G&L Comanche Tribute : Demo and Review

  • Опубліковано 12 лют 2018
  • This is a full demo and tone run through for a Tribute Series G&L Comanche. This particular model is in Olympic White with a maple neck and rosewood fingerboard. Everything great about an S-type guitar but with the added features of the 2-point tremolo bridge, PTB controls and the MFD Z-coil pickups.
    All of the audio from the guitar is coming from a Line 6 Helix using a pretty basic US Double Vib amp model.
    If you have any questions please let me know!

    Nice review. Thanks! Appreciate you doing the clean sounds.a lot of guitar demos or pickup demos are so distorted that you really have no idea what the guitar sounds like, it's more of an amp or pedal demo. So great job all around! 🎉

    Great review - exactly what I would want to see in a review of a guitar that's a little different like this one. Especially appreciate you showing the clean sounds in all the different pickup positions. Seems like a lot of tonal variety for a guitar in this price range.

    Ha! I have a beautiful flame top version of this Comanche (really digging your white one here!) and I love it, happily playing it now for probably going on five years or so. Imagine my surprise to learn here today that the Treble tone knob pulled UP for even more options! I usually check for stuff like that but I never even thought about it here with those usefully cool PTB controls. Like that was enough fun, I suppose LOL. Got mine minty used, with no manual (but who reads those anyway, right?) or any indication of this cool “secret” setting. Duh, perhaps?
    Many thanks for such a complete and informative review. IMO, these guitars are real sleepers. Just dug mine out, checked for that pull function, and now I’ll probably be playing it all afternoon. Thanks!

    I think one of the things that sets the G&L apart is the PBT controls. That was not demonstrated. That gives this guitar a wide pallet of tones. You can go from fat to chimy.

    With the push-pull pot in the up position, the #3 (middle) position engages the middle pickup alone.

    Just to add a bit: I live near beach in Thailand (everything seems to corrode). Had mine for 3-4 years and NO corrosion on chrome parts (amazing!). Also, tuners & trem very solid, holds it's tune. The middle pickup is much more usable than on a strat, on it's own. Do check out with whatever amp you may have as some matings are better than others. Z coils are something of a beast and I suggest not diming everything....

      The Z-coils are fantastic, in fact I ordered an ASAT loaded with the Z-coils because I think it will be a better fit for me. I replied to a similar comment a while back, here were my thoughts! : One of the ‘problems’ I’ve had with the drive sounds is drastic tonal changes between the pickups. On the clean settings it’s easy to get your standard 5 sounds, but with drive (a tube screamer type) it tends to go from Bridge pickup brightness to muddy really quick. I tend to build off of as clean of a base tone as possible and use different overdrives depending on the guitar. I normally use the Stupor OD or Teemah models in the Helix with the Comanche. Those lend themselves better to the pickups in my opinion!

  • @mikeaustin4138

    I have a S-500, which is the same guitar as this except that the pickups are inline and not hum-free (though still quieter than most single coil guitars). They take some effort to dial in great tones; if you expect it to sound like a Strat, you'll be disappointed. However, since the pickups are hotter than alnicos, they'll push the front end of your amp sooner and you can get some glorious sustain out of these guitars.

    Great video. I noticed that this has a slightly warm sound, compared to typical strat sound and even the G&L legacy. My question is, if you roll off the bass, can it get as bright as the G&L legacy? Maybe not exact but closer to that shimmery bright sound? I'm torn between this, a legacy, or player series strat

    • @CrowderMusic
      @CrowderMusic  5 років тому +3

      I've played both and played a few Strats over the past few years and I would say this is the most versatile of the bunch. It can clean up nicely, and even a tweak of your amp EQ can bring out a little more sparkle. The huge benefit of the z-coils is that they are noiseless (more or less) and there is less volume loss in the 2-4 positions in my opinion. You can't go wrong with any of them but I think the Commanche is unique and great!

    Curious if you're still loving this guitar? I'm still thinking about one. You seem to pretty much get a single coil chime for the most part with the noiseless pups. I really like the additional 2 pickup positions offered and the 2 tone knobs. Also, I hear G&L's tremolo's are very good and I use mine a lot. Any tuning stability issues while you were still using the trem?

