I’ve got an AES and the top loader Neo CD. I’ve had both for years when prices were still reasonable. I would definitely say the CD is worth having just because of the price of AES games now. Load times on the earlier games which are less than 100meg are quick and only load once though there is a slight delay sometimes on som games as the music track is streamed off CD before gameplay starts. Unfortunately though CD prices are now rising as well. With the CD and 161 cartridge for AES it’s the perfect set up for me.
i install NeoGeoCD SD kit today, and it's fabulous !!! 4x faster loading and cheat menu inside :) ... my neogeo lens was dead, now i can play again !! freaky awesome :)
The little switch mode can be useful for changing regions! Also, the Neo Geo CD "Top Loader" is very back-ups friendly... Meaning you don't really need to buy anything, just burn quality CDs at 2x or 4x speeds and you're set. There's a handful of games that are protected, but there's patched versions available. That's what made me choose the CD, I own 3 retail copies and I made about 20 back-ups 😅
If you take the disc drive out of a PS1 and replace it with a Sony disc man drive you get way better load times. I wonder if you can do something of the sort with neo Geo... anybody tried it?
I remember the Neo Geo CDZ announced in videogames mags back in the day but never saw it in stores. The stores over where I used to live still carried the cartridge system. I think it was Electronics Boutique or Babbages that sold the pricey system and the games. The CDZ was costly but at least the games were affordable $50-$70 a far cry from the $200+ the cartridges commanded. Again I never saw one for sale anywhere. Great that you have the CD version in your collection. Good review and cool video Wicked!👍
The Neo Geo CD console was the only way to play the SNK games in the mid 90s. My colleagues had one. The prices for the cds were affordable. The cartridges weren't affordable. I remember the clicking sound of the controller. The Neo Geo CD controller was the best game pad i have ever hold in my hands.
My Polymega has let me start to dip my toe into NGCD, and it's so nice to not have loading when it's installed on the ssd hearing amd seeing all the pain with the original hardware. I'm not a huge fighting game person but it's got some good ones and there's a fair few good games in other genres for the system.
I've owned my own Neo Geo CD alongside a nice selection of around 30ish titles for almost two years and its quite a fun system to play when you don't want to pay for AES or MVS carts. The arranged soundtracks many come with on CD are outstanding, easily a selling point for the NGCD. I'm used to playing lots of older CD based consoles like the PlayStation, 3DO and Sega CD so, personally, I didn't think the Neo Geo CD's load times were all that bad. In fact, a lot of games have great load times with some basically only loading once for the initial startup and nothing more afterwards. Most shmups and side scrollers like Magician Lord are like this. Honestly, it's only mid to late release fighting games that have longer load times or multiple annoying load quirks. The worst ones that many may consider unbearable are The Last Blade 1 and 2, King of Fighters 98 and 99 and Samurai Shodown 4. I personally don't mind Shodown 4's loading but the former 4 titles are really too much for the CD to handle. All others like older KoF games, Fatal Fury, Galaxy Fight, Far East of Eden and older Samurai Shodown titles are perfectly fine on the CD.

I recommend you do the language mod to your console by just soldering on a simple jump wire on the PCB switching it to either EU or USA console - it will play the game in English (if there is an English version on disk which there is with most games). The main console menu will also be in English following the mod.
US + Euro regions are censored, though; Re-colored blood + nerfed boob physics! Uni-Bios is the best method of getting censorship removed, playable bosses, + restored physics.... on the International versions. I LOVE those Redbook soundtracks on Fatal Fury & KoF Neo-CD games 👍. Wish Magician Lord would have gotten one!?
I can't agree more. I own one and to be honest this is a must have because it improves the loading speed from cd rom x1 to almost cd rom x4 (no kidding) for less than 100€. Some PCBs also allow you to keep the cd rom drive fully functional. The back side of it, you need to be able to solder a few things. Personally I was able to find a shop selling them ready to go with a 64GB sd card. This is magic.

