- This is an early Fleischer cartoon from 1930 starring Bimbo and featuring the character who would soon become Betty Boop.

Its weird that Betty started out life as a dog!.
Some of you say the animators were on drugs, others call this adult swim of '20's. But do you know that the censorship code wasn't written until 1934? That's why the early Betty Boops seem risque, even for the period.

And to think cartoons nowadays won't even show someone smoking a cigarette.
Man, I miss old cartoons.

I'll kiss your cheeks and black your eyes"
no Nancy Lee is a generic name for a sailors girlfriend or "the girl back home". some others are Sally Brown, Eliza Lee, Kitty/Katie O' Toole and more vulgar names like Sally Swallows, Rose/Rosie Bottoms or Mae Roxabedde (Rocks a bed). Thats also for if they dont' want to give their name out to the crew for fear of another sailor trying to steal her or the name of the girl they're going to find in port. some may just use to O.A.O. or the one and only.
No one knew how to end a cartoon like the Fleischers.
This is fun to watch back to back with Popeye's 'Beware of Barnacle Bill' cartoon. The Fleischer's were just amazing!

Not all animation is Disney pablum for kids,
And so what if it's weird?
Some of the best animation ever done ala the Fleischers, Tex Avery, etc
is not what you would call conventional.
Like most cartoon characters at that time, Betty was a work in progress. It took Grim Natwick to really get her to where she looked a year or so after this cartoon was made. I think that this was only the second cartoon that Betty appeared in.
These were early incarnations of the characters that would later become Betty Boop and Bimbo. Still very cool cartoon.
One creepy toon. Changes timbre and style every 30 seconds. Like a fever dream.
I love watching these early 30s Fleischer cartoons. I really love the bit where the lightning bolt punches Bimbo's Captain.
all cartoons from that era were a trip. they all had adult themes and shit. a lot of them had racial shit too
This cartoon predates Betty only slightly but everything that would become Betty was present in this character, including the same voice actress. The only real difference was she was drawn as a dog here. How can you look at the body, the way she's dressed, the hair, the big eyes, and then hear that distinctive voice and think it could be anyone other than Betty?

Of course, Fleischer used the song again in his 1935 Popeye opus, "Beware Of Barnacle Bill", with Bluto posing as "Bill".
This seems like something I'd find on Newgrounds, except without the memes.

I really don't think it's Mickey,
'Steamboat Willie' the first Mickey Mouse cartoon came out in 1928, It wouldn't suprise me however if the Fleischer Brothers and some other studios who used similar looking mice used Mickey as a source.
It was a common thing during the 20s and early 30s to have human like animals. Such characters still existed after that period but by the late 30s human characters were becoming common place in cartoons.
Angriest captain I've ever seen. His delirious fury at the end of the film totally makes it. Also, holy man-swallowing bedroom, Batman!

my grandfather used to sing this song to me when i was little--sort of a "call and response" deal.
I watch this it make me young again and smile from ear to ear such joy so innocent.

She still had dog ears at this point although they were shrinking.
The first Fleischer toon that had her as a 100% human was 'Mask-a-Raid' (1931)
her dog ears had become ear rings by this time.

@NymphadoraBeeWolf She started getting more human features in the Fleischer toon 'Mysterious Mose' (1930) And I think either 'Bimbo's Initiation' or 'Silly Scandals' whichever came out first) (1931) was the first BB toon with something close to the recognizable Betty Boop head with no trace of dog features although she still had massive dog ears.
I believe 'Bimbo's Express' (1930) was the first one with the 100% traditional Betty Boop head as we know it,

Thanks for this.......didn't know Betty Boop did this song before Popeye and Bluto.........great surreal stuff......the doors...sofa and Bimbo diving into it...the cat gossips.....and they were only playing draughts :) reminds me of Roger Rabbit with them playing pattercake pattercake...

This was a very interesting cartoon. Betty Boop looks retarded, but what the heck... it was worth watching! (the boat with legs cracked me up)

Well there are a few Barnacle Bill videos on UA-cam that use some of those "alternative" lyrics, I take alot of stuff from Wikipedia with a grain of salt, But I have heard that bit about how the Barnacle Bill The Sailor song was originally called
'Bollocky Bill The Sailor' which makes sense if those original lyrics listed on Wikipedia
are the real thing.
I don't like Bimbo here. I prefer him in Bimbo's Initiation or in Swing You Sinners. :(

If memory serves me right, Didn't they also also do a Barnacle Bill with Popeye and Pluto.

I can't figure out why Fleischer cartoon characters just muttered random bits of dialogue instead of speaking normally. And the villains always just said "RRrrrarrrgrr" no matter what they were doing at the time.

Great vid, but the words are certinly not the ones I learned back in the 60's (decidedly 'X' rated) to Barnacle Bill, soem of the wordd are the same.

Eso depende de las precepciones, Pues fuera de lo que paresca, era astuta y valiente, y eso era bastante para la epoca. Y a muchos les gusta por su estetica visual, por esa carita de bebé. Si bien, su contenido no era del mas apropiado, pues al fin y al cabo era entretenimiento, no crees???

Yeah, and it was more toned down, but I liked it a little more than this one.
Like most cartoon studios, they only listed a couple of the key animators, and they probably rotated the names as they were listed from one cartoon to the next. At least Max Fleischer gave credit to some of his artists. Walt Disney's name is the only one that appears in HIS cartoons...

Well, it wasn't a Disney cartoon and I'm not sure what people would have expected of Disney in 1930. Those early Mickey cartoons were pretty surreal. I'm sure to a lot of people cartoons all blurred into one crazy medium.
