महादेव (भगवान शिव) के विष पीने का कई पुराने पौराणिक कथाओं में विवादित विवरण हैं, लेकिन एक प्रमुख कथा के अनुसार, शिव ने विष पीने का कारण विशेष प्रार्थना करने के लिए किया था।
इस कथा के अनुसार, जब समुद्र मंथन का काम हो रहा था, तो देवताओं और असुरों के बीच एक महत्वपूर्ण आवश्यकता थी - अमृत (अजर अमरत्व, अनम्रतता) प्राप्त करने की। अमृत केवल देवताओं के लिए था, लेकिन शिव के भक्त चंद्रकंत के प्रार्थना पर, वे उनके लिए भी अमृत बनने को तैयार हुए।
जब अमृत बन गया और देवता-असुर उसे बाँट रहे थे, तो शिव ने रूपवत्ता किया और विष की भांति दिखाई दिया, जिससे उसे अमृत के साथ मिलने में कोई समस्या नहीं हो। इसलिए, उन्होंने विष पी लिया ताकि वे अमृत के साथ देवताओं के साथ हो सकें।
इस कथा से प्राप्त सिख है कि महादेव के विष पीने का मुख्य कारण भक्ति और अमृत प्राप्ति की इच्छा थी।

According to this legend, when the churning of the ocean was taking place, there was an important need between the Gods and the Asuras - to obtain Amrit (Ajar immortality, immortality). The nectar was meant only for the gods, but on the request of Chandrakant, a devotee of Shiva, he agreed to become nectar for them too.
When the nectar was made and the gods and demons were distributing it, Shiva took the form of poison and appeared like poison, so that it would not have any problem in mixing with the nectar. Therefore, he drank the poison so that he could be with the gods along with the nectar.
The lesson learned from this story is that the main reason for Mahadev drinking poison was devotion and the desire to obtain nectar.
