    Since I built a plastic model of the Arado Ar 196 about 50 years ago, this plane was always one of my favourites. I read about this fight about 40 years ago in a German book and always wondered why this well documented and thrilling incident isn't better known by air enthusiasts. Many thanks for this excellent video :)

      Appreciate those words, I too also love the Ar 196 - glad we could shed some light on this story.

      I also built the AR-196 model though a bit longer ago. It was one of my favorites, too! I've wondered about getting back into modeling but the price of models today seems rather exaggerated, in my opinion. I think I paid 69 cents or so for the 196 and regularly paid 39 or 49 cents for many others. Paying 10 bucks for one now would gag me.

      I too build an Ar196 (Heller) in a Diorama. The one who the Norwegian Navy captured from the heavy cruiser Admiral Hipper.
      Interesting story. And unexpected that the Ar 196 fight so long, successful.
      On the other hand the pilots of the other side seams to be newbee or think six to one is a easy trophy. Experienced fighter pilots will shot down this lame duck with ease.

    This reminds me of a story I read about a Hellcat attacking a Japanese floatplane(PETE) sustained bullets in the engine from the rear gunner. The Hellcat pilot bailed out humiliating by being shot down by a PETE.

      On 16 February 1945, a Mitsubishi Zero Type F1-M observation aircraft piloted by Ensign Fujita Nobuo of the Imperial Japanese Navy shot down an F4F over the Japanese mainland with nose 7.7 mm machine gun fire. Ensign Fujita was the only pilot to bomb the US mainland with a military aircraft (seaplane) on 9 September 1942.

    Really nice to hear the aviation stories that go untold. And the ones from smaller contrys that we seldom here about in WW2.

    That's a Long Odds story like they did in the "Dogfights" series on the History Channel. There was another story of an SBD that fought three AM-6 Zeros and downed them. Any aircraft flown to its strengths can be a formidable foe.

    Shooting down rescue planes is not what i call fair warfare.
    Somewhere in the war a German rescue plane picked up 2 British pilots from the North Sea when it was attacked by British fighters. The plane crashed into the sea and all on board died in the crash. The British airmen as well the German crew were burried on the small Island of Schiermonnikoog with militairy honor.

    • @aviationdeepdive
      @aviationdeepdive  Рік тому +6

      That's an interesting point, the same had occurred to me - I'm not sure why these kind of rescue flights were not distinguished from combat duties

      @@aviationdeepdive From what I read, German pilots were reluctant to shoot at downed enemy pilots, but Churchill made them a target. He wanted enemy pilots dead rather chance that they might fly again.

    I always thought it's a cool plane. I know it's pre-war design, but with MG151-20 (later) or at least a larger ammo count for the MG FF/M would be nice upgrade. The floatplane version of the Zero has very similar firepower (just one more 7,7mm MG to forward).

    • @aviationdeepdive
      @aviationdeepdive  Рік тому +4

      Later Ar 196s often did change their cannons to 13mm MG 131s or MG 151/20s via field modifications from the crews!

    Unfortunately some details of your video are wrong. Aircraft 7R+GK as depicted in 2:33 would belong to 2./Aufkl. Gr. (See) 125 or in English: 2nd squadron (a German squadron had up to 12 aircraft) of (maritime) reconnaissance group 125. A German "group" usually had 3 squadrons. Together with the staff flight it had 35-40 aircraft on hand. But 2./Aufkl. Gr. (See) 125 was formed in July 1943 on the island of Crete! Therefore the fuselage code and the white tailband are wrong. The aircraft in this incident belonged to 1./Bordfl. Gr. 196, coded T3+DH, without a fuselage band. Aircraft of this unit were normally launched from catapults on battlecruisers.
    I suppose the video-sequences are made with IL-2 Sturmovik or some other computergame simulation. But why do you apply this artifical blurring and image noise? It's perfectly clear that this not a "real" picture. So this artificial effect is completely gratuitous...

      ... It's from WT, so skins and camoflages are limited. Also, why do you think films have effects in them? I suspect they did it because it looks nice... everyone else to seems to like it, you are just being needlessly negative. I think it fits the story and is more immersive than using pristine untouched modern day footage.
