everyone else that wants to come. Honestly, US got one of the lowest unemployment numbers in the world, lower than France, Finland or even Germany, and the same as Norway or Australia. The problem is not enough work. The problem is not enough low-skilled jobs. I'm pro-immigration and I don't blame them for coming, I would do the same had I been born in Latin America...but 80% of Mexican immigrants have either high school diploma or not even that. Only 6% has bachelor degree and higher (both claims are from Pew Research Centre Survey in 2016). If there is a country where you can become a millionaire without college it is the US, but if millions of millions of uneducated people that don't even speak English come through the border what do you expect them to do except cleaning your pool or working in Mexican restaurant? This is not to shame them...but...yeah...that's the reality. Look at Indian immigrants or even African immigrants especially from Nigeria. They come here either after getting university diploma or complete it right here and then take high paying high skill jobs, you don't see them begging on the street. There's only so much low-skilled jobs the US can offer and over 2 million people in 2 years...that's fucking nuts, considering the fact that even low-income Americans exist + the inflation forced even more people to have a second job. And you know who's to blame for this chaos...

Now they are in MULTIPLE areas all over the city. They are burdening the shelter system and it will cost millions of dollars to house, feed, provide health services and education for their children in the long run.

I experience this first hand. I live on Queens Blvd and take the 7 on 69th street everyday. There are literally thousands of people fighting for a few cars who are exploiting them for low pay for contractor/ moving work. I mean who are they to blame though for their situation? They chose to come here illegally and know not only are they living a safer life but they know the consequences of their choices. If they were expecting everything to be sunshine and rainbows they have another thing coming. Especially with how Covid effected us in the long run even people who are legally employed may not have a job tomorrow. I may have a steady job but I pay tens of thousands in taxes every year(which they don’t) and the govt doesn’t give me anything for my food and rent and for sure didn’t find me a job when I didn’t have one. There are vets who don’t even have homes or jobs. VETS WHO HAVE BEEN LIVING HERE THEIR WHOLE LIFE. My family is American, counting back into the 1700s. I worked for a Bachelors Degree and a Masters Degree loan free. Because I knew it wasn't likely for me to find jobs that compensated me fairly, promote me based on merit, pay fully for "benefits" or keep more than select employees for over 1-2 years. As a matter of fact it is this turnover of staff in the pursuit of cheap labor that generates waves of immigrants and offshore workers, skilled and unskilled. I, for over 40 years, have not been able to live the American dream in the workplace. Right up until yesterday I struggle with workplace nightmares. The housing market is crashing, many of us "Middle Class" homeowners will be met with astronomical taxes because of the manufactured high housing prices, inability to move because of rising interest rates. We live on American dream streets and have not been able to wake up to balanced government budgets or regulated private industries that our tax payer dollars pay feed.
