  • World of Warcraft The War Within launches on 26th August 2024 and ther is a new allied race in the shape of the Earthen Dwarves. But as well as the half elf Arathi, it seems like there will be another playable race in the new expansion too the troll/Night Elf hybrid Harronir. The question is, WHEN willbe made playable?

Thankfully it's not some immutable thing that you need to replace to update one component of it. Can you imagine how little would have changed over the years if that were the case?

    My take I agree with Talie I don't get the people that keep going "Wow 2 we need wow2"....and I like that the discussion was on the game engine a bit, because it shows how clueless the average gamer is about the actual tech in a game. Everyone says "the game engine is crap" --- but ask that person to explain and they'll tell you they don't know what a engine really is for or what it does in a game --- without directly telling that they don't know.

    Honestly, it might be worth doing a "WOW 2" just for forgiveness on the code debt. "Making some stuff account-wide" is being billed as an expansion feature. That's how much effort it takes to make such, seemingly, small changes as that.

    I agree with the Arathi Empire being set up as future antagonists, but what if they aren't somewhere on azeroth, or at least not our azeroth? If their azeroth is in the WoD AU timeline they could be a kicking off point for cosmic war, and our new infinite buddies could be a real asset in fighting them in their own timeline.

    Are we certain it is a sustainable business model to remove the between-expansion-filler-content? S4 exists to pad out the development calendar to make the next expansion. If you remove that, you are massively accelerating the development cycle.
    Something has to give or else this whole endeavor may crash and burn.
    If they are married to 3 raids an expansion (which I think they are) and would like to avoid hosting a filler season, then something has to be dropped.
    I think the easiest call is to remove or massively curtail the size of 11.1's new zone. Focus on re-using the existing zones, spicing them up and adding lots of new content to the zones as they exist in 11.0. Either that, or you re-use a disused zone, like what Legion did with the Broken Shore.

    Most of your takes are valid Tali, but i feel like handwaving away wanting better massive-play as "all MMOs melt with big releases" misses the point that wow cant handle 40 characters on the screen at the best of times, let alone content launches. The game just cannot handle a large amount of players and spells on screen at one time. Thats the primary thing i would eant fixed in a hypothetical 'wow 2'. Things like sharding and layering have been bandaid fixes that have robbed us of any sort of massive feeling when the game starts whimpering at the notion of full raid sizes.

    I do think we need wow 2. I think we need better graphics (not a new art style - just a refresh to 2024+), and modern engine that can support deeper systems. I also dont think scrapping wow is the way to do it. I dont see why the 2 cant exist in 1 - why not design a refresh where we can bring our old characters over but that is technically a new game. Yes, it would be an insane amount of work, but the profit margins could likely support it for a MMO as popular as wow.

  • @carllaegreid

    WoW2 arguments that didn't see mentioned:
    - Microsoft would want to reimagine gameplay to be more console/controller friendly so they can add it to game pass
    - if you are going to add enough assets to the game to flesh out the other half of the planet (beyond the storming seas, Arathi empire, wherever that one green dragon flew off to) might as well rework all of the old zones to bring them up to snuff with the new ones (and how long have we been looking at Cata assets in some zones, is the sword permanent? etc) This doesn't mean, necessarily, that they would have to change the art style to something hyperrealistic, just up rez old stuff to match current
    - shore up and codify decades of lore to set the stage for the next 20 years of WoW
    - the ability to bake into the engine some amount of futureproofing to enable them to be more agile as things change (tech, retcons, etc.)
    - and maybe the biggest reason: there's no downside. WoW classic will keep pumping out expacs of past content until it's caught up, Remixes and seasons of discovery can keep WoW1 content fresh and exciting, so you can literally have your cake and eat it too and cast the widest net possible for those $ub$criptions.
    i don't know how probable WoW2 is, but I can definitely see the upside for having a clean slate to start the next 25 years of WoW.

