I’ve had both and I’m going back to the thermal. The ink jet gets clogged and is basically a paper weight after 6 months. The paper doesn’t stick to the skin and the stencils always come out blurry unless it’s a tiny one. Takes 5 min to print a stencil with the Epson for real. Thermal is a little tricky but once you figure out how to use it it’s the best. Take the time and make a line drawing. If you have a reference you don’t need all the shading like that, just mark out the shadows.
I've always hand stenciled up till the last year and I got a pocketjet to use. I'd have to say that it's a change in pace and I couldn't imagine going back to hand stenciling. It seems to me that a regular inkjet printer would definitely cost a lot more just on the fact that you have to buy the ink and paper
Plus after some weeks the ink of the inkjet printer will clog and the prints will start to be from defective to end clogging definitely your print head. I spent a lot with expensive inkjet inks, papers and Epson printer that gave me a lot of troubles after some time and makes your tattoo business a nightmare... Thermal never falls and lasts forever, just need to trace your design with your favorite tablet or computer, and stencil paper. I went back to my old trusty Pentax (Brother, they're the same) and it prints like a charm like always. Never would go back to the inkjet printers.
Your video is very helpful, especially the close ups of the two stencils next to each other. Since you and a lot of other videos mention the difference in durability, I would be interested in seeing the different stencils being applied to skin and then maybe wipe a few times with green soap. Also to get an idea, if those super small details from the ink jets even transfer that well. Anyways ty so much for the video!
I use stencil stiff to apply stencils to myself and fake skin and even with green soap and rubbing alcohol takes a bit to take off stencil and on fake skin takes a long time for it to come off especialy if ypu let it dry
Nicr video!! How are keeping your printer from drying out? I just tossed my epson color tank and ordered a monochrome epson but think same crap will happen again?
So, question about the Epson eco tank printer. What if you filled the black tank with black ink, then you can print a line stencil with lines you refined on procreate or whichever drawing app and run it through the thermal machine if you want. Then you filled the magenta tank with magenta ink allowing you to do a hand stencil over the print, if you want. And then fill the blue tank with inkjet stencil ink, change the colour of your digital stencil to blue on procreate before you print, which should then give you a nice purple stencil in inkjet ink giving you the best of all worlds from one printer! 🤷🏻♂Would this work?? I don't see why it shouldn't but curious before I buy!
I make sure the skin is covered over the area, I use stencil stuff, then allow the area to slightly tack, usually like 5 minutes then set the stencil.. You don't want to be able to see excess solution or the stencil will bleed.
Hey, great video. One thing I’m wondering… normally if I do a large design, say for a back piece, I normally enlarge the design on the photo copier to a set percentage, say 50% so I know all of the design is enlarged by the same amount. I then use a thermal printer and run the now several sheets of A4 paper with different sections of the design through the stencil printer. As the thermal printer you’re using is straight to the thermal printer, do you know of any way in procreate that you can enlarge to a set amount and print it off in sections? Or put more basically, how can you print off designs that you need larger than A4 on the thermal? Hope I’ve made sense Thanks Danni
I had a inkjet printer for years and never knew it could print out me a stencil…whole time I been printing the pictures regular and then use my thermal machine 🤦🏽♂️ any ideas joe to use the thermal on it ??
I think certain printers are capable of printing stencils with an inkjet printer. I don't have experience with many inkjet printers besides the one I have which is shown in this video. I have heard of people converting inkjet printers using the inkfuel but I wouldn't be able to confirm anything. I prefer to convert the image into a stencil before I print so that it can be printed via a thermal printer. I actually have a video on how I go about converting images to a printable stencil. When printing tattoo stencils from an inkjet printer we want to use the carbon stencil inks. They come in bottles and we put this stencil ink in instead of regular ink. I also used the stencil paper as well that comes with the inkjet printer or can be purchased separately. I can link you below using my affiliate links to the gear I mentioned so you can check it out on your end. Thats a great question! Yes I would say that is correct. Once we print with a thermal printer all we have to do is remove the stencil sheet from the carbon sheet and we are ready to apply. Once we print with an inkjet printer we can place it down using any stencil applicant of our choice. Both are ready to apply when printed.
Thank you for doing this video! Love how you showed the comparison between Inkjet and Thermal printers. Will need to look into getting an inkjet printer for my stencils.
Hi! I just bought this exact printer and I put in the inkjet stencil ink and for some reason it keeps printing with the ink cartridge it comes with. I can’t figure out how to have it print with the ink tank and I’ve used the same setting I see in your vid (A4, monochrome) could I get some help?
my printer dries with the same color, prints one or two pictures and dries the printer head, does the ink need to be diluted with some other liquid?i have paper for transfer to..
You can get the ink which is called Inkfuel if I am correct. I will link you below. I am a bit uncertain if this sort of ink is compatible with all inkjet printers. I think something like this would be trial and error. Pixma Inkfuel tat2skin.com/product/inkfuel-pixma-gm2040-bundle/?ref=danielyuck