I owned a Neo Geo CD since 1994 and the problem was the controllers always broke after a while and you couldn't go to your local game shop because they didn't sell them only SNES, Mega Drive and Saturn controllers. The only place that sold them was the import shop (CA Games) that was 30 miles away up in Glasgow Scotland and I couldn't go by myself at the time as I was a young lad so I had to wait till the weekend and drive up to the import shop with parents hoping they got the NG CD controllers in stock and sometimes they didn't lol.
I got a Neo Geo CDz with around 30 games for 400€ like 15 years ago or so. And a EU CD Unit with four games for around 150€. Thought this was a good price back then. I‘m looking for some new controllers, the original ones are worn out over the time.
The only thing that made the Neo Geo stand out for me was the zoom in / zoom out feature in games like Samurai Showdown and the Characters were much bigger than on SNES and Genesis for some odd reason.

Yeah, I was able to play with a NGCD for a very long time. Load times are horrible but having arcade perfect ports is the result. One of the most egrerious offenders in load times is KOF94 which they Preload ALL SIX characters. But its awesome to see no loads for six characters, you'll never see the PS1 do that. =) Also Samurai Shodown RPG, but it was eventually ported to the PS1/Saturn anyway. Keep to the initial early AES releases like I've mentioned and the NeoCD pays for itself instantly compared to AES prices. Use an MVS for the humungous meg titles.. ✌️
Ive got a Neo Geo CD and CDZ along with the AES and it works out pretty well. Fighting games have the worst loading times on the CD systems so I use the AES for those. Expensive shmups like Last Resort and Pulstar are much cheaper on CD and I use the CD/CDZ for shmups/sports/puzzle games. The reason is because a lot of those games only have one load screen at the beginning like Last Resort and League Bowling and they never stop to load again. I would highly recommend the CDZ as it is reallly effective in cutting down load times but I bought all this stuff a long time ago. These days the CDZ seems insanely overpriced. It actually costs more than an AES. If you love Neo Geo Hardware and game on a CRT, my recommendation is to get an AES console and a 161-in-1 cartridge and call it a day.
hey wicked can the aes be modded if u take out the single speed drive put the laser on say a 6x that's same size as original pop it in with the geo laser soldered in it place?

Keep to the lower meg games and the NeoCD is perfectly fine 🤠✌️ Ie. Last Resort, ASO2, Mutation Nation, Ninja Commando, Sengoku2 etc are all a Single 40 second initial loading only.. 🤠
I have the NEO GEO CDZ system, but the affordable way to play is just about every NEO GEO game has been released for the Switch Xbox and Playstation and they are like $7.99 each.
The irony about the Neo Geo CD, considering Neo Geo fame, is that it is worthy but only if you are interested in playing earlier Neo Geo non-fighting games on real hardware and with some great arranged soundtrack. Magician Lord, Last Resort, Sengoku 2, Street Hoops, Neo Driftout, Puzzle Bubble, Sonic Wings 2, Metal Slug, Top Hunter, Crossed Swords 2 all fun games for which loading times aren't a problem. From my experience the better fighting games in term of game quality/shorter loading times are World Heroes Perfect and Fatal Fury Special. The real issue for NGCD aren't long loading times per se because if they were one off like in Last Resort they would be manageable, the real problem is when they are long AND frequent, which is a combo that happen often in fighting games.
Many NGCD games lack Redbook audio-quality, tracks! Magician Lord has the same soundtrack as the cart version. Fatal Fury & KoF games have actual, Redbook audio tracks.
Do you guys think that the NEOGEO CD library will get inflated and ridiculously priced within the next few years? Im already having a hard time looking for games for a decent price here in the US :/
So far i can see Neo Geo is expensive and will always be sadly. There are some cheap games to pick up here and there. You can maybe sometimes directly import them from Japan with Ebay maybe ? Or rmaybe local conventions ?... did pickup a pile of them there.

