Hi Serena, I have always cared about how I look. I don’t even run to the store without makeup and getting dressed. I have always been that way. I love fashion and I appreciate all your suggestions. I still like my skinny jeans but I have a few pair of straight leg jeans and I really like those.
If skinny jeans are my best fit jeans. I wouldn’t ditch them just because they’re no longer in vogue. Skinny jeans don’t flatter my figure, and I’m happy that looser fit jeans are more in vogue now. Here in England, when skinny jeans were the rave, it was common for us to enter our favourite stores and find limited offerings in jeans that include no looser fit ones. Quite frustrating! These stores should cater to all shapes, sizes & types of women, shouldn’t they?
I like the distinction between looking relevant and current, not necessarily younger. I look forward to looking as great as your mother in law as I get older❤
Serena, I just discovered you today and can’t stop watching! You’re beautiful and an inspiration. I have the menopause middle and watching you makes me want to dress more confidently and less frumpy. You’re ideas are truly inspiring
Serena you're so beautiful, petite, adorable, you don't appear to be over weight in anyway & look so young! You're so brave for starting this channel & you inspire (me) women to try. I have been depressed & not doing very well physically for 7 years, I hope to get back to living my life once I have back surgery. You have helped me to recognize my wardrobe fo-pa's & bad habits. Thank you 😊
Yes!! High waters!! To this day, I just absolutely cannot even think about wearing high waters because when I was a teen, short pants (high waters, pedal pushers) were something that got you made fun of
Great tips..almost 46 from the Caribbean and I follow your tips..still relevant for me (also non white) your info is spot on I enjoy your Wal-Mart hauls and when I travel to US I look for items you've styled makes shopping easier than looking through all the clothes on racks just go for what's been tried and tested. Thanks for your insights.
Omg... your last point is so... on point. YES! I'm okay with the frayed hem look but I'm lucky enough to have an old singer sewing machine that hems jeans well and they look like the original gems. But just to let you know, (won't work on everything but it's a good option... two ideas for people who may not have a good seamstress around or can't sew... yes. Just cut jeans (or cords) off. You can creat a really cute fray by 1). Cutting them to the length you want, 2). Cut fringe all the way around, about three inches every 1/4 an inch or so. It takes a minute but worth it. After a couple of washes the "fringe" frays and curls on itself making the fringe look almost corded and they move in a really cute way when you walk. Two other ideas are cutting them to the correct length and adding a ribbon to the edge... Renaissance Ribbons... true brocades... to die for. Or if you crochet, crochet a cute border across the bottom... did that on one pair with s 3 weight linen denim color yarn. That can be a pretty quick and cute solution. Not in every pair you own, but it's a cute option.
Great tips Serena! I'm still in the game with style too! I totally understand that some people aren't, and that's totally fine too..as you said. 😊❤But I absolutely love fashion, makeup, hair and beauty. It's just fun! Wonderful video!😍
Thanks , the last tip was me. I have a new pair of jeans I wore yesterday. They fit great but have so much stretch in the waist that they work their way down bunching at the ankles. Obviously I need a belt to keep them up. Please do a demo on belting jeans to not look frumpy.. thank you, I learn so much from you.
Great tips and I plan to put together outfits that I'd never thought about based on your recommendations. All my skinny jeans are from Old Navy and I planned to get by there this weekend to try on some straight legs. I have a "mom pooch" and tend to wear flowy shirts with skinny jeans and boots. But, I see how changing it up a bit (different jeans) looks so much better. Thank you for the great tips.
I’m a southern Alabama girl too. My UA-cam feed was going while I was busy and this video came on. I realized that you sound just like Mary Jo from Designing Women.
You are so right about the skinny jeans, lol. I resisted for years, but now I love them. But to be honest straight and boot cut are way more flattering.
There is room in my wardrobe for all types of jeans. Skinny, straight leg, boot cut, wide leg, etc. Each of them has it’s place. I will NEVER git rid of my skinny jeans. Or my boot cut. Or my straight leg. Or my wide leg.
Very interesting.... at 80 years old, I need to hide my menopot midriff... I still love to wear comfortable sweat pants for gardening and running to the grocery store.... what to wear on top is my issue when the weather requires layering...
I have the same problem I can’t wear short tops. I’ll have to work on that. I really enjoy watching Serena. Great tips , we can still look good as we get older.
