I'm not sure if putting 20V through a 12V device is a good idea but it sounds like there was actually a mechanical problem with the old one, since the solenoid was working.
Good idea using the drill battery. I would be nervous that the higher voltage may hurt a 12V strike. Something that may complement your toolbox is an in-line power controller by HES. If you search the web for 2005M3 SMART Pac III Original & replacement was actually Fail-Secure. New box was marked as "Non Fail-Safe" meaning Fail-Secure.

Agreed. I run 12v model trains off 9v batteries. But if i put in 18v i could break the train.
rule of thumb is generally +/-10%

Yes a security key or mushroom pins would make it harder