      Hey Nazmo, I loved the guitar for a long time! Unfortunately, I've never been a big 'strat' kind of person. I've tried many and the Comanche was one of the best but I ended up trading it and a few other guitars to fund another purchase.
      All that being said, the variety of tones is immense and I loved how quiet the pickups were. The tremolo works really well too, I just tend to block off trems so it didn't really help me at all! When I did use it it stayed in tune better than the Fender's I'd played. Hope that info helps! At about the 10:24 time stamp you state "before getting into the negatives about the guitar...." But where the negative? I'm thinking about getting one but I can't find one to play,, at Sam Ash, or GC you have to order it before you can get your hands on one. I found a Pro Audio shop in Temecula CA that carries them but they don't allow anyone to touch/demo them without purchasing one out right??? I even tried to contact G&L through there on-line mail/request section, 6 months ago, still no answer.
    Looks like a great guitar (looking for S-Style, no hum, single coil sound) But their sales team/marketing is seriously lacking. So I've been scouring the net for reviews to see If I should commit any more of my time on this endeavor.

    • @CrowderMusic
      @CrowderMusic  6 років тому +3

      Sorry about that Ken, I must've lost my train of thought during the shooting!
      One negative that I have experienced is the bridge. As someone who tends to block a tremolo bridge on this style guitar it is extremely difficult (tricky) to do so. You end up having to block both sides of the trem block to get a decent hard tail feel. If you leave the bridge floating it does play in tune well and work well as a trem but you have to keep a light picking hand. If you rest your hand on the bridge too much it will pull the guitar out of tune. Because it floats it also makes tuning a pain as for each adjustment you make the bridge moves, meaning you have to check all the strings again.
      A second issue I've run into, which is less a negative and more a player issue, is the toggle on the Tone pot. This is the pull pot that engages the neck/bridge together to give you a few extra combos. It works well but it doesn't stand out visually for me so I often forget that it is engaged. This happened to me this past week and halfway through rehearsal I was scratching my head, "Why does this sound so off?" Turns out I had the pull pot engaged. Pushed it back in and my tones went back to normal. It's honestly a feature I could do without.
      Other than those though, there aren't many negatives for me. The neck feels good, fretwork is good, tuners work well (hardtailed) and the pickups sound fantastic! Hope that addresses some of your concerns, let me know if there is anything specific you are worried about and I can look into it or try to make another video.

    • @kenwatanabe2599
      @kenwatanabe2599 6 років тому

      Thank you very much for the response, I have a few question on this guitar, mostly on the trem, but since you blocked yours I'll ask a few others.
      How much does the guitar weigh? I'm partial to light weight guitars.
      Have you any experience with other noiseless single coil pickups and could you comment on the differences between the two. I so look forward to not having so much 60 cycle hum from my setup, and immediate twisting the vol knob between songs or durning quite section of a song is annoying.
      Is the nut, bone, plastic, etc?
      In the Vid, your NOT using a normal guitar output cable, what / who is that wireless ? unit.
      Can you give me the width of the nut/string spacing?
      Did you notice any difference in the note sustaining with the trem blocked VS. unblocked?
      As you may have noticed my lack of support from G&L from their website, and my opinion of their marketing and availability of their guitars to have a hands on experience with their guitar. Have you any support interaction from G&L, positive or negative?
      Were you able to get your hands on it before you bought it? Or did you just buy it on blind faith through the internet?
      Thanks again

      You can get in the ballpark. In a similar sense that an ASAT can get close to a Tele sound, the Commanche can get close but the sum of the parts does sound like it's own thing. The Zcoils being silent and their construction takes away a bit of the glassy sparkle of a strat, even the 2-4 positions don't have the same character. They are both great, just different

  • @jchavins
    @jchavins 5 років тому +1

    The Z coil pickups are interesting....G&L sells them as a set of 3 on their website. I was interested in replacing the pickups on one of my Strat partscasters to see if I could have a truly quiet Strat. This project involved a blank pickguard and cutting for the pickups as a pickguard is not available. Also it meant enlarging the cavities in the body. The result was a quiet guitar but the sound is different. Actually I think my Nashville Teles are closer to a true Strat sound than these pickups. They are quiet but if I were to gig live again this guitar would stay at home.

    On the issue of the pickups having their own sound, i think the body wood does imprint a very not very stratocaster sound. Its mahogany rather than alder like most strats. Other mahogany bodied guitars usually have a more crunchy sound, like most all of the Gibson models. Id hope the passive bass and treble could bring it back to more like a strat. The pickups no doubt probably have a significant effect too.

