Mist of these chassis are indestructible , if you keep them from rust and maintain them. These were the newest Mercedes models, when I was a child, and loving cars since I was a kid, they have a special place in my hearth.
I've still got a 1989 W124 300ce . Hopefully it lasts for many more years to come its a great car. Not as fast or as many gadgets as a modern car (not even a cupholder) but I when I see newer Mercedes on the road I feel like my car has more character and more style. It comes from an era when the 3 pointed star on the bonnet differentiated it from other vehicles on the road in a way which I don't think it does anymore. Respect to you fellow Bruno Sacco fans!
I too am a happy owner of a 300CE from 1990 .. fantastic car, it gave me and still gives me so many satisfactions. It is incredible to think that it is a car that is almost 30 years old, and is as comfortable as a few cars even of the most modern ones. They are really cars of another age, in which they were built in another way and with another mentality.

Yep perhaps it's been an unhealthy fascination restomodding my '87 300D Turbo, but seeing as it's been the quickest, most comfortable and reliable car I've had for 7 years now (getting 30+ mpg when not smoking Priuses), I'd say the effort has been well deserved. Just turned 263k mi today, planning to see a lot more.
These were all new when I was a child, and as i love cars since I was a little kid, and Bulgaria was, had just gotten out of the soviet silver wall, imagine how these cars looked compared to the Russian Lada, Moskvich, and the other eastern European cars. I love these cars.
Or a Yugo. At least the Lada is a 4 door sedan. My dad back in 2005 had a 1994 Yugo. I rememember asking him back then if we could buy a W126 Mercedes, it was a great looking, 280SE model. But the car was to expensive for my country's standard.
1985-built W124 300E here.. Sorry but I cherish it even more than the 5 speed '87 535i I used to own. 🙈 Although I do miss that thing dearly, the Benz is just a spaceship in comparison when it comes to execution and refinement. The 535i is more of a raw machine with nice interior, while the 300E literally transcends what you'd expect from something that on paper merely posseses an inline 6 cylinder gas engine and a 4 speed automatic transmission. Exhilarating to drive at higher speeds due to its gearing, handling, and extremely smooth power delivery.. all in such an amazingly aerodynamic body--0.31 drag coefficient--really contributes to the absence of sound in the cabin.. It's just unlike anything else. Both amazing cars though!!
190 W201 = C-class sedan W124 sedan = E-class sedan S124 T-model = E-class estate W126 SEL = S-class sedan C126 SEC = S-class coupe R107 SL = SL roadster The entire Mercedes line-up 33 years ago, that's it.

You probably don't get many of these versions in the USA. PS I acquired an S Class being a fan of Dallas (Larry Hagman drove one) & Bobby Ewing the 280 SL (2 Seater Sports) in the late 80's and claimed at the time to be the safest car in the World. Having a young family I sold my Rolls Royce Silver Shadow and ordered one, well worth the wait, upgraded to 420SE All Aluminium Engine V8 when introduced. Lovely car but a bit on the thirsty side at 25mpg.*

A five-sixty was a 5, 6 Liter engine ... and they al had a oil pressure indicator ... not as nowadays. I drive a ´92 300 CE with 200.000 km, it drives almost as well as a demonstration car ... Those were still real cars made in Western Germany :-)

Amazing torque on tap and with 7 speed gearbox rarely exceed 2000 RPM. I tried a Petrol Version of the B200 before placing order and when put foot down nothing happened, the agent said 'Change Down' - still nothing, Change down again and revving at 4000 rpm showed some acceleration, compare that to a Diesel with instant 'Grunt' - Use one of mine (W245 B200 CDi) for towing a 1¼ Ton Caravan and it's great.*
I know. They also didn't mention that you could get the w126 in short or long wheelbase for each engine. They didn't even mention a short wheelbase for the w126. I've got a 380se and yeah it's a little too small inside. There's not enough rear legroom for me to sit behind myself. But man is it comfortable to drive.
@ 1:57 - SL = *Sport* Light, not Super Light. Pity about the US uglification via headlamps and extended bumpers. Likewise, the poor fuel consumption and loss of power thanks to US emissions regulations. I have a Euro-tune 500 SEC that gives considerably more power than a US-tune 560 yet with lower fuel consumption than a 300. I've owned 1955 W180 220a, 1964 W111 220S, 1965 W112 300SE coupé, 1970 W108 280SE, 1974 and 1980 W116 280SE, 1983 C126 500SEC, 1988 W124 300E, 1990 W201 1.8, 1992 W201 2.0, 1992 W140 320SE. Many of those exceeded half a million kilometres - my W108 280 SE achieved 580K km before needing a new head gasket and fuel pump; was otherwise trouble free. Das Beste oder Nichts!

It's a shame the U.S didn't get the 0305 transit bus. They're very nice also. The closest it got was the MAN SL40-102 Americana, with a lot of common driveline components including engine block.

It's a surprise to me the lineup was so limited. Far less engines than MB sold in Europe. The four cylinder diesels , the 500 SEL and the smaller SLs are missing. And a few others. My second car is a 1990 W 126 300 SE. My mother drives a 190 E 2.6 and my brother owns a C107 380 SLC for sunny days.

In recent years as they have been downsizing their engines to meet emission standards, M-B stuck have with the old badging numbers. The result is downsized models with the 63 badging that originally referred to the magnificent 6.3L V8 that powered their legendary 600-series sedans and limos. Am I the only one who finds this distasteful?

I started off with a W115 manual, then W201, followed by W202 and presently I have a W204. Love them all!

In June 2019, I hailed a taxi in Berlin. It was a 190D (Heckflosse) 1964. The taxi driver was 81 yo. His last month of working, he said.

I have 2 W124 diesel engine cars. 1987 + 1995. Both are work horse street tanks!!, not race cars, but long-distance, heavy cruisers.

They never mentioned the 300SEL with the inline 6 cylinder engine. Or the 300SE? WTH? They mention the 300SDL but not the gas 300SEL or 300SE.

i owned a 88 260e and a 87 300d turbo sedan both rare but that diesel hauled major butt gotta watch those cyl heads tho i had a good one never ran hot
