Mortars in Star Wars are so cool that it's a shame they aren't shown more often. They are a staple of infantry combat so it's kinda strange how they're rarely shown in Star Wars which most ground engagements are dominated by infantry.
honestly SW has never depicted infantry combat well beyond a firefight between perhaps a squad or two in a corridor. Now I get why, our heroes getting flanked while pinned down by automatic weapons fire from positions 500 meters away while mortar shells rain down isn't very cinematic/easy to show in a single shot without zooming out really far.
This is actually pretty high tech. Figure there are two tech levels in SW: Things learned from the wreckage of the Rakata (i.e. Magic Tech) versus whatever they came up with on their own (i.e. Dark Ages). This is why droids are everywhere but paper books seem like magic, repulsorlift is everywhere but aerydynmic based flight isn't a thing, and blasters are ubiquitous but slug throwers are a novel concept. Since mortars seem like something people actually came up with on their own, that they even exist at all is pretty impressive.
Awakening of the Rebellion, a Empire at War mod. Has mortar teams set up within certain platoons and squads amongst infantry in the factions of the game. (Empire, Rebels, and Black Sun.) This mod really makes Star wars battles in this game, waaaay more realistic. If you wish to play that way. You can build an army of imperial regulars only and drown the enemies in your men's blood. Or do what most cheese players do and build nothing but AT-AT's and auto resolve a ground battle. Empire is a RTS made years and years ago. Can conquer the entire SW galaxy and fight ground and space battles controlling armies and fleets command and conquer style. Has thousands of mods. Awakening is my favorite. But thrawns revenge and Republic ar War are great ones too!
@@matthewst537 Yeah if it's 90 dollars it better go through the clone wars, imperial era and then the first order or alternatively let you do the mandalorian and sith wars from the high republic era
Props for doing your research on mortars. I am a former Morter Infantrymen and all your data on US mortars was mostly accurate. Id say bout 98% dead on. The graphic that showed ranges was wrong. But your narration over said graphic was mostly correct The 60mm max effective range is 3,490 meters and the 81 has a max effective range of 5,608 meters. Good job
If you want another bizzare mortar system, there's also the Packered Mortar Gun from Dark Forces, which was a handheld mortar launcher meant to be braced against the user's thigh instead of the ground. It also fired its shells from a bulky revolver-style magazine.
The little that I worked with grunts it was always “where the fuck are the 41’s” “ah they’re somewhere out there doing whatever it is they do.” “Huh neat”
It's a bit of a tangent. But this video reminds me of Emperor Battle for Doom and one of my favorite units in that game. A mortar unit that's was able to fire on a direct trajectory. Sense, in Star Wars, mortars are essentially slug throwers. I wonder if something similar also exists. Good times and fun videos 👍🏻👍🏻
My dad was an 81mm mortor chief during the Korean war. They actually had 4" mortors as well. He describe a fierce fight where the fire base he was in was lobbing everyone they had at tge bad guys and they of course were responding in kind. He said the sky was full of shells going both ways.
If I recall correctly, Force Unleashed series(1 or 2, I can't remember) had AT-STs armed with a massive timed detonator that acted similar to a mortar in place of the usual grenade launcher.
My theory is the AT-RT would mount the mortar either in an underslung position beneath the cannon, or the main armament would be swapped over completely, with the vehicle mounting a mortar instead of the cannon.
It's good to have local fire support though. Until you gain air superiority, the odds of getting air support from fighters/bombers is slim, the star destroyers in most cases are usually preoccupied with space battles, etc... not to mention the time it would take to request those assets, adjusting fire to location of engagement, time till splash from air and orbital support. If you remember in the genesis arc of the clone wars, they couldn't send in bombers because they were participating in other missions. Having local assets to engage more heavily structures or entrenched enemies from a distance is always a good option. Have as many possibilities to engage the enemy as possible to give you better odds of success. The problem with star wars is that we see everything from the aspect of the highest ranking and most important characters in the series. They participate in the highest priority missions and whatever assets they need they get whenever. The average clone who isn't fighting side by side with their jedi general won't always have access to those assets whenever they want.
There’s only so many guns on a ship to provide orbital bombardment and having organic indirect fire to a platoon/company level force is always a good thing
An orbital strike could also be limited by distance to friendlies. Those shipboard weapons can be rather large, mortars may be more useful when utter obliteration of an area isn't within safe for local units.
@@shawnmay8794 Except to get on the ground, you need to be dropped in. LAATs being the default troop transport could stay on station and provide fire support with their ball turrets and mass driver launchers, defeating any initial defenses before returning to their Venators to rearm. I believe mortars to be ineffective even if orbital bombardments weren't a thing. So much more *better* tech and artillery in the GAR's arsenal!
Thank you and May the Fourth be with you!🩵 After the tales of the empire, I really hope they make a Old Republic series or a movie; However, they're going to replace the sequel trilogy with the Heir of the Empire story. I'm trying to adapt DnD to play Star Wars in it, just because I don't like the SW system we already have. But I need something where I can see the prices for "things" in general in the SW universe. Where can I find it?
ngl, i think starwars factions would be steam rolled by most modern militaries because there doesn't seem to be any shrapnel or fragmentation from most star wars explosives and the armor seems to be more tailored to protecting against thermal energy
Mortars are used in huge numbers becasue they are simple, cheap, light and easily portable even by lighter units, they can be mounted on literally any platform. Also high ROF becasue it can be loaded and fired as fast as a human can pick up the light shell and drop it, which is really fast and give even the lightest units their own indirect fire and barrage ability that is invaluable. it makes ZERO sense that this low cost light weight artillery that would also be ideal for drop troops like the clone troopers where would not see heavy use in SW. it would be especially useful for Rebel and other light highly mobile units that like to move and fire a lot for harassing the enemy.
During the second world war the Japanese had a they had a small mortar they use grenades the same grenades they used There are slightly modified to be used in the small tube mortar small enough that all it takes was one man to use ❤❤❤
It's more that it isn't that writers don't know or care about them. It's not that interesting for most people to hear about a couple riflemen hiding in a foxhole while under fire from a mortar platoon 5 km away compared to a heroic charge. It's the same reason why the bad guys in star wars never seem to get more than a few machine guns or heaven's forbid, some actual howitzers with a range of more than a few 100 meters.
3:37 That is so wrong, and you've even made bits in your own videos where you explain that repulsorlifts are a lot more versatile than wheels, and That's why they aren't used very often Also that tech being 'cheaper than wheels?' Good joke
it kinda sucks but this is one of the few times star wars really suffers from the writers lack of knowledge on the real world subject, ie the range to its counterparts or what would be usable in the real field
This is probably a stupid question considering we don’t live in a galactic community like Star Trek or Star Wars, but why have physical weapons when you could simply rely on plasma weapons?
Plamsa weapons are line of sight only. Aka the bolt travels straight and only straight. Munitions can arc over stuff, like say cover, to get enemy you cannot see. Also you can guide the munitions so you can loop it around. Plus you can vary the payload as mention in video. From High Explosive to Ion only to harmless smoke you get alot of flexibility in a simple package. And in Star wars, munitions often ignore most plamsa shields
Among the very reasons plasma based guns were used and phased out most projectile weapons, one of them is no bullet drop. Which also means no indirect fire from such systems. Hence, the majority of indirect fire weapons are projectiles in one form or another.