    Hey Andy Crowder! i've gotten myself a Indonesia tribute Comanche just like yours in the video. Love the richness of the tone and simply amazing having this guitar. However, I'm not sure if it is just me, but the neck and the feel is rather stiff, and i have some fret buzzes around the 11th fret. And on the high E string, the string tends to slip out of the fretboard if i were to pull off too hard. does this also happen to your comanche when you had it? Thanks! :)

    • @CrowderMusic

      I felt the guitar played pretty stiff as well, but I like that in a guitar! Do you know what strings you have on it? For the buzzing and high E, it might just be in need of a good setup. I did find the floating tremolo a little tricky to set up and get used to.

      Thanks for the speedy replies! But wouldn’t the stiff neck cause it to be less playable, and harder to play fast? I’ve been playing on my entry-level Strat and the feel on the previous one is smoother than this strat. Not sure if it is because of the jumbo frets and the 12” inch radius.. I’m still trying to “bond” with it, haha! I’ve done a setup on it and to change to a 9’s instead of a 10’s initially. The guitar tech mentioned that if the fret buzz is not audible through the amp, it’s fine, but it just feels awful to feel that buzz on your fingertips, and as for the high E, he said it might be the saddle block that is too wide, or there is a bride misalignment. I’ve noticed that the high E string doesn’t align the centre of the bridge pickup, but deviates to the right. But yeah, I suppose i need to bring it to a luthier for a good look at it.

      @@choongjunrong6927 - I disagree with whoever your guitar tech was, no buzz is good! It doesn't matter if you can't hear it through an amp, it's still not good to have that buzz.
      When I say the neck played stiffer, I don't mean it in a bad way. Stiff to me means stable but also a little more tension on the strings. So a Tele would feel stiffer than a normal Strat style to me. That being said, one of the things I liked was that the string tension felt more like a Tele/hardtail guitar. The feel may be something that you don't bond with as well, the bigger concern is probably the string spacing. Sorry you are having issues with the guitar!

    There is a noiseless single coil from fender that it is not a stacked humbcuker but a split coil in line in the same space as a normal single. It is a very good noiseless single it sound like a real single coil without the hum. Buuuuut the problem is that there is a problem with bends. The sound is muted exactly in the middle. The problem is solved here with a split like p bass. I don't know why this was not used in the OG strat.

      @@CrowderMusic no, is the super 55 split coil. I have the jazz bass version. I don't bend that much on bass. You can't bend the 3rd string up or the 4th down on the guitar single coil version. The sound is canceled when the string is moved to the middle. That is a huge downside.

    • @CrowderMusic
      @CrowderMusic  5 років тому +3

      Thanks Aleksander, you aren't the first to point that out! Here is my response to another similar comment:

      @@CrowderMusic thanks for the fast reply! Those are minor issues for me, since I mainly play in the studio.
      Tell me just one more thing: How is the playability and the construction compared to other and more expensive instruments? I dont care about how flashy it is, but I made a mistake and ordered a danelectro '84, after having and loving the '59, and I was surprised how bad the neck is, and how heavy and poorly playable it is compared to it's older brother, or some other instruments I have..
      I love the P style pickup sound, I think it can cut through the mix better than the classic single coil design, but Im scared to pull the trigger on this one.. Im not sure if I'll get a mexican or indonesian fender quality of the guitar.. (I use fender as a comparison), and I cant try it out in Serbia :(

      @@AleksandarStanojkovic - As for construction and playability, it is very high quality. When I first pulled it out of the box it felt like a solid, well built instrument. I have had G&L Tribute's that have needed fret work but the Comanche didn't have any issues. The neck on the G&L's are solid, but the guitar as a whole was really heavy! The body is slightly larger than a normal Strat, which may have contributed to the weight.

    I'm the only one that found your phrase if you want a fender then go by a fender but if your willing to look at something else here's A G N L no I found that phrase ironic since G and L was started by Leo Fender that's where the L comes in G and L that guitar has pickups designed by Leo Fender and a trem designed by Leo Fender So essentially this is a fender in every sense of the word more so than some of the guitars out there since everything about this guitar was designed by Leo Fender. After he sold his 1st company in 1966 being the Fender company he continued designing and innovating till the day he died in 1991 In 1980 he started this company because he wasn't done he had more to contribute he thought so G and L has all his innovations from later in life and Fender has all his innovations from early on
