- I have harbored this idea of an Ice Tunnel since my engineering days at the National Institute of Technology Srinagar. Snow, Ice, and sub-zero temperatures are the biggest challenges at the remote and high altitude passes of Ladakh. This makes it exceedingly difficult to keep the roads open for more than six months a year. But then the same challenges can become the most abundantly available resources at these difficult locations if we apply them correctly. Ice has high compressive strength and in a parabolic arched tunnel all the forces are compressive only, and since the sub-zero temperatures can keep it frozen most of the year we should be able to make seasonal ice tunnels on high passes in places like Ladakh.
At the Zojila where a real mountain tunnel is being built, such tunnels could cover the approach roads up to the tunnel, which would be roughly 20 Kms on either side. Keeping these roads cleared of the heavy snowfall and avalanches could easily cost up to a million dollars and roughly 500 tons of Co2 emission each year.
Who knows my crazy Ice Tunnel could become an interesting solution to this challenge… using the problem itself as a solution.

The concept is in line with the ways dams are designed in a curved manner , thus distributing the load on to the earth sidings. Challenge would be to create a frame on which the snow / ice would be constructed. Need to remember that the weather changes gradually and the snowfall is also over a period of time. The idea definitely holds promise and a practical solution would immensely benefit the environment and reduce long-term costs. Exceptional out of the box thinking.

Sir, we can make an air balloon 15km long by welding HDPE sheets and before inflating that, we will put another arch shaped HDPE layer to fill water inside. First we shall fill the inner layer with compressed air to form the shape then we pour water on the top layer. After freezing the water layer. We can remove the compressed air layer through which vehicles can pass. This will be safe and budget friendly for years.
Such an idea is not economically feasible. Because first you have to be present at a place before an avalanche happens there. If you think that you can inflate such air balloons for 15kms with twists and turns, then just imagine the improbability of such an idea which you need in winter only. Also you have to close the roads purposefully to be able to do such a work every year. Imagine doing it more than once in a short span of time. It will be better if we can make a lightweight permanent structure for 15kms (or in areas prone to avalanches). So i think it will be better to go with Sonam sir's idea with some minor modifications which i suggested in my comment.

The air balloon does not have to be 15 km long. It can be 1 km long or less as well. The tunnel can be built bit by bit as well. Especially on the twists and turns.

Dear Mr Sonam Wangchuk, I suggest that you use Thermocol waste for scaffolding and then use cotton or felt waste from cotton mills and paper mills as the soaking layer. I am fully aware that Thermocol is not environment friendly but it will be strong enough as scaffolding for the dry and wet cotton till it condenses in ice arch and it can be shrink in size and can be removed from under the ice arch ( while maintaining the arch) by simply spraying acetone onto the Thermocol and carved out arch ( prefabricated elsewhere or on site can then be left with biodegradable cotton and felt lining with ice arch superstructure which will hold itself for the winter snowfall and avalanche season.
I know that Thermocol is not environment friendly and not biodegradable but if the cotton and felt scaffolding were to last through the winter the problem is solved.
On the other hand if condensed ice permeating through the porous scaffolding hold out even in summer, that would be a blessing in disguise.
This still leaves the problem of acetone. It will evaporate in air sucked into the atmosphere.
During spraying of acetone human exposure can be avoided by using protective gear and masks.
Reusing Thermocol cotton and felt waste versus using acetone and the shrunken Thermocol are the pros and cons that can be worked out during the experimenting stage.
I am a medical doctor and not a chemical engineer but I am talking Science here not superstition.

As an engineer my thoughts flowed as follows: Let the supporting former (or frame/equivalent ) remain in place, throughout the winter. It should be planned to be out side the"breadth of the road". It will allow vehicles to pass. 1)When the ice starts melting, the melted ice will not be melting uniformly. It will be uneven and unpredictable. At such time, the supporting frame will bear the load of the melting ice/water. 2) Also, in the event of an avalanche, the supporting frame will bear the weight to some extent, and allow time for help to come in.
3) There should be luminous markers at the ends of the tunnel, which can be seen by drivers. Markers of "danger/attention ( exclamation mark inside triangle) " will be additional help.
4) Maybe a speed limit too is required. Otherwise, the wind will create a force (much like a plane on a runway) and shake the tunnel itself. Slow speed will reduce this possibility.
It's a great idea and I wish all success to such an innovative venture.

These arches is very ancient. These designs can be found in Rome, Ancient India, and other ancient architectures. The weight in the middle top puts force on these side bottoms. The total weight is on the bottom and mid of side walls. The stronger the side wall the stronger the mid part to take weight. But the details have to be tested for height, thickness and here the material is ice. I pray and appluad your courage and hard work.
