I am Ukrainian. My country has been invaded by Russia. In this video, I will tell you what happened on the 840 day of the war.
Day 840: Jun 12
Today, there are a lot of updates from the Kharkiv direction.
The situation in Vovchansk has seen significant developments as Ukrainian forces intensified their counterattacks and recaptured even more ground. Different analyst reports indicate substantial gains by Ukrainian forces, who have managed to recapture key positions to the west and northeast of the city.
In a significant development, Ukrainian forces recently conducted their first-ever strike with fighter jets on Russian territory, targeting a Russian command center and massive ammo depot near Belgorod. The strike resulted in a large-scale fire with secondary detonations, causing fear among the local population. This attack underscores the shift in the operational landscape following the authorization by all Western partners for Ukraine to attack targets on Russian soil with Western weapons, including aviation bombs. It shows the way for Ukrainian forces to significantly damage logistic efforts to supply material to Russian forces participating in the Kharkiv offensive. This event is undoubtedly part of the shaping operations in an attempt to undermine Russian supplies and facilitate Ukrainian counter-offensive efforts. According to different Russian military analysts and also the Vovchansk City Military Administration, Ukrainian forces have recently retaken several positions within the settlement. Ukrainian officers have confirmed that most of Vovchansk remains under Ukrainian control, suggesting that recent tactical counterattacks have been successful in driving Russian forces out of central areas, with some Russian soldiers now surrounded and cut off.
Reports indicate that Ukrainian forces are increasing their efforts in the northern part of Vovchansk, attempting to eliminate the salient by recapturing territory block by block to the west. For their part, in what appears to be a desperate attempt, the Russians are still trying to attack the industrial zone around the aggregate plant located in the south, where Ukrainian forces have concentrated their primary area of force buildup. This movement puts Russian forces at an evident risk of being cut off if Ukrainian advances to the West continue at their current pace.
Recent geolocated footage shows the success of Ukrainian counterattacks. The first video shows a Russian soldier walking unarmed along a Vovchanks street to the Ukrainian side because he decided to surrender and remain alive. This soldier was most likely part of one of the groups that were cut off and surrounded. Those who did not surrender willingly were assaulted and still captured if they survived. A huge number of recently released videos show newly captured Russians along the whole contact line. Due to the sensitive nature of the footage, we can publish them only on our Telegram channel, which is accessible using the link in the description.
In general, apart from the high-rise buildings in the Citadel area in the center of the city and the industrial buildings in the southern part, both in the hands of Ukrainian forces, there are not many other areas in the city that could provide a sufficient level of fortification for Russian forces. Most of the buildings in the northern part of Russian control are residential houses on one or two floors at most. This means that Russian forces could be forced to withdraw to a position already outside the city on the northern outskirts of Vovchansk.
On the eastern side of the city, Ukrainian forces have recaptured a significant area of the settlement and continued their advance to the north. However, they have thus far advanced through urban areas. If we look at the topographic map, we can see that just next to these recaptured areas lies a high-altitude area, which may present more significant challenges for the continuation of Ukrainian advances.
German media military expert Julian Röpcke stated that Ukrainian troops recaptured new positions in the northeast of Vovchansk, while Russian troops continued to withdraw and counterattack lost areas with aircraft, missiles, and artillery. I' m probably one of the few who knew Ukrainians could win (for several personal unimportant reasons) but I knew there were certain risk that should not be taken lightly back then, not even today. Leaving aside the clear and then present danger and risk of a nuclear strike over Kyiv, Kharkiv or else, the most obvious risk was the possibility of luring precious air assets to a killing zone next to Russian borders (on those days). "Caution is the mother of wisdom". Rather than thinking what could have been done better it's important to review critically what has been done proper too... Greetings!

Russia has to have some of the stupidest military strategists on the planet.
I get, every military effort comes with some set backs and very expensive (monetarily and in terms of life) 'learning opportunities.'
But this attempted land grab by Russia is easily the biggest mistake of the last 80 years. If not more. Its very very clear that Russia is still using the same doctrine the soviets used in ww2. Overwhelming manpower. At the cost of who cares how many lives.

That's the thing, Russia has always relied on a conscripts military, the bulk of their army is not even trained by nato equivalent values. Without a trained body of professional soldiers and a pipeline to sustain them, they are limited to simple and direct actions. In addition they have been using many of their professional troops like cannon fodder wasting most of that skills and training. I believe that Russian military academy is really only for teaching political ideology and how to run a racket.