Frumps wear: mid-calf trousers and skirts, crocs, plimsols, twinsets, mille-fleur patterns, checked oversize shirts (Holzfällerhemden we call them In Germany), shift dresses, two-in-one sweater&blouse creations, nude or black! tights in chunky summer sandals, baggy tops with baggy trousers, frilly styles, and the colour beige, because it's difficult to get this shade right. LOL Love from Germany ❤️
I was so not wearing the skinnys, swore I was done with it! Of course I caved, I just put all but one pair away for when they come back! LOL I'm liking some of the new styles and the lengths! I was so impressed with all the comfortable boots I found for this fall, I hadn't felt like my shoes had been able to be current for years, but with all the suggestions I really felt I knew what to look for! Thanks for your help!
I like this content. I am building my own wardrobe by sewing my own clothes. So I don’t watch these and go buy the clothes that are showcased. But I do get inspiration and ideas of what to sew next and how to style it. Thank you! (I totally agree about regular tennis shoes totally frumping up casual styles)
Hi Serena, great post! I still think the classic dark blue, straight leg jean, looks great with a pretty knit and pearls!! Nothing fitting, to tight to look common, just classy. And wearing a great, vintage perfume as well!
Hi Serena, love this content and have to admit I’m guilty of some of the frumpy looks. I always try to hide my tummy so I’m always very conscious of showing my waist line. But I have learned from this. And I have recently bought more jeans because if your channel. Thanks! 😊
I'm 67 years old, 5'7," 250 lbs (2X). I was slim in my earlier years. Also, after 3 pregnancies, my feet went from size 9.5 to 11.5. I've always been interested in looking as good as possible, no matter my weight, and staying current! I go along with most of your ideas. I do have a couple places I feel differently. The first is shoes. Most women's shoes don't fit me, at size 11.5 and just a bit wide! 😭 I love New Balance sneakers, since I can get men's 9.5, which is 11.5 women's. And they come in wide. I liked your blue ones. I'm sure they are MUCH better quality at about $85 and will hold up way better than the $20 cheapies, and provide a lot more comfort for older feet. I have NB in white, and they look awesome with boyfriend and flared jeans (in blue, black, white, or tan color), IMO. As for jeans, I gave up completely on skinnies 2 years ago and bought flares and even wide leg jeans. I had mom jeans already. I just love them. I just need to wear a slimmer top with the wide leg jeans. It's a silhouette I wore in the 1970s and I still love it haha. It's like coming home.
Hi Serena. I just recently discovered your channel and I can’t stop watching it. You have given me so many great ideas to look stylish with outfits we even have in our closet. I also love your statements about age and style and I think you look great with everything you had shown us. Please keep on making these videos. I am a Hispanic woman in my 50’s not living in the US and still find these ideas very helpful!! Thanks!
Very good. I can't wear any shoe with a pointed toe because the pressure increases the bunion according to a podiatrist. I had noticed when removing my shoes, the bunion area was red which is the indicator.
Okay Serena my friend, lots of great advice! However…I often feel your jeans are too short and make your legs look shorter than necessary. Yes, There is a perfect length so I would challenge you to go a little longer. I’ve felt this way for quite some time of your pant length, but held my tongue because your so awesome. Sorry, today the box was opened 😅 hugs ❤
I'm glad to see other jean styles. I just can't get on board with really high waisted jeans though. Being short waisted I don't like my jeans coming to right under my bra. Lol. I find that accessorizing an outfit helps to not look frumpy. Like some jewelry and a great bag and shoes. I will be 54 in a couple weeks and I will avoid looking frumpy as long as possible. Thank you for all the work you put in to your videos!
Thank you! And I agree about high waisted jeans/pants. I am the QUEEN of short-waisted people and I have to be very careful. Some I just can't wear because they dig into my ribs and are very uncomfortable. 9" rise is good for me. 10" is about the highest I can go.
I just bought a pair of jeans yesterday which I’m afraid would fall squarely in the frump department. LOL! I cannot remember the last time I bought myself a brand new pair of jeans at regular retail price. I always buy my stuff at the thrift store. But these jeans I saw at Target yesterday just looked so special to me. They’re Universal Thread brand (which is funny in itself to me, because I always buy Levi’s, Wranglers, Calvin Klein, Miss Me, or some other higher quality jeans. So these Universal Thread, fashion moment jeans are definitely not my norm. But they’re a nice dark, thick denim, with very little stretch. I LOVE that they have a high waist, with a nice, fitted hip, and a VERY wide leg. They feel awesome on. So comfortable! But yes, since they’re wide legged, I know looking good in them might be challenging, especially since I am self conscious about my small bust, and don’t feel very comfortable in snug tops. I’m going to look like a Far Side comic! LOL! I almost got the 12 Long, thinking I would wear them with heels, but I went with the 12 short so I could wear them with comfortable shoes. After watching this video to the end, I’m glad I went with the proper fit!