    Do you understand that UE like engines can render the same 3d models and textures as the current wow engine? You don't automatically get realistic style by rubbing UE against WoW. They can keep using the same style, but now they will be able to use better lighting, animations, etc. It's like saying that there is no need to upgrade from BC era engine because you don't want WoW to be realistic. Well, look at Dragonflight; it's still WoW style, but higher fidelity.

    With regard to a new engine for wow, the current engine is extremely primary thread dependant so the game runs like ass when there's alot of stuff on screen (and no it's not the GPU having trouble rendering it all) FFXIV engine is alot better multi threaded so it runs way smoother in crowded areas in comparison. I.E In Valdrakken, my gpu sitting at like 50% and the fps is ass, but in FFXIV it will push my gpu to 80-90% in Limsa and nice smoothe fps (CPU Utilization also is much better rather than 1 thread capped at 100% and 3 sitting around 30-40% with wow)

    Pitch: A Warcraft ARPG in the vein of GoW, following a series of characters through the Warcraft expansions. You play as a member of a prominent faction each time. Think Assassin's Creed main characters. Events of each ARPG will take place around an area visited in WoW, but events could take place before, during, or after the expansion.
    In Legion you could play as an Illidari. Maybe play one in TBC so you can have a returning main character. Similarly play as a DK in the WotL entry and the Shadowlands entry.

    I'm really excited about the direction they seem to be going with Harronir. This potential progenitor race possesses both Elf and Troll features. Which makes both co-equal side branches, and dispels Elves being "more evolved". Instead, Elves would be expressing traits of Order through Arcane exposure. And Trolls expressing Life properties through their bargain to the Wild Gods. Likely born from Elune and Eonar's power, Harronir express both.

    I am not interested in "realistic" graphics but I am probably not alone who always wanted to play WoW that looked like the Blizzard cinematics and while UE5 is not quite there yet it's getting so so close. In 6-10 years time it could be there and most people would have computers/consoles to run those kinds of graphics. I fully agree that currently the "button mashing" games translate into MMOs so much better than games which try to be have realistic physics etc, but if anyone followed early development of WoW you probably remember how at the time WoW was being described as the single player experience but in MMO. Instead of complicated combat systems you just picked a mob and clicked attack, when they first showcased it in 2001 or so, reviewers who saw the preview were blown away how simple and intuitive it felt compared to games like Ultima Online or Everquest 1 though lot of them doubted it would be like that on release, but it was!
    Yes, Blizzard is not that company it once was, untouchable gods who can't seem to ever miss, but I would like them to try to shoot for the moon again, really try to redefine the genre again. And lastly the reason I would love "WoW 2" (or lets say another warcraft online game), is that I miss the sense of mystery. Idk if we ever can achieve it again, but I miss the times where most people had no idea what is the optimal path. Nowdays everything is datamined months ahead, guides written, everyone knows what to do and everyone follows it to not fall behind. Call me nostalgic but I miss the cloth wearing warriors. Brand new game, with brand new engine with entirely different gear mechanics and progression could maybe give us the mystery back. Maybe sometimes the cloth armor would be optimal for warrior given certain conditions. Idk, while lot of things have gotten better, I feel at the same time things becoming cookie cutter and obvious has taken away the appeal WoW once had (that classic can't recapture because people have played the game for 20 years and have figured out everything).

    33:00 Action based combat in an MMO is the worst thing ever. Just have a look at what happens in the FromSoft community with all the toxic af gatekeepers. Same thing would happen in WoW2. It is already quite bad as it is - an action based combat system would increase the problem a gazillion times.
    Action based combat simply doesn't fit MMOs at all, not one bit (and no, Black Desert combat is NOT good - it is godawfull for an MMO).
    The graphics argument doesn't fly either. Age of Conan tried something like that with high quality graphics for the time and the consequence was that the game was barely playable for most people because their PCs couldn't keep up with the requirements which severely damaged the player numbers.
    Same would happen with high fidelty graphics in a WoW 2 - only a small number of people would have the necessary hardware to run a game like that. But what is an MMO with almost no players at launch? Yep, DOA.
    Edit: Single player games in the WoW universe would be great. It's still a shame that Lord of the Clans was axed.