It's baffling to think about how thePutin-regime led military has been fighting Ukraine with it's hands tied behind their backs untill now - while there are still stuff that Ukraine isn't allowed to do by its allied.

You see, Russia in this war had decided to do a few things:
1. Fight a war on multiple fronts.
2. Fight an offensive war of aggression against a determined opponent who is fighting with their backs against the wall, fighting for their lives and everything they value, with nothing left to lose if they fail, who had 8 years to prepare and is given far better logistical support and intelligence and equipment.
3. They ignored the advice of "never fight uphill me boys", as one idiot once recently said. Or, "I have the high ground", as one certain wisecracking troll once warned.
4. They decided to make their entire attack plan dependent on their battleplans surviving first contact with the enemy.
5. They decided to make their entire war strategy success dependent on Ukraine doing exactly what they planned/predicted, not just for the whole war (including surrendering after 3 days, or the West collectively not mustering their resolve), but also for the Kharkiv offensive (by counting on the fact that Ukraine would not strike inside of Russia with Western weapons, and that the West would be too afraid to let them).
6. "An army marches on its stomach." Fortunately, Russia says this is not a war, so maybe they decided that lesson didn't apply in this case.
7. Their plans revolved around never assuming a worst-case scenario, as if Murphy's Law was something that only happened to other nations, and that it's not literally the entire history of Russia...
Essentially, you know all the collective lessons of war that are well-repeated and known even outside of military circles? Russia decided they knew better than everyone else. And now they go to war in golf carts, have lost ships to a country without a navy, have lost more generals and high ranking officers in the past 30 months than in the past 60 years, have lost their main source of GDP for their country (and now have to import gasoline).
Trolls seem thin on the ground. If you see one please check in and ask “how’s the russian summer 2024 offensive going?”

The only thing that has kept the Chinese from invading Siberia since the 1960s was the concern among Chinese military planners that any attack on Russian soil, even with conventional weapons, would get a nuclear response. Xi and the Chinese are watching carefully and evaluating their options. And no - I don't find that to be a good thing.
China is looking for a deal to get territory. It's a balance between their customers and what they can get.
The truth is that 90 percent of active equipment is in Ukraine. If China wants to they can actually walk on in the way that putin thought he could roll over Ukraine. I think the west is as much of a reason why they haven't as of yet atleast.
I agree, and Russia creating enemies (especially) in Europe was such a stupid move. In the longer term Chinese advances in north east Asia are inevitable. One day Russian leaders will hope that western Europeans will help them hold their empire in the east, but Europeans are sick of all the trouble, turmoil, and war that Russia brings to its neighbours.
Putin has gutted Russia so hard that China most likely won't need to invade. They'll simply buy up controlling shares of major Russian companies in the East, and any time Russia tries to object, China simply has to throttle trade for a bit to get them back in line.
Putin has sold out Russia's future.

At this point, Russia is dependent on China in so many ways, and this only increases as Russia is more and more isolated. The point will come when Russia will have no choice but to surrender territories, because they are nothing more than a vassal state to China. Case in point: when last year China released a new official map of China, and happened to draw the borders in a way that would have meant some territories from every one of the neighboring countries would belong to them, every country affected immediately loudly objected and called it provocation. Except Russia. They had no official response as far as I know.
Fortifications which require labor, trenching machines and likely land mines would be a great force multiplier for Ukraine. I assume they were not constructed near the Russian border because of the Russian artillery threat. Perhaps Ukraine can now use more advanced weapons on threatening positions in Russia and complete defensive fortifications all along the border with Russia and more easily defend Ukraine from attack with fewer first line troops.
Those Russian soldiers have had a result. They haven't been captured by Ukraine, they've been rescued

They don't want to risk losing western support, however, their volunteer units have been known to make runs into belgorod.
How can they ever defend their land if they don't liberate where the attacks come from?
I can see an argument that it's reasonable in order to secure Ukrainian territory from attack and wonder just how much Russia would like using their artillery and glide bombs on their own towns for a change.
But I doubt it and would likely be pretty contentious. Maybe brief raids over boarder for specific military objectives, but they have better tools for that can be used from Ukraine.
Sure would get Russia's attention though.