I’m enjoying your videos! I always wonder if I look frumpy. I also take pride in my appearance. I agree with the oversized tops. Honestly, more like maternity tops without being called maternity.
I love you Serena. I’m 65 and love to dress stylish and you have helped me make such great choices for my age!!! I found shoes at Target similar to the d448 (is that the right letter/numbers?) for $30. Yay! Thank you for what you do. 🎉 Blessings
Proportion is off in skinny jeans when you don't wear a tunic style blouse. I happen to have thin legs & calves but apple tummy. It took me decades to determine the best silhouette for my body !
Serena, I think mid-rise jeans work best for most of us. High-waisters are so "girdly". And so unflattering for those with a short torso and big breasts. I'm fine with low-waist skinny jeans, because I'm petite.
Hi Serena, great video as always. You looked great in all the outfits you showed us, even the “frumpy” before ones, that didn’t look frumpy on you. Haha! You could wear an old sack, and not look frumpy. The second improved look did make a huge difference though. I love all the new styles of jeans, bootcut and straight leg, but on me they just don’t work. I love my skinny jeans and leggings. I look fat with bootcut jeans on, even though I’m 5’3”and weigh 112-115. I’m like you with long legs for my height, so I guess that’s why skinny jeans look best on me. You look fantastic with every style of jean. Everything looked super cute on you. Thanks Serena, always look forward to your videos. You have so many great ideas, and are very helpful.
This was such a help for me with casual shoes to wear with jeans. I’m fighting that old look!!! I too have seen the bunched up skinny jeans at the ankle with round toe flats 🥲. Love your videos ❤
I agree with the skinny jeans for the most part. But some longer tops look better with skinny jeans and booties or boots, because some jeans have too much fabric in the hips and it just makes one look baggy. I love flairs, but I like the ones that are fitted to the knee and flare out and they can balance a multitude of body issues when they fit well.
Hi Serena..Not being frumpy is my favorite kind of video. I think it is so funny when people get mad at suggestions. Why would I watch people like you if I don't want to look better. My husband always compliments me when I wear boot cut jeans. I have to admit I used to wear skinny jeans but only with long oversize tunics. I am 5'2" so I knew covering that much of my legs made me look shorter and dumpier. A lot of my friends won't even try the bootcut or straight. One thing I see all the time is capris with long tops. I don't do capris anymore unless maybe doing yard work. I so agree that shoes have come a one way. I do love your new tennis shoes from Walmart. I did keep one pair of skinnier jeans for higher boots. Thanks Serena..keep those tips coming !!! Oh love your new Spanx joggers!!!
Thank you Rita! Yes, we all need a pair of skinny jeans to tuck into tall boots. Like I said, they have a place in our closet. But there are so many more flattering options. I heard a short, somewhat overweight & apple shaped lady say that skinny jeans made her look like an ice cream cone! 🍦 😂 That's the truth!
I love Hokas! They may be my next sneakers. But I try to wear those with leggings/jogger outfits only & wear cute/casual sneakers with everything else 😊
Hi Serena. I just found you today. I’m 74 years old. I wear a size 10 jean but I am broad shouldered. I have always worn a size or two larger jacket. I want to still look stylish. I’d like to see a video that will help me look stylish. For footwear a only wear flats and nothing bulky. Please help us older ladies that want to look stylish.
I’m definitely one of those people who held out on wearing skinnies for a long time. I ended up caving because for years they were all you could find so I’m thrilled to have so many different silhouettes available now. I’ve thrown out all but a few pair to wear with tall boots. Skinnies do very few figures any favors in my opinion.
It took me years to find skinnies that looked good on my figure. My legs are slim and hips are small but I have the apple tummy. For years I was still wearing all my straight leg jeans while skinnies were more fashionable. So I am hanging onto everything that still fits. Balance & proportion are definitely key when putting an outfit together.
Hi Serena, these are all some great tips! I really loved seeing the before and after. Now I see how the skinnies make your hips look wider. I have only straight and skinny. It’s time to venture out. I do hate wearing athletic shoes with cute tops and jeans. I usually wear booties. I do try to buy the right length in jeans or fix them myself. This was a great video!