Again, very informative, I've to say it comes down to personal preference, but the injet when set corretly shows all the shadings and dots clearer, but the thermal is capable if you hook it up to your laptop in some degree, using the thermal due to stencil ink shortage still gets the job done, having to use two paper with the violet carbon sucks, the inkjet can print with a single thermal paper, all in all it's up tó the person using it, another great2 content my friend 🤘🏻
You don’t need WiFi to print off the inkjets, you just connect your device directly to the printer. And to solve the issues of stencil wiping off just don’t touch the stencil on the paper and let it dry longer on skin and you won’t have that issue
Great video. Looking at the cost, it seems the good quality inkjet ink is expensive but I think if you're running a business it's pretty insignificant. How well does the inkjet stencil hold up? I feel by the time you're done with lining the fine details would be rubbed off. I have no experience with inkjet transfers so I have no idea.
I just set up my Eco Tank and dedicated it to stencil ink. I had a hard time finding any info on which paper setting to use. The best I found said to set it to glossy. Can you help, please? I printed a stencil after adjusting settings and whatnot but it didn't seem to be very saturated. It's a lot lighter on my fake skin the carbon stencils are😔
Hey! Did you ever figure out your issue? I just bought one myself and am having the same problem. Not sure how to print using the ink tank. I filled them with inkjet stencil ink but it keeps printing with the cartridges (it has both) don’t know how to select ink take
Hi there! So i have a question. Can a thermal printer make a lighter version of stencil?I mean i want a less opaque stencil. When i tattoo i cant see the black ink cause of the stencil colour being so strong...
I have seen others say this but I have never removed the yellow paper and have printed every tattoo I have ever done this way. It honestly never dawned on me to remove it, like ever haha. I am going to have to try removing the yellow paper to see what results I get as I am definitely open to doing things more efficient & effective. How are your results with your setup when removing the yellow sheet?
@@DanielYuckit is more effective to remove the yellow paper. The print is more clear. You should cut the yellow and remove the safety sheet. Print it ;) If you do it that way, it is possible to print very nice stencils. Sometimes I print realism that way and it worked. Dots are visible but very fine shadows are too dark. If you can change some settings for your printer you can set it to fine and you will see very nice stencils.
I have bought 5 Epson printers they all stop working on me.. I’m looking to buy a thermal at this point..although I love the shading that comes from inkjet.
I think the thermal printer is a solid choice, Because I see a lot of people online having to clean the ink printer over time and messing up the nozzle. #DanielYuck
Been having trouble with stencils coming out too light and barely visible with a cheaper thermal printer i got on Amazon. Although i am using cheap stencil paper too so im gonna buy spirit brand paper and see if that fixes it 👍 #DanielYuck
I’ve been wanting to get an epson for the purposes of printing a stencil with clean details and finelines, and this is a really great, comprehensive analysis of the two types of printers we use in our industry. I’ll definitely want to have one of each for the variety of work I do. Thank you! #DanielYuck
Cool to see the difference between these. Now i just need to save up the money, good old hand drawn stencils, and sore hands, until then 😂😂😂 #DanielYuck
I can understand the concept but I am not sure how I feel about something like this. Maybe if it was done in a safe lab with sterile water and appropriate bottles. haha It is hard for me to say as this is not something that I put any thought into.
i cant get the tattoo to stick on my skin ive used deodorant and water with soap wich someone suggested in a website but i cant get it to work im using the ink printer

This actually helps me out a lot. Looking to getting a printer for stencils and had no idea what to get or look into first. Getting tired of drawing stencils by hand lol. Thanks brother #GOAT #DANIELYUCK
The inkjet definitely works better than everything and for everything even the linework. And if you’re doing a full realism piece, you need to use something like the tattoo stencil app or ghost line to turn it into a stencil instead of printing the actual picture and having a purple mess.
Sorry for being such a newb. I assume for inkjet you would need to buy a special ink cartridge to print the transferable ink? I think both are pretty useful in their own ways. Kinda depends on the artist preference and the job being done. #DanielYuck ✌️♥️🪨&🧻

Yes, the same, the ink jet have a lots of problems, never worked well.
