To watch this great event for MIKE SMITH makes me Laugh and makes me Cry ... I was a DC5 Fan during the British Invasion, but a Huge MIKE fan. Luvved his lead vocals and that perpetual impish grin that never left his face. For Paul Shaffer to have done this is simply spectacular .... Thank you Paul, and above all RIP MIKE ! Miss You Buddy .....
Wow! I was there (clapping, guy with the shaved head after ‘Go To Pieces’), what a night! So glad I found your video document of this incredible tribute to the beloved Mike Smith! Thank you 🎼
Thank you Paul shaver for your inspiration of putting together these legends for Mike smith. I’ve always loved Paul’s infectious enthusiasm for music .
Just saw and listened. I put it into the way back machine and loved it. Sometimes it takes a Canadian to think and do the right thing. Thank you, Paul Schaffer
I used to work in a Bank in the City of London in the late 70's and early 80's and drink in The Plough on London Wall Highwalk, sadly the pub isn't there anymore. Mike was living in a flat in the Barbican while he was working at the embryonic Capital Radio and used our local during the evenings, he was a pretty good pool player too.. We all got to know him and he even held a poker school on a Thursday night in his flat. He was a lovely chap and I often think of him. I was so sad to see that he had died so tragically. Miss you matey.
This was an Awesome random find today...sad that it was years ago now, sadder That Mike Smith is passed. But, as a teen in the 80s, I wasnt doing Madonna, Michael Jackson, Smiths, Bowie, Furs, Etc....THIS was Me and I was PROUD OF IT. BEATLES, KINKS, DC5, ZOMBIES....BRIT INVASION. AN old Soul, me. So for me it's a double memory. I Knew then, this music was 20+ years old. Now, 2008 is 15 years ago. Such a Renaissance of Great music that brit invasion era and Mike Smith a HUGE Voice in it. R.I.P. behind that Vox Continental Mike
What a great show and tribute. Thanks for posting this, and of course special thanks to Paul Shaffer for pulling all the right strings to get it up and mounted. It's clear Paul *loves* this music. Fifty years ago, I played in a largely '60s cover band, and we were every bit as enthusiastic about all the little details that, for us, *made* these tunes as memorable as they were and are. You can see it in the way he conducts and what he emphasizes. And of course, the everpresent Vox Continental organ. IN 2018, I attended the NAMM trade show, and the Vox booth was giving away free harmonicas, that were labelled as "Continental" and provided with plastic cases in the exact same colors as the Continental organ. The last chapter of Mike Smith's life was indeed a sad one. I liked the DC5 a lot.
Thanks for posting. I was at this show and a DVD was supposed to be released. I got to meet so many of the performers. Thanks to Dave Letterman for getting the Zombies there when they had been stuck in Canada. It was a great late night indeed! RIP Mike and RIP Denny Laine.
When i woke up a week afther my cesarean 13 aug 1989. The only few words and tune what was in my mind , “ trains and boats and planes took you away” and nothing more!😢 i could never find the hole song and didn’t new who was the singer/ band until in 2012 a friend of me used shazan ….a few minutes later i heard the HOLE song and heard the name of Billy J Kramer! I also had a sort of video/ clip in mind but no one could explain what it ment. In 2013 i was called to help to participate in a study in the hospital in Groningen. Since 1989 I thought I had just had preeclampsia, but that turned out to be eclampsia (not pre-eclampsia) so I was just dead, but they were able to bring me back. but I still think it is very special that I was the only one who could sing this song after waking up even though I had never heard it before, but I still play it regularly and it makes me happy! Thanks for this life saving song Billy❣️
Wow! Fantastic program - how could I have missed it? Thank you for posting. Thank you Paul Shaffer for such a fabulous tribute to a great musician, and influence. Billy J Kramer doing, I'll Be Yours My Love - LOVED IT! Peter and Gordon coming out, and doing I Go To Pieces - I went to pieces. What a CLASSIC performance. Thank you Mike Smith.
Happy that this s popped up on my UA-cam feed. I was a little young for the early British invasion but later became a big DC5 fan. Aware of a lot of the story between Dave and his hired band mates. Sad about Mike but nice to see he wasn't forgotten.
thank you so much for posting this ! I caught the original airing on tv, but was never able to find it again till now...especially wanted to see Denny and the band performing "Anyway You Want It" again (Denny was ripping into it, and really seemed to be enjoying it ). Mike Smith was the real, main talent in the DC5. Bless Paul Shaffer for putting this tribute together, getting all the right people, and putting his whole heart into it !
I was there. Had to wait like 5 hours in line because the Zombies were stuck in travels. The show started very late. Interesting that there's no Zombies performance in this video.
The Dave Clark Five performed 18 times on the former hugely popular Ed Sullivan tv show that's more than any other rock band did on that show. And for awhile the Dave Clark Five were right up there with The Beatles. The DC5 were a big part of the mid 1960's rock acts British invasion to America.
if any group was destined to do the DC5's Because in tribute, it surely had to be the Zombies !! Did I blink and miss them or did they not manage to get there ? Don"t get me wrong, I love Peter & Gordon and the show was a triumph and congratulations to all concerned. I do hope Mike got to see it and realise how much people cared.
DC made a rule that any band member who composed a song, he Dave Clark would have his name on the composer rights. Nice guy, he really screwed Mike Smith. His personal tribute isn't wanted. A rogue.
Mike Smith is a great singer. He may also be the most underrated singer...maybe ever. And that is a SHAME. Also, if you Google Mike Smith his name will not come up. You have to Google Mike Smith of The Dave Clark Five. Another MISTAKE history has made.
I was in my prime through the British Invasion . Great time ,memories to never be experienced again . Every Friday SAT night was party time . Saw big names live and many sweet memories . You’d be surprised who came to our city in london ont Canada ,many big names at really great door prices . It’s really neat to remember who we saw .late 60s,70s,80s,90s. Fast cars ,great chicks , great parties ,great smoke ! Remember that had to be hidden ,now it’s wide open .
Mike Smith will forever be fantastic..