I loved the bootcut jeans on you. I would like to see more videos like this one. I think when someone wear knit or polyester pull on pants it adds major age to them.
That's generally true, however it all depends on the cut of the pants. For example, the black split hem pants y Time & Tru are a pull on knit, but they are very flattering and don't look like "old lady" pants!
It’s really easy to cut your own jeans. I do it all the time. If your off a bit...no one will ever know unless they run around with a measuring tape. lol
I am a recent subscriber and all your tutorials are so helpful and informative. I have even purchased several of your items. I recently purchased some beautiful designer riding boots in cognac that I have received compliments on and wondered if you had any previous videos on styling something like that or possibly styling outfits with cognac riding boots in the future?
Hi! Thanks for subbing. I don't have any videos on that in particular but I do have some over the knee boots in my most recent Walmart video. With cognac, I think pairing them with an all black look or all cream/white look is very rich looking & classic. Black skinny jeans, black turtleneck, black blazer & cognac boots for example.
Who doesnt like compliments?? I want both--please myself and get compliments!! What is the best length for jeans? Ive seen at the annkle, ive seen breaking across the top of the foot and ive seen an inch from the floor.
Length of jeans depends on what look you're going for. To look the tallest/leanest, go for bootcut jeans that break across the top of the foot. For summer, I like ankle length bc they show a little skin and look great with sandals.
Good morning Serena. The pink v neck textured shirt you are wearing is beautiful on you! What is the material? I am petite and slim with a size 4B in shoes. I can find my size in shoes which are vintage from the 1940s through early 1970s. A company in the UK carries my size in adult shoes. Commercial shoe makers in America start at size 6 and larger. Even Clarks does not carry my size. No clunky ugly shoes for me. J. Crew sometimes carries my size 000 petite. I would never wear capri pants, oversized anything. As for jewelry, I wear a piece or 2 of fine antique small things. I like a classic look and comfortable with my style. I am almost 74, certainly not over the hill.
I do think skinny jeans look better with certain tops that are longer length. I can't afford not to just get rid of then and not wear them sometimes. Most stores around here that is what they sell mostly.
Remember....just because stores sell it doesn't mean it's popular or it looks good! I think a lot of stores have surplus skinny jeans and they're trying to get rid of them.
Serena you did great on this video. I’ve always known that the way some women wear there clothing is very FRUMPY. I think our better fitting & stylish when they’re more fitted. That’s just the way I feel about this. I don’t like the baggy jeans at the ankle. I don’t see much of that here. I still wear skinny but I’m slowly moving in to the boot cut & wide leg. I really enjoyed your video it was very inspiring. 🎃
For those of us who have skinny jeans, they look quite nice tucked into boots. I am guilty of keeping and wearing my jeans for years because they fit me. I've always worn straight legged jeans with mid heel shoes or booties. Still have flares from the 1970s which look good. Your athletic shoes match your jeans. Nice look for a walk outside. It really does not look awful. I like the tan sweater because it is not too long and fits. The white ones look very nice as well. I wear my athletic shoes until the tread wears off. New Balance for the treadmill. Shape ups for outside.
The first straight jeans from Old Navy may make the outfit more balanced…but the pattern/colors of the denim at the abdomen and the very pronounced zipper direct all the attention to the tummy. And that’s never good in my book. I don’t think they are flattering.
Serena, I love your videos, such good advice. I have a problem with my jeans riding down, doesn't seem to matter if the are high waist, or mid waist, skinny or bootcut, etc. I don't like belts because they are so bulkie (?) . Any advice to help me.
I would add that since I don’t work for Chicos anymore it’s a little too pricey, so I love your recommendations. I am now a kindergarten teacher at 55 and trying to look and feel less frumpy. Not allowed to wear jeans, need to be comfortable, but I also live in South Florida so that’s a tough combination!
So many truths! If you don't like the look of a raw hem and don't want to take the time or money to have jeans hemmed by a professional, there is something called hem tape. You fold the jeans up to the appropriate length and use an iron to adhere double-sided tape to the wrong sides of the fabric and create a hem.
@@StylewithSerena Sure! Just make sure to wash the jeans first so they don't shrink around it and take up at least 1 & 1/4" as hemming tape is usually 1" wide.

