I'm guessing not everyone might find this as interesting as other games, but I really enjoyed seeing how two defenders approached the match from a strategy standpoint.
Ma Te never let Hou Yingchao get into a comfortable zone & start doing his crazy spin variation on his chops; Ma would rarely attack more than one chop at a time, choosing to push that 2nd or 3rd chop (moving Hou in & out, putting him off-balance). When he did attack a chop, Ma was good at varying his placement, constantly moving Hou around. I know a lot of this is "standard" anti-chopper tactics, but it's rare to see people able to perform it so well.
Ma could also attack pushes a lot better with his long pip side swipes, whereas Hou could not (because of the short pips). This meant Ma had the advantage in the pushing battle because he could attack balls that Hou could not, again putting Hou under pressure.
    Thank you for the upload!

is it just me or do I feel like Hou's big frame makes it hard for him to really be that effective? Seems late on the ball frequently, not as nimble as I might expect from a defensive player. Certainly the footwork seems a bit off.

@@matmagix3845 Hou was definitely a lot slimmer in older videos of him from early/mid 2000's & 2010's. I mean, he IS over 40 now! Who knows how much he trains, what his diet is, or some other factors that might be in play. Also, as men get older they start getting a little chunkier around the waist (hence the eponymous "dad bod").
I don't think it's impacting his footwork though. Against normal styles, he seems to have no problem moving & being in position. I think his footwork looks "off" in this match because he was facing Ma Te, who, being a defender himself, knows just how to screw with a defenders' footwork. At least that's my thought on it!

Choppers need to be able to play against another chopper. In a perfect world, a chopper would love to defend against an attacker 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, but this is not always the case. You are not always going to play against an offensive player. There are times where you will face a pure defense chopper, pure defense anti-spin or long pimples blocker, modern defender, lobbers etc. I see so many choppers at my clubs perform very well against attackers, but when playing against another defender, it's awkward for them and end up losing. Choppers need to know their own weakness and how to play against a chopper. You're not the only chopper in the world, so when you are played against one, you better know how to essentially beat yourself. Can't play against attackers all the time.
This comment is to not criticize Ma Te or Hou Yingchao, as they are both amazing modern defenders, but to those who still play defense, eventually, you are going to have to go out of your "I only defense against an attacker" bubble and learn to "Okay, I am facing another defender. I have a strategy to play against them."