Unfortunately, the LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNNG Load times made the games virtually unplayable.
I hope you have metal slug
12:13 no aero fighters 3 and no blazing star
Keep to the lower meg games and the NeoCD is perfectly fine 🤠✌️
Ie. Last Resort, ASO2, Mutation Nation, Ninja Commando, Sengoku2 etc are all a Single 40 second initial loading only.. 🤠
So is the SNK Neo Geo Cd only in Japanese ?
Super easy to mod. Love my Neo Geo CD
I have the Neo Geo CDZ Konsole!
I have the NEO GEO CDZ system, but the affordable way to play is just about every NEO GEO game has been released for the Switch Xbox and Playstation and they are like $7.99 each.
LOL, yeah that is a other way to go...
Only wanted to dedicate this to real neo geo hardware to be honest 😀
Mister Fpga is king 😁
emulation is the way
I have the cd console is not expensive but the cd games is expensive . Most of the fighting games are not valuable.
Almost all of the games were great.
@@WickedGamerCollector unfortunately it is. I’m up to about 22 titles so far and ultimately I’d like to collect a full Japanese set. Just wondering if perhaps the prices would go down a little bit or if it’s best to just roll with the punches as I break my piggy bank for my goal. I’ve tried multiple conventions and they’re so obscure I’d be happy to even find basic NEOGEO pocket titles! Dallas, TX is a little dry on these CD games
That console failed on games also if you want to play Neogeo games then buy them digital from Nintendo xbox PlayStation stores or Steam on PC SNK just can’t seem to know how to make a better console Nintendo defeated SNK and Atari go play these games on the PS5 and xbox series X not old consoles that weren’t as great as the arcade
Not all NeoGeo games are available on newer platforms. No Breakers games on the Switch, I know right off-hand. No CD versions with their enhanced soundtracks, either.
@@TexasHollowEarth who cares about all the Neogeo games that you can just hack on your NES classic or PC what you don’t understand is the console wasn’t great the king of fighters games weren’t the same as the arcade version up to PS1 until finally PS2 was released that’s when the Neogeo games played perfect your looking at a console from the 90’s that failed
@@TexasHollowEarth so what if their not on the Switch go complain then to Nintendo who was always a failure bringing arcade hits to console but the graphics of this console Neogeo was really bad SNK never made a powerful console in 2000 like Microsoft Sony Nintendo did that’s their problem cause SNK didn’t have street fighter games going their console Namco no one was interested in buying this console you can’t just expect someone to buy a console that plays only SNK games you don’t see xbox making their consoles playing only Microsoft games and Sony making their consoles playing only PlayStation exclusive games and Nintendo only playing Nintendo games that’s why the Neogeo failed
I want to get a chance to relive the real time loading times on each game, *but you will not let me.* Infact, your lens is experiencing the same PS1 deterioration.
Have You Looked For Neogeo Cart To Cd Project?
I never was into NEOGEO cause i was never into Fighting games, the only Fighting games i would play today are Tekken and Mortal Kombat, aside these, i've played none
However i own a NEOGEO Arcade Stick Pro so i can emulate arcade games in it
The NEO-GEO CD would have been a great system had it not been for 2 flaws: it's very expensive & the games suffer from long loading times. 😕
Best way to play Neo Geo in 2022 is emulation. I have original hardware and still prefer emulation.
And why is that ?
That’s ridiculous. Emulation always has lag.
@@Pagaugezero not nowadays. The Switch is perfect.
very long loading times
this console is good but you always waiting for loading……loading……
CDZ was a biiiiiiiiiiit faster 😁
To speak the truth Playstation is best console ever exist even neg go cd can not compete with it🤔
God it looks crap on an LCD. Much better on the CRT.
Polymega
Neo Geo CD - Even Faster Loads
Nah only on dreamcast because overlooking is better