    Honestly.. can agree with most of this, EXCEPT the Garrosh part. Knowing Garrosh is the last boss of MoP before MoP even released did NOT help the expansion. I've played every single expansion (yes, expansion, so everything except vanilla wow), and MoP is the one I played the least (didn't even last until .1 patch) and knowing the ending that much was part of the reason. I hated knowing THAT much about the story THAT much in advance. Just made everything along the way feel meaningless.

    NOTHING AGAINST the Harrownir, but we get them before so many other long awaited races, people are gonna be pissed.
    As for the fated/awakened season, I think they're great, but they gotta be shorter. They need to be at most 3 months long, like SL. SL had 2 months + 1 month pre-patch. DF is gonna be 3 months + 1 month pre-patch. My guild was done with S4 on week 6, so... another 6 weeks before even the pre-patch feels a bit too long.

    26:39 - Tab targeting is a bit of a wonky, awkward kind of player skill. Most people wouldn’t figure that out and how to best use that to their advantage and all the best movements and addons and whatever. It’s hard to get into and just as hard to stick to, for me at least. Especially when you don’t have friends to play with all the time, if you struggle with the social aspect for one reason or another. WoW is like if D&D was an MMO video game, in a sense. It’s not quite a conventional RPG anymore, there’s hardly any RP elements, really; it’s all about the numbers. A digitized war game almost where the story doesn’t really matter in the moment. You don’t have the time to pay attention to what the characters are saying, what their motivations are, you gotta focus on your rotations. Gotta get those numbers up. With more of an action RPG mix, it could be easier to get into and stick to in theory without having to know the absolute optimal key binds for you, knowing the best addons, and overall just knowing how to alter the base game to give yourself the best advantage just to be competitive on a base level. The base game is not intuitive. That’s why I want a WoW 2. That and the art style, if you look around the game world you’ll probably notice there’s still 2007 graphics in many places that people still go to and it can be jarring if you pay the slightest bit of attention. If you go from Valdrakken to say, the human or heck, Worgen or Goblin starting zone, it’s jarring. And the spell and ability effects, don’t even get me started. We still have some ability visuals that are unchanged from when the game came out because Blizz can’t figure out a fully consistent art style. Back when it came out, the game looked a bit jank but it was consistent in style and look. Now, we’ve got fully HD 2024 air elementals wandering around in… what, 2010? Westfall. Cata era.
    Mind you, I don’t want hyper realistic graphics. What I DO want is a WoW with a consistent art style.
    27:02 - WoW is a weird combination of that and an action RPG, and it just needs to focus. But we’d need a WoW 2 to do that because the game system should be remade from the ground up. And you can still specialize and have stats in action RPGs, not everyone can use or do everything. A warrior won’t be able to cast magic for instance, and gear will matter for damage and health values if you make it that way. But the combat will be more dynamic.

    Cosmetic systems from some hybrid of DCUO's and GW2. Character customization like Champions Online/City of heroes. Combat like DCUO or GW2. Questing like Warframe's (One big story we follow allong with and small stuff, just let us figure out mission types in areas and get story and context from talking to NPCs or from drop descriptions), gearing like Warframe's/City of Heroes. Setting in Azeroth.
    IDK, thats just me spit balling off the top of my head. Honestly, so much of WoW's story side of thing feels like they want to make a single player game still too. But they are burdened with this thing that is their best seller, so they keep having to do their story telling through it.

    I don't want action combat, I just wish that it would auto-target instead of saying "I don't have a target". I wish I didn't need to make a macro for every spell just to do this. I'm a filthy casual since MOP who's only played Mage and Monk, and I've just used Remix to level up one of each class. After playing my first Bear Druid during Remix-- having a non-targeted damaging spell that also automatically targets is such amazing quality-of-life feature versus the annoying experience of playing Warrior and having to tab/click every time I entered combat.

    What would we want WoW 2 for: updated graphics (not different artistic style, people have done some great Unreal 5 WoW bits - look them up), player housing (if Blizz could do player housing with the current engine, they would have), action combat, vehicular stuff (ships, mounted combat, spaceships?!), lore reset.

