    Hi Everyone,
    This Seawind 1600, Wanderlust, is actually the boat featured in Harbors Unknown and to see how well it sails and the ease of tacking and gybing, check out their episode where they have the boat sailed as part of the boat of the year contest - ua-cam.com/video/IWzN2N9Cj54/v-deo.html and their other videos sharing their experience on board!

    Great video. You covered most of the reasons I ordered one. When I asked, they sent me two sets of polars. The ones you have are Lightship and they're for the modified newer version Richard mentioned: 13.5t (instead of 13t) "100mm wider hulls" I think it's also a foot longer.) The second polars are for "Loaded weight 16t." Lightship top end is 22.5 knots, that gets lowered to about 18knots for "Loaded weight." However, all the lines of the polars as they move away from this maximum, change of wind angle and lower speeds, get closer together. So while you lose that amazing max, you keep most of the more practical speed. To keep the weight down I've spec'd most of the lighter weight carbon options. At 6 and 8 knots of wind the light/loaded lines almost superimpose - so weight seems to affect the top speeds more than the practical speeds. (When Richard said '200 nm a day', clearly he wasn't thinking 22 or 18 knots for 24 hours. 200nm/day is still terrific.)
    Thinking about the Lagoon issue, during the trial sail on Wanderlust after the show closed, I poked my head into the saloon during a tack. Not a peep. Very reassuring. I cannot wait.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  2 роки тому

      Great info - thanks for that detail and really good info for the viewers. In fact getting 200nm per 24 hours being good allows for wind variations at night and changing directions but is very realistic for good performing boats. If you are lucky and have favourable wind strength and direction all 24 hours, you can do 350 nm but this is rare.
      Nice to hear there was minimal squeaking on the Lagoon in it's tacking too. Lagoon review coming up in the near future.

    Kudos to Seawind for the 1600 😃 Quality is this Cats middle name! She’s beautiful, fast and let’s not forget it’s a Seawind 🙂 I can definitely see why you both love this catamaran. I know the build time is crazy long but it appears every new boat is projecting a build time of years! Richard did say they hope to “up” production and shave some time off the completion date. You bring another great choice like the Balance cat. I had a ride in an Aquasport open fishing boat, and my friend said he could fill water tanks under the floor if the weather got too bad. I thought that is a dumb idea before I got my sailboat with an iron swing keel. If you are stuck with cat that was too light to be stable salt water tanks could be added, and adjusted for conditions.

    • @WillN2Go1
      @WillN2Go1 2 роки тому

      I had that thought. When I asked an experienced cat sailor about storm sails and drogues, he said the biggest problem with a cat is slowing it down. Suggested I get two drogues, learn how to use them - and I presume don't lose any sleep.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  2 роки тому

      Interesting idea Rick! Certainly some of the racing performance monohulls have water ballast and pumps that can be added, moved and removed so the technology certainly exists... I suppose this whole discussion is the argument between manufacturers about what is best and (again) it all depends on what is highest on your priorities - speed (go very light and work hard at the sailing), middle weight and daggerboards (fast but more safety) and heavy (enjoy all the luxuries and get there slower)...

    Have ya'll talked much about your old Prescott Whitehaven? A "tour" video on that would be cool if you have enough pics or vids. It has a pretty sweet shape, for a homebuilt 20 years ago with those lines, I'm guessing it was cedar strip and epoxy maybe? That flared hull and swoopy coach roof is almost reminiscent of some Shuttleworth designs.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  2 роки тому +1

      Hey JC! You are right - western red cedar strips planked with West Systems epoxy sandwich, plywood +WRC bulkheads - classic style at that time. Now we see the premade hulls that you just glass together and limited fairing - SOOOO EASYYYY! Those came out about 3 or 4 years after we had started... We may do a video about the building of her although the footage we have is only still photos so really low quality compared to current day video footage. Thanks for your support!