That's probably the nicest comment I've ever received! Thank you!
Love to tune in to all your videos! I’m showing my age but we called “ankle flares” HIGH WATERS! Hahaha
Guess I missed out on that era!
Yo!! Where's the flood!? 😀🤣🤣
Paddle pushers
And we called them “Pedal Pushers”
Yes!! High waters!! To this day, I just absolutely cannot even think about wearing high waters because when I was a teen, short pants (high waters, pedal pushers) were something that got you made fun of
So glad to have found you. I recently lost 65 pounds. I'm getting ready to put together my warm weather wardrobe. Your ideas will be greatly helpful.
Wonderful!

But why the need to cover the butt and/or legs anyway? Don’t hide those things! Embrace them! Fuller hips/butt/thighs are incredibly feminine!
Another great video, Serena! Thank you for modeling all the different types of jeans and pointing out the benefits of the different styles.
You're so welcome!

Your advice is good. Give it and don’t apologize. If people want to look frumpy then they don’t need to watch your videos.
I’m a southern Alabama girl too. My UA-cam feed was going while I was busy and this video came on. I realized that you sound just like Mary Jo from Designing Women.
Oh I used to love that show!
You are so right about the skinny jeans, lol. I resisted for years, but now I love them. But to be honest straight and boot cut are way more flattering.
I could not agree more about the athletic shoes with Street clothes.
I still wear skinny straight and boot cut but I just don't like the crop jeans. I feel like my britches are too short. 😆. Great advice! Great video!
There is room in my wardrobe for all types of jeans. Skinny, straight leg, boot cut, wide leg, etc. Each of them has it’s place. I will NEVER git rid of my skinny jeans. Or my boot cut. Or my straight leg. Or my wide leg.
I didn't know what frumpy meant until I started watching your video. Thank you for all the great advice 😊