    I wouldn't mind more realistic graphics, a more living and realistic looking world and all that, my computer is already dying from how wow plays NOW so that's just a stronger reason to invest in a meaner machine imo. I don't need hyper realistic btw, just not painted on gear and more customization options. There could always be more options lol. Even tho my best friend HATES dealing with character creations haha, I love it.
    also btw Guildwars 2 has a MUCH better "look" to it than wow imo. Without losing the fantasy essence they go for very realistic but also interesting creatures and playable races (not to mention their classes/proffessions) And gw2 just has an overall better sense of "MY character, MY choices, MY world" than wow does. Ofc it's not perfect, and it's probably confusing af for new players but to me their story has always been amazing and with amazing graphics to go with it. I love both games dearly but wow is way behind in the "looks department" imo. And again personal taste, but I also prefer the way you control your character in GW2 over wow. It makes things interesting and fun and it really does make you a better player as you level and learn your class and playstyle.

    Palworld kept a cartoonish style in purpose but it looks gorgeaus because it runs Unreadl Engine 5.
    I think Wow's graphics are where they need to be for the market, for the game to survive 2 decades more the direction they are taking is making other modes (Remix, Plunderstorm...) to capture new generations, and THAT will be Wow2

Make the game again, with the technology currently available, looking as good as possible, but still in the wow style, while keeping the original WOW. I don't need a new WOW, I just would like the option to maybe even pay for two WOW-s, because I tend to get bored of new content relativelly quickly, and would like to have another WOW to play during downtime in WOW content.

    I agree with Tali on the points he made, but I can see where the people who want a WoW 2 action mmo are coming from, for a time I wanted the same thing. For those people I would recommend giving Black Desert online ago. I enjoyed it but I missed playing WoW. As much as the combat was fun especially for the Wizard, Guardian, Hassassin and Sage, I found the world feeling empty. The only time I came across other players was when they were doing AFK fishing or crowded around the store house again AFK doing professions. Oh, and the occasional world boss with lagged the server to the point it was unplayable.

  • @ssjgokillo
    @ssjgokillo 3 місяці тому

    I completely agree that WoW's art style is one of it's strongest points, I completely lose interest in most mmos because of the bland art style. However, there are reasons for WoW 2 aside from the "unreal graphics" line.
    1. A fresh start for the Devs - This is my biggest draw for a WoW 2. The WoW devs have learned a metric ton of lessons from their decades on this game. In many of their interviews, they talk about how the sheer amount of "spaghetti code" the game is based on hinders or outright stops them from doing things. I'd love to see what they could accomplish with a clean slate where they're not being held back by 20+ year old code. (I honestly wish the same thing for FFXIV)
    2. Graphics and Performance - No, I don't want Unreal photorealistic characters, but a new graphic engine does enable them to simply do more in game. We can keep the awesome art identity of WoW, but bring it into higher graphical fidelity and also (theoretically) improve performance. This could also allow for grander scale in some areas, like making cities feel more like cities.
    3. Implement systems the way the Devs truly desire - Ion said in an interview a few years ago that one of the main reasons we don't have player housing in the game already is because they simply can't implement that system in a way the devs are happy with. I assume this is similar for things like aerial combat in WotLK. While I know we're getting something similar in War Within, imagine once again what they could do with all the systems without being bogged down by the current engine.

  • @Corwin19
    @Corwin19 3 місяці тому

    I like the point you made about WoWs art style aging better. Even with the more cartoony look, they have been able to do really epic stuff. And DF really blew me away with its scale and density.
    When people say they want WoW with better graphics, I think what they mean is that they want WoW to look like the cinematics. That would be pretty awesome, but it’s still not quite feasible. Graphically yes, you could get pretty close with something like UE5, but one of the big reasons why WoW became so popular is accessibility. You don’t need a high end expensive system to play it.
    My hope is that we get a revamp to the old continents. Updating Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms, potentially after the world soul saga, would be perfect for making the game feel fresh. It would allow them to bring the old world to scale and up to date with all of the story changes that have occurred over the last two decades. And of course the original looks will be preserved in classic. I would also love to see dynamic ground mounts, but that could just be wishful thinking haha.