  • @kirkb3473

    I thought we would really love this boat, but if you are over 5’6” tall you can’t even stand at the helm stations and you can’t see anything when you are sitting down, not to mention your exposed to the elements if weather gets dicey. Very respectable option though and I can see why others really like it.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  2 роки тому

      Yes, again the compromise to keep the profile low (with less windage) means that the cockpit roof is low. Standing room in the cockpit, just not in the steering position unless you lean outwards.

    • @kirkb3473
      @kirkb3473 2 роки тому +1

      @@barefootdoctorssailing8567
      Yep, I agree all boats are a series of compromises. I was thinking of the scenario where the weather is spicy enough that you need the side curtains down for protection, and you have to navigate into a harbor or anchorage with no visibility forward because you can’t see through the cockpit and saloon. It’s a great catamaran overall, but I’d pick another Leopard 50 over this if I were in your shoes. That elevated helm is such a great spot on that boat. Very interested to see what you choose!

    That was a well balanced review. Richard is right. A little weight does indeed provide security at speed and in rough seas. The Seawind 1600 is a fine boat but the wait time is too long for a new one. You want to sail now!!! As with Antares, vendors are asking a lot for them on the used market. Very recently, there was a used Seawind 1600 with an asking price of USD 1.4 million. A bit extreme.

    • @glennedwards1449
      @glennedwards1449 2 роки тому

      Not just in boats it is the law of supply and demand, you can probably buy a 2022 one at a premium of course. This is why Ferrari on their limited edition cars will not sell them to the general public as they know that people will put down the money and resell the option at a profit. Instead they approach existing customers that own multiple Ferrari's and offer to sell them one.
      With this used Seawind yes of course the price reflects the limited supply however though Seawind will sell you one at $1.1 million this is barebones and the used one probably has several hundred thousands of dollars of aftermarket equipment added to it.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  2 роки тому +1

      Oooh… yep we are seeing used boats parallel asking price to new simply because of demand!

  • @NJ-Cathie
    @NJ-Cathie 2 роки тому +3

    Love the boat except one thing: the partial roof over helm. As much as I love the sun 🌞 & my hubby recently getting something pre-cancerous removed from the top of his head I need the roof extended about 18” to fully cover the helm. Do you think just catamarans could add something to add complete protection? I was thinking add a couple solar panels on a frame on either side could look aesthetically pleasing, provide shade & fill the batteries a little faster.
    Aside from this, the boat is gorgeous.

    • @barefootdoctorssailing8567
      @barefootdoctorssailing8567  2 роки тому +4

      Yes we spent our life treating sun damage so that is why we keep harping on about too! We really want to have sun protection and this boat is half covered compared to the Outremer that is completely exposed. When we asked for drop down shades on the Leopard 50, the canvas makers did not want to put them on as they said that it would obstruct vision - obviously when we were sailing we would lift them by 90-95% of the time you are at anchor but the people that advise sailors clearly have a limited perspective.

Things like "We not done badly" (in relation to sales into the charter market), "pretty good" and "reasonable" this and "nice:" that... The Seawind 1600 (including the recent update) is a very nice boat, but doesn't have the latest thinking. Doesn't mean it's bad, but designs have evolved and improved since then.
    The smaller Seawind 1370 is a newer design and sort of copies some aspects of the Balance Catamaran designs, such as the large salon windows.

    Hi again, John & Eli. It sounds like the boats that you like (3?) have a 2 or 3 year production wait, with your best option being to buy a reasonably good second hand boat in the interim which you could relatively easily on-sell closer to a new build delivery date.
    The only risk that I foresee is the potential geo-political fallout from the current covid pandemic coinciding with a projected 2025 delivery, a 'magic date' amongst the global movers and shakers. On the other hand, as we have seen with the rise in bluewater cruising boat prices since March, 2020, commensurate with the onset of covid, a 3rd-hand vessel might be easier to sell in 3 years due to the abovementioned plandemic(sic) fallout.
