  • HB receives his neighbours 1956 Vintage Omega Seamaster automatic Swiss watch for a service restoration. The watch was a total non-runner and needed to be brought back to life. Omega Cal 501 with the reference 2846-7SC
    This watch originally belonged to my neighbours late father and hasn't run in years. Locked away not seeing the light of day and forgotten about. Let's bring this back to its original glory so it can be enjoyed for many years to come.

    Old Omega's are definately among my favourite vintage watches! Also, proper lubrication is good advice in life in general.

      Me too. Usually a joy to work on. I really love that rose gold colouring they used for them as well. Timeless.

    What a stunner. The cream and gold screams an gleams yo. That dial is minty and i would stare at it all day. "Do not operate heavy machinery while wearing this watch". Great video as always!

    Would love to see the process of removing the radium from an old large number watch and reluming... although it might not be something you want to get into! another great video.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  3 місяці тому +1

      hah you won't see that with me. I would never remove radium from a dial. The most I have done is remove radium from hands under water so the dust does not fly and that was outside. The process would be exactly the same and some people really don't get hung up on it or don't care. Maybe I am to pedantic about it but I'm not taking chances.
      Tritium is different as the half life has well and truly past so no longer radioactive. Saying that though I still remove it with care.

    I just purchased a stainless semaster about 2 hours ago, I don't know much about it yet except it's time only. Perhaps I'll have time to open it up this week and have a good look. But I also purchased 3 pocket watches and an early wristwatch Saturday. The 18s south bend has some keyless issues and the KW waltham has a damaged hair spring and a missing the roller jewel as well as a few simpler issues.

    ALL TAMIYA products are fantastic, however they are reasonably expensive for what you get. I use their ultra thin cement. But I found out thst their airbrush thinner is the exact same chemical formula. So now I buy a bottle of that( at much more volume) and add a wee bit of acetone at about 50/50 percent. Then you get a lot more. If you doubt me then please look up the SDS, Used to be called MSDS on the bottle of Tamiya extra thin, I promise it is not rocket science. Try it.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  3 місяці тому

      What product are you exactly comparing it to with what I used? I'm a bit confused 🫤

    I wonder whether a small laser cnc engraver might be the solution in putting the omega logo back on the centre of crystals? Also monograms etc.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  3 місяці тому

      I think it would be totally doable. It's literally just etched in on the inside. Thanks for watching 👍🏽

    Did you check for radioactivity in the movement itself after removing the dial, in case the radium paint has partially crumbled?

  • @samnova450

    Watch looks very great, Awesome work. I’m starting off as a beginner watch hobbyist, what years did radium was used in watches? I did pick up Geiger counter.

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  3 місяці тому +1

      Thanks for watching 👍🏻👍🏻 I think (don’t quote me) that they outlawed it in the late 60’s and moved over to tritium which technically is still radioactive, although the half life of tritium is around 18 years where as radium is around 1600 years.

    Was just discussing the radium with you the other day.
    I have the a 1955
    Seamaster that is almost the same watch but with beads of rice bracelet.
    What is your opinion of Alprosa watches?

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  3 місяці тому +1

      👍🏽 where was this?
      The levels were pretty low on this one as the hands were 100% tritium. The lume plots on the dial were also very small and intact so with care its ok I believe.
      The older watches are the worst where they have big numbers all caked in radium etc. Plus mostly in terrible condition now all crumbing away into dust.
      Not a massive fan with Alprosa even though it has that Enicar connection.

    Funny to think that people used to drink radium-infused water and now we know it’s extremely hazardous in even the smallest quantities. ☢️

    • @HorologyBiology
      @HorologyBiology  3 місяці тому

      Women literally used to rub it into their cheeks to give themselves a nice glow 🤗
      We all encounter radiation but it’s about the dose and of course more importantly when it comes to radium don’t ingest it (or rub on cheeks).
      Thanks for watching
