Might get an incubator and some wood queen cages and queen cell cups so every spring you can save extra queen cells and put them into the incubator and use them in splits or in queenless hives after they emerge. Just a thought! Great Video ! A sharpened metal teaspoon might work better for cutting out queen cells.
Those are some good ideas. I'll look into making an incubator. Seems like I waste a lot of cells, and if I had virgin queens on the ready, I might be more successful.
Yeah one of rhe reasons I like wax foundation in the brood chamber.
Hey Nancy. I have some of both. I like the plastic because it's fast to assemble. The wax is better in the end though. Thaks for watching!
I'd recommend one of those kinves that has the replaceable razor blades (not a box cutter but an actual flip out knife). You'll get much closer and with a new blade can actually cut partially into the plastic without going all the way though. They are also MUCH thinner than a standard pocket knife blade.
Hey DialedN. It's funny you said that because I had one in my pocket and didn't think to use it. I break it out in the next video will post today. Thanks for the tip.
Good work. Quick question, why do you place these Queen cells in a frame without broods? Thank you.
Hi gueilin. I use a frame that has nice comb that is accessible. I've used brood frames as well if there's room. It really doesn't matter as long as there are enough bees in there to take care of it. Thanks for watching.
I always enjoy your videos, You always show the good and bad of the things you do. It's mostly just like I do. It's nice when a beekeeper shows how it really is. Keep the videos coming they're much appreciated.
Hey Baker Bees. Hopefully not too much bad, lol. I try to show it like it is. Follow up to this video will post Sunday Afternoon. Take care.
He did you see the northern light ?? And weather here has been up and down on a down right now
I missed the lights. I remember my wife mentioning it and I was down and out for the evening. lol
Hopefully at least one was successful. But wow, that was a lot of queen cells on one frame! They were SERIOUS about growing a new queen!
Hi HHH. Yeah, it was loaded up. Hope all's well with you at the HH homestead. TAke care.
Your video inspired me. I went through all the colonies today and fought off the pissy girls. Rain/sun/cloudy has really jacked them up. I did your thing of swapping the supers. Hope it works. Pulled a few queen cells and had one hatch in my hand! What a rush....but she flew off before I could get her in a colony. Good luck to her!
Hey Jon. Man, pissy is the word all right. I did some more work after this and they covered me up. lol The Guardian Bee suit did it's job and kept them out. I got one sting up on the shoulder though. Not sure how that happened. lol Yeah, it's cool to see those virgins hatch out like that. I try to get them on a frame and back in the hive asap because they are a little flighty and run like a track star. Good luck!
Nice work there. It isn't easy cutting cells unless you have some special blade. I've tried and had similar results - not always perfect. But with 4 cells they should make a nice new queen. Thanks for the video Darren.
Hey Russell. I got lots of queen cell cutting tips that I actually use on the next video. AND, you will like the results, kind of. Thanks for watching!
Hope they get hatched. I had one hatch but she never made it back from mating. Hope your flow is going well. So far so good here. Hope the rain continues. Take care.
Hey Gary, Flow seems to be on now, between rains. lol I have about 70% success I'd guess. Good luck!
I've heard you mention a problem with ants on more than one occasion. After I had a colony last year that was completely lost to ants, I learned a trick that so far for me has worked great. Just mix 3 parts 1:1 sugar syrup to one part borax. pour abour 1 oz of this into a pint sized mason jar with a small circle of No 8 harware cloth for the lid. place it on its side under the hive. Ants can get into it but the bees cannot. soon they take it to their nest and feed it to ther queen and brood. colony collapse. no more ants.
That’s a good tip. Thanks.
Thinner knife or just a si gle edge razor blade? I've had the bees repair damaged qc and she emerges ok. FWIW.
Hey Glenn. I took your advice - you will see in the next video. Thanks for the tip and have a nice weekend.
That little bit of opening on the back side of those cells I would think would be ok an you have them sealed off on the back side now . It is good to see the storms have not damaged anything around you with all the damage all around you. We had some storms last night but calling for stronger storms from 2-8 today and tonight . I think I have finally got all my colonies going now but one weak one that will not produce any thing this year . Bee safe with all your storms . Looking forward to seeing how those two splits turn out. Thanks
Hey Kathy. You will be happy to see the next video - it's rendering right now and should post this afternoon. Seems to be raining here every other day. lol We've had some really good forage days though. Thanks for watching!
ive not tried it but I heard Gus Mitchell say you can cut wax above the cell and fold it down over the damage.
Hey RTX. Yeah, that's a good tip. I did kind of do that on these, and where I pressed it in it helped seal them up too. You should check the next video posting today (Sunday) you will be surprised.
I left a colony alone with dry queen cups and didn't crush them and 2 weeks later queen cells all in them due to a heavy necter flow.
Hey Steele Wings. Yeah, if you leave them, you need to be ready to come back because they will fill them up. I like to note those strong ones with dry cups for planned splits in a couple weeks. Thanks for watching.
lady bug at remark cups are still dry on the front facing side on bottom of frames 14:11
Dry cups are good cups. lol Thanks for watching.
D, get you an exacto knife..I use them all the time on foundation.
That's a good tip - watch next video. LOL
👍👍👍
Thanks for watching Kajun, have a nice weekend.
Thankyou for the detailed video.
Thanks for watching Kennith.
Nice cells, 😁easy place to cut them out.👍
Hey DC. Yeah, they were pretty handy. I like them like that. Thanks for watching!
Them bees are saying what the heck, you brought a nice to a gun fight 😂
Hey Andrew. Yeah, after this video I worked on some other hives and these were pretty tame compared to later. They went berzerkers on me. lol Thanks for watching!

I worked my father in-law's bees this weekend and shot a video - they were insane hot. The Guardian bee suit earned it's keep for sure. lol
