Sylvaine is the solo music project of Norwegian metal multi-instrumentalist Kathrine Shepard. The project began in Oslo in 2013 and has released four albums to date. In 2019, Shepard became the first woman to earn a nomination for best metal album at the Norwegian Grammy Awards.[3] History Shepard was born in San Diego, California in the United States in 1991 to a Norwegian mother and an American father before her family moved to Oslo at a young age.[4] She is a classically trained vocalist and received a bachelor's degree in musicology from the University of Oslo.[5] The project's name Sylvaine was inspired by the word "sylvan" (meaning forest, woods) and the surname of French poet Paul Verlaine.[5] Shepard self-released her first album Silent Chamber, Noisy Heart in 2014 after writing it in Oslo from late 2012 to early 2013. She moved to Paris, France to write her second album Wistful, which was released in 2016 on the label Season of Mist.[4] Alcest bandleader Neige played the drums on Wistful.[6] Shepard met Neige after an Alcest concert in 2012 and toured with Alcest in 2014.[7] The third Sylvaine album Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone was released on 2 November 2018 and was preceded by the singles "Abeyance", "Mørklagt" and "L’Appel Du Vide". Neige also played the drums on the record.[8][9][10] Atoms Aligned, Coming Undone was nominated for a Norweign Grammy Award for best metal album, with Shepard becoming the first female musician to earn a nomination in that category.[3] In 2020, Shepard released the split EP Time Without End in collaboration with post-black metal artist Unreqvited.[11] The year before, she provided guest vocals on the song "L’île des morts" from Alcest's sixth album Spiritual Instinct.[12] Sylvaine's fourth album Nova was released in 2022.[13] Shepard is a multi-instrumentalist who can play guitar, bass, piano and synthesiser.[14] Her influences as a guitarist include Slowdive's Neil Halstead and Explosions in the Sky.[15]
Her music is beautiful. I hadn't heard of Sylvaine until I saw she was touring later this year with Eivør. Now I am really looking forward to seeing both Eivør and Sylvaine live in October.
Holy Crap.....that was so dam Beautiful. Like you, Tommy. I had never heard of them before, but this made me emotional in the best way. 10 out of 10 for sure.
Hey Tommy, it's been a while since I commented but I can't stay silent here.. Sylvaine! Such an amazing artist! This song is very folk/ballad but Kathrine also screams and has a blackgaze edge on quite a few of her songs. I've been following her project for a few years (own all her CD releases and I briefly had the pleasure to talk to her after her performance in Montreal last year.. she is so humble and nice and lovely.. man I'm fanboy-ing just remembering this moment! haha) If you want to dig deeper, I'd recommend the "live session Paris 2019" series (3 videos).. it's just great!
that was great! Her dancing was mesmerizing. hard not to feel something primal in there. how many of our oldest ancestors were mesmerized by that same dance?
This is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Her voice is magnificent! Agreed, the organ sets a beautiful base for this simple but powerful song and her dance beautifully expresses the emotions present. Notice the flare in the sky at time index 4:26. A launched flare is a signal of SOS/distress and a request for help. This gives a lot of support for how you were interpreting the song.
WOW!!! I saw it but didn't put 2 and 2 together! Thats amazing! I really did love this!

Soothing and haunting at the same time. She's Norwegian but sings in a way or an accent that is a bit difficult for us Swedes to understand. I however found an English translation, see below. [Verse 1] The last moments of day fade away The evening sun down in the west glides Shadows rising from valley to mountaintops The dark conquers all corners Being, the sun and treasure of hearts Being, be my light tonight [Verse 2] Shine over me your peace Being, the sun and treasure of hearts Guiding light that will never fade Protecting me from the grasp of darkness This star above us shines Being, be my light tonight [Verse 3] When my guiding light sinks at sea And I back into the earth shall go Guide me thru my dark tomb As I promise you my light You, who defeat the forces of obscurity Being, the light in deaths darkest night
Darn, Tommy, I wanted to request this band next month. Now I can't surprise you anymore. But maybe I still can... Kathrine Shepard is always on another level... incredible artist
@@soleywolfgangsdottir indeed. Like Eivor, Kathrine is a very eclectic artist. They play near me in October, I'm definetely considering going to the show..
Almost instant feels.. The 1st couple key changes on the organ I could feel the tears well up in my eyes and still I have no idea of what she was singing. Her voice.. that organ sound, perfect. Without knowing lyrics, I can say it felt rather sad at the beginning and more hopeful towards the end..? Anyway great choice hope the interviews go well Tommy. ❤ and ✌️ all
this is an norwegian evening psalm written by elias blix in 1891. he also wanted this to be played at his own funeral dagsens auga sloknar ut, // the last moments of day fade away, kveldsol ned i vester glader. // the evening sun down in the west glides. skuggen stig frå dal til nut, // shadows rising from valley to mountaintops, mørkret sigrar alle stader. // the dark conquers all corners. herre, hjartans sol og skatt // lord, the sun and treasure of hearts herre, ver mitt ljos i natt! lord, be my light tonight! lys du over meg din fred // shine over me your peace herre, ver mi sol og stjerna! // herre, the sun and treasure of hearts! livs-sol, som går aldri ned, // guiding light, that will never fade, meg mot mørkers hugskot verna! // protecting me from the grasp of darkness! stjerna, over huset statt! // this star above us shines! herre, ver mitt ljos i natt! // being, be my light tonight! når mi livs-sol sig i hav, // when my guiding light sinks at sea, og eg under mold skal sova, // and I back into the earth shall go, lys meg då igjennom grav! // guide me thru my dark tomb! så eg skal i ljos deg lova. // as I promise you my light. du som mørkers makter batt, // you, who defeat the forces of obscurity, herre, lys i daudens natt! //being, the light in deaths darkest night!
Coincidentally, I just discovered her a few days ago when I saw she was touring with Eivør. This song is a bit different from her usual stuff which is more like Alcest-esque Blackgaze (Mørklagt live is a good song to check out to get an idea). The sound of this particular song reminds me more of Kalandra, especially their cover of Wardruna's Helvegen which has a similar sounding organ in the background.
Beautiful song, I'm really interested in looking up the lyrics. Also, now I want to know what the rest of the album sounds like! I like your thoughts on the imagery, it did feel like a struggle and when the shawl came off her movement was free. Very nice. Stay Metal! 🤘🤘
I love Sylvaine! She’s actually my UA-cam account profile pic lol. Saw her last year here in San Diego, lovely person and her band mates as well. She does black gaze. But this new EP will be folk. Check out her Nova Album! Has some shoegaze with black metal elements

Such beautiful music. This was truly a piece of art. Loved the fact that she danced the song, as well as sang it.

If you like Sylvaine I must recommend both Myrkur and Alcest. They both do this sort of Blackgaze (Black Metal + Shoegaze) plus some folk elements
Ive done both. Love em!