That was fun. Your tip on proportioning tops and bottoms to show the figure is great.

Like your tips about trouser jeans! A great look for my casual office.🎉

High water pants just look like they shrunk. Add a flare bottom and it just looks ridiculous. I love flares, but not high waters.
I love these kind of styling videos. Thank you!

I just saw a UA-cam channel where it shows older women wearing lots of color and prints and looking fabulous
Cool
Very good. I can't wear any shoe with a pointed toe because the pressure increases the bunion according to a podiatrist. I had noticed when removing my shoes, the bunion area was red which is the indicator.

Thank you for all of the tips! I am 68 years old and seriously need to dump the frump!!!!!
You are so welcome!

Which jeans are too short? The ankle flares are meant to be short/ankle length.
I just found you and I love your advice and videos. I’m excited to go back to boot cut jeans
Thank you Serena, enjoyed the info on the ways to not look frumpy!
Glad it was helpful!
Got a lot out of this, thank you! Especially like the sneaker info, need to get a pair of white ones!

I love the first look.
I like your tips on the shoes and pants/jeans.
After watching this video to the end, I’m glad I went with the proper fit!
that color is gorgeous on you!
I love looking stylish and you're a great help. Enjoy your videos!
Yay! Thank you!
Iron on hem tape works great, too.
I just love your tips and I’m happy to say even at 76 I am pretty up to date- I do like that slightly bunched up look at my jean hem though lol
I’m enjoying your videos! I always wonder if I look frumpy. I also take pride in my appearance. I agree with the oversized tops. Honestly, more like maternity tops without being called maternity.
That's exactly what they're like!
Serena, you have a absolutely beautiful complexion! Give us some tips on your skin care! You are gorgeous!
Love bootcut!
I have to layer up to walk my dog. Not long ago it was minus temp
Thank you so much for the tips. I guess I need a whole new wardrobe! 🤣
Me too 😊
I love you Serena. I’m 65 and love to dress stylish and you have helped me make such great choices for my age!!! I found shoes at Target similar to the d448 (is that the right letter/numbers?) for $30. Yay! Thank you for what you do. 🎉 Blessings
Wonderful!
Thank you Serena! I love your tips☺
You are so beautiful and I love all your informative information. Keep on looking beautiful
Enjoy all your tips
Proportion is off in skinny jeans when you don't wear a tunic style blouse. I happen to have thin legs & calves but apple tummy. It took me decades to determine the best silhouette for my body !
Tunic over skinny jeans is a dated look. Skinny jeans aren't a modern Jean silhouette. Try a straight or slim straight leg.
I love your channel and couldn’t agree more with all your helpful tips!
Great thoughts! I’m with you on skinny jeans and only have one pair of leggings.
Serena, I think mid-rise jeans work best for most of us. High-waisters are so "girdly". And so unflattering for those with a short torso and big breasts. I'm fine with low-waist skinny jeans, because I'm petite.
Absolutely!
I'f you're 5'3" and weight 112-115 there's no way you could look "fat" in anything!
This was such a help for me with casual shoes to wear with jeans. I’m fighting that old look!!! I too have seen the bunched up skinny jeans at the ankle with round toe flats 🥲. Love your videos ❤
You are so welcome!
I always enjoy listening I find your fashion very interesting
Oh thank you!
You're welcome
I agree with the skinny jeans for the most part. But some longer tops look better with skinny jeans and booties or boots, because some jeans have too much fabric in the hips and it just makes one look baggy. I love flairs, but I like the ones that are fitted to the knee and flare out and they can balance a multitude of body issues when they fit well.
Really enjoy watching your videos Serena full of helpful tips
I'm so glad!
@@StylewithSerena I am short but atleast hourglass shape which helps a lot with the new style jeans.
Thank you Serena...great ideas!!!So helpful!!!Xxx
Thanks, Serena! I needed confirmation that my Hokas look frumpy …Ive felt it every time I’ve worn them lately lol🤦🏼♀️
I love Hokas! They may be my next sneakers. But I try to wear those with leggings/jogger outfits only & wear cute/casual sneakers with everything else 😊
Love all these cute ideas 💕
I like the longer boot cut jeans on you best ❤
Hi. Great tips. Very true and helpful.☺☺
Love those pants! A great bargain❤
I have my straight leg jeans. Glad the skinny Jean look is over. I am from Anniston, Alabama
Hi from Madison, AL! 👋
It’s really easy to cut your own jeans. I do it all the time. If your off a bit...no one will ever know unless they run around with a measuring tape. lol
Right!
Great video serena!
I love my white sneakers
It's polyester
Thanks Melba!
My tip is #1 Way to dump the frump is to SMILE 😊
It costs nothing to make eye contact, smile and have good posture!
I'm liking the darker, bootcut jeans again. Goodbye skinnys.
Youre awesome!!! Love your channel😊
Very good info Serena!
I don't wear jeans for walking outside. I wear leggings or joggers with athletic shoes. They don't go with jeans, regardless of color.
You always look great! Good tips, i agree with all
The first straight jeans from Old Navy may make the outfit more balanced…but the pattern/colors of the denim at the abdomen and the very pronounced zipper direct all the attention to the tummy. And that’s never good in my book. I don’t think they are flattering.
Thanks for watching!
Serena, I love your videos, such good advice. I have a problem with my jeans riding down, doesn't seem to matter if the are high waist, or mid waist, skinny or bootcut, etc. I don't like belts because they are so bulkie (?) . Any advice to help me.
It sounds like you're wearing the wrong size. Probably need to size down.
Great stuff!! You remind me of Sher on Chicos. Similar slim secrets.
Love what you are doing thank you. Do you have any comfortable bra suggestions

So many truths! If you don't like the look of a raw hem and don't want to take the time or money to have jeans hemmed by a professional, there is something called hem tape. You fold the jeans up to the appropriate length and use an iron to adhere double-sided tape to the wrong sides of the fabric and create a hem.
I've used that on lighter fabrics but didn't know how it held up on denim. Does it work?
@@StylewithSerena Sure! Just make sure to wash the jeans first so they don't shrink around it and take up at least 1 & 1/4" as hemming tape is usually 1" wide.
Your videos are right on!!!