  • @DeadnCold
    @DeadnCold 3 місяці тому

    WoW IMHO needs a hard story end. A point at which all of the old baggage of all the old xpacs etc. can be put to the side and retired. And I think that needs a sort of but not really WoW2. At the end of The Last Titan like you said the Titan and Void aspects of the story come to a solid end point. Then you retire the game as it is at that point, leaving all the servers up as legacy servers classic style. So that the game is still there and playable but it is sunsetted. Then new servers, with all your old characters and all their collections copied over, gameplay and everything is the same but there is a new beginning to the story.
    Start by giving us a real time skip of 10-20 years so that they can start a whole new story with new characters like Dagran Jr, Thrall's kids at the forefront, and the factions and races settled into a different dynamic. But most importantly a new generic leveling experience that is built in such a way that it is xpac agnostic. Like Exile's Reach is now but for the whole stretch to what becomes the current end game story of the current xpac. Like at the start it is 1-50 with 50-60 being the main story focus and where our max level copied characters start at. Then with the first xpac it goes from 1-60 and ends the new character at the start of the new xpac with the old 50-60 game becoming optional static game zones outside of the leveling experience.
    So it's really more of a WoW 1.5, but for marketing reasons and so on calling it WoW 2 would probably be easier.

  • @Raika63
    @Raika63 3 місяці тому +1

    The reasons I'd want a WoW 2 would be to give them a chance to really start from scratch on classes and some combat mechanics. Maybe a lot of stays around, including tab targetting even, but I kind of feel like at this point we aren't ever going to see spell breakers, battle mages, shadow hunters, or lots of cool very unique-to-wow classes/specs because we already gave their abilities or playstyles out. It's still *possible* but I just don't see them going that direction, and I've been wanting battle mages and spell breakers since TBC and shadow hunters since I realized how cool vol'jin was around the MoP timeframe. (thanks to one of the books). Hero talents might be the closest we get, and I think people looking at, say Dark Ranger or even Mountain Thane aren't quite going to get as much flavor as they would like as long as those fantasies are tied so strongly to the base spec.

    Honestly while the awakened season has been fun due to things like the bullion system making gearing more satisfying, and being able to say a proper goodbye to Dragonflight, I'll personally be glad if we don't get it again. My guild became noticably burned out by doing the same content we'd been doing since the expansion launch, and it's caused us to take our official raid break much earlier than we have in previous patches. Usually we'll have maybe a month or two at *most* off raiding, but now it looks like we won't be raiding again for 3 or more months depending on when S1 starts.

    Might be in the minority here, but I'm a fan of Season 4. My argument for a WoW 2 is for them to remove old bloat to the code and allow a gap in the story for a warcraft 4 to build new story and villains like WC3 and the others did for original WoW. Also with a WoW 2 there is a bigger chance to get new players than releasing an xpac does. Also allows the devs to break player characters out of the old factions and possibly add new factions. Allowing for players to join guilds with whomever while also getting rep with whatever faction they want and without having players tied to them they can do more with them storywise.

    Just had a thought, the conflict that seems to be going on between the greater powers seems to have some focus on the world souls it seems that each "team" is attempting to claim/harvest/recruit world souls before they emerge from their worlds I'm wondering if the idea that they need to do so in the same method is flawed I'm wondering if each greater power has a different objective and we have been making assumptions because the three greater powers that we have interacted with the most, Arcane, Fell and Void all have similar objectives.
    I'm thinking that Life/Death aren't actually involved in the game they are the admins of the game the fundamental powers that exist regardless of the outcome, they create the game pieces, mortals, and clean them up when they fall.
    I'm also thinking maybe Light doesn't need to get to the world soul first as one of the big themes of light is redemption and conversion what if Light can come in after a world soul emerges and claim them through conversion.

I’d argue on a scale of good to great, it’s good, but there are so many little things they’ve let be sloppy that are still sloppy and they continue to make sloppy.
