    okay the "in HO scale it's the size of a football field" line blew my mind. Really puts it into perspective.

      Did the math, a football field endzone to endzone is 360ft, in HO size thats 24 miles, 15 1:1 (irl) feet is 1 HO scale mile, correct my math if its wrong but thats just 24 miles in a straight line and 45 square miles. Im not 100% sure on the square miles part but the 24 miles I am 100% on.

    • @WingsStrings
      @WingsStrings 2 місяці тому +2

      your math is off by a factor of four; 360 feet in HO scale is roughly six scale miles which is still an underestimate of the largest map in plan, but the football field analogy was the closest tangible space to compare it to that most folks would understand.

    The comment about rivers is interesting. Here in the UK the early railways often paralleled canals for the same reason. They'd already surveyed and found the flattest route between two places for the canal.

      Makes sense. A good spot is a good spot. Reminds me of a quote from the Destroyermen series which comes after the USS Walker gets swept to an alternate earth with the same geographic layout except this one was in the middle of an ice age so there is more land and evolution took a different direction, one of the characters (I believe it was Captain Matthew Reddy) makes the observation of one thing that has remained consistent are that many of the cities that he and his crew learn about in this new world are built in pretty much the exact same place as their counterparts in the real world and he pretty much says that a good location for building a city complete with an excellent natural harbor is still a good location no matter if it is a different world.

    • @jacoblyman9441
      @jacoblyman9441 2 місяці тому +5

      I noticed that on the west coast mainline in my own UK trip, we had canals alongside the track from London to Crewe most of the way.
      There were canals in the US, but lost business to the railroads quickly. A western narrow gauge example I know of that followed a canal was the Salt Lake & Eastern, which followed the canal that is now under McClelland St. in Salt Lake.

    • @dkbmaestrorules
      @dkbmaestrorules 2 місяці тому +3

      @@jacoblyman9441canals actually managed to survive quite well into the railway era in the UK - a lot of people think that the railways killed them, but they actually remained pretty competitive for non-perishable bulk cargo, to the point where the railway companies either bought them out or made agreements with them to neutralise them as competition. They did go into a long, slow decline, though many managed to survive into the post-WW2 world - by which time there was some interest in saving them.

    As someone who lives there, I would love to see a map based on michigan, we did have a decent number of ng roads and if it's the upper peninsula, there would be lumber and copper for the raw materials in need of transportation. I would love to see a map inspired by the terrain of northeast wisconsin, my "back yard" had very few narrow gauge railroads owing to the relatively flat terrain of most of the state, most lines eventually being converted to standard gauge except for the logging railroad and common carrier of thunder lake lumber company. Otherwise, the chicago and Tomah (later purchased by chicago & northwestern) had the one Fennimore to Woodman line remain narrow gauge, and it was later referred to as the "Dinky". Though that map would be more south west wisconsin in the Dells area.

      As much as I love the Thunder Lake narrow gauge and what little there was of Wisconsin three foot gauge, I see why they chose not to do Wisconsin and the wider Midwest. The team is only so large, and focusing on more narrow gauge dense areas is the smarter move for a team of there size. Wisconsin wasn’t dense in narrow gauge and they would be forced to pick between the north of the state or the southwest.

They aren’t a huge team, so focusing on narrow gauge where it was dense makes the most sense for them. We can’t really assume that they’ll continue development after the game’s completion until we get there.

    I’m more interested in the economy. A lot of talk has been had about RR Tycoon 3. Will that include its detailed economy sim? I understand if scope of CoS doesn’t extend up to owning factories, suppliers, and other companies. However, the beating heart of RRT3 was the movement of goods organically, along riverways and overland, creating differences in price at places of supply and demand. Other games in this genre have never gone as far in depth as RRT3, whether Railway Empire implementing only a barebones version of that system to Transport Fever abandoning any economic simulation entirely, making it just a number-go-up game. Railroader does a good job, but is also pretty surface level, with contracts demanding and supplying fixed levels tied to nothing especially, and of course not shipping anything by methods other than railroad. Having a nice loco sim is all right, but if there’s nothing to do then that’s that. How exactly is the economic simulation going to be implemented?

    • @WingsStrings

    I wonder if there is a 3ft gauge electric locomotive? I had a thought of laying down rail in a Eastern Washington map setting where there is interchange points with the Kettle Falls Branch which currently owned by BNSF, and connecting to Pend Orelle railroad, connecting Colville, Chewelah, Clayton, Deer Park, Riverside, Loon Lake, Elk, and Newport Washington State hence the railroad called Colville, Deer Park, & Newport Railroad the Snowbelt railroad. Some areas will be electrified because of tunnels and will use stone bridges instead of steel or wood.

    • @bluepoppy1026
      @bluepoppy1026 Місяць тому

      There were several narrow gauge line that had electric operations. The Pacific Coast Railway for example built two steeple cab electric locomotives themselves. As for in game we know we will have steam and diesel but I don't think electric is going to be an option as while it was out there on the narrow gauge it was pretty limited. As for maps there are no maps based in eastern Washington that the team have committed to on release.

    Another nerdy question: I get that this isn’t the era of complex signalling - But could a very simple (and automatic) token regime exist?
    If more than one train is in use, the “driver” gets a token (out of thin air, animated station master not important) for free track to the next available crossing point. Or, if another train is in that section, no token (watch out, driving on sight…)?
    Not to really emulate real world fully, but indeed helpful in either multiplayer of single?

    • @jacoblyman9441
      @jacoblyman9441 2 місяці тому +1

      I think a lot of the railroads in the US in the era operated on Timetable & Trainorder rules (that might be the model railroader name for it, but it encapsulates the operating style well). I know token exchanges were popular in UK systems, but I can't think of an American example off the top of my head. It probably happened somewhere, I just couldn't say.

      @@jacoblyman9441 Absolutely, I agree! My comment comes from the eh, “reality” of this simulation (which is _excitingly_ promising…!).
      As I see it, earlier multi-train & || multiplayer rail simulations (as played by Mark [Hyce]) create some additional logistics - also funny ones, indeed. If a time table was introduced, a can of logistics worms ensues I guess…?
      So, instead of shouting at your coplayers _“…are you still fouling the main south of the sawmill near [place]…?”,_ I simply imagine a symbol being visible - or not - as you approach and have set the last switch towards a mainline section.
      No funky automations, ATC-braking, signal posts or animated visuals, just a “clue” that something (train, lost car, whatever…) is in the section ahead. Not as a series of blocks, just towards the next possible branch off the main…

  • @rhyceg
    @rhyceg 2 місяці тому +2

    Couldn't you just simplify a Washout/Bridge Collapse mechanic where by the original "blueprint" is can be retained even though a disaster has occurred. Then you can just hit rebuild from blueprint. The point I guess is not that the washout cause frustration with having to deal with fiddly track laying and embankment reconstruction along the alignment, maybe some will want to rebuild from scratch using it as an opportunity to make amendments. But for most it is about generating tasks and like you say a story which makes the world feel more real and alive. Railroad games have a real issue with the world feeling empty and frankly lifeless. Requiring your railroad to re-prioritize is all part of running one after all, focusing on getting the line reopened moving workers, purchasing and sending new ballast, rails, sleepers to the worksite etc would be fun as long as these dramas are random and scarce. Else it would as you suggest, be a nightmare if every two days you had a washout.
