hmmm,... for Christmas time, our family is extremely traditional. We have to attend a performance of Beethoven 9th Symphony, eat o-sechi ryori (but I hate it), do cleaning, write New Year cards,.. I avoid the really unhealthy end-of-year parties.

@@towada1066 I have a conspiracy theory about Japanese New Year’s food. I think the food companies created these traditions many years ago because the food was so bad they needed to come up with an excuse for people to buy it. Because seriously, if people enjoyed this food, why don’t they eat it during other times of the year or special occasions? I’ve met so many people who hate most of the food but feel they have to eat it for “good luck” or whatever.
Why isn’t it good luck to eat something delicious? Setsubun has the right idea with the delicious ehomaki, and that even gives you good luck! Let me eat an ehomaki for new years too!
I do enjoy the first sunrise thing though. There’s a great sense of camaraderie seeing all those people out there who woke up early (or stayed up late.)

Thanks for your kind words. It was a major shock, but at least it’ll open up some more time for this. I’m optimistic about the next few days.