Peter and Gordon ---
Gordon Waller - 1945 - 2009 --- RIP ...
I saw them at a small club in Michigan when I was much younger and they were great. I hold a special place in my heart for that concert.
Great to see Denny Lane performing the smash hit "Go Now" before his untimely passing.
Great Music Great artists

So good of Paul to come up with this great event as a tribute to Mike Smith..Will always love DC5...!❤❤
Paul’s dream fulfilled w Denny Laine - what a moment! Such generosity on that stage amongst all those fine musicians. Really wish I had been there!
Early 60s to mid 70s greatest music ever written .. this music will stand the test of time and be played years from now.
Great. Billy J❤
this is soo cool Mike had the best rock voice ever and the late session drummer Bobby Graham did the drums for the records
I love it!! Thank´s Paul.

what a fantastic trumpet player !!!
Penny Lane was a superb rendition, they even added the extra trumpet part at the end…
Was able to see Mike Smith's Rock Engine in Illinois near the end of the tour. Mike was in fantastic shape and the entire concert was great.
I was at the show at BB King's in NYC. Wonderful night!
Brilliant 👏 ❤🎉

classic moody blues song.
Great video. Mike was the man!
I was there. Had to wait like 5 hours in line because the Zombies were stuck in travels. The show started very late. Interesting that there's no Zombies performance in this video.

Thank you Paul ,and crew for putting this together, you must of had a fun time doing it.
Art never knew he did not play piano on that song I always loved it and wondered what kind of piano they used
Superb
Peter and Gordon sounded so tight. Never would know that they hadn't been together for so long.

The sad thing a little before Mike Smith terrible accident his son had died.

Loved it!!! A true legend Mike. RIP. Though I just heard "Because" and I thought they butchered that one. Sorry.
He ain't standing there. Now he's dead. But he was great.
when was this recorded?
Do you have the full concert?
who is the drummer on this video
Lou soloff ?
How come none of the original DC5 members weren't asked?
Wrong Paul..they were from Tottenham
DC made a rule that any band member who composed a song, he Dave Clark would have his name on the composer rights. Nice guy, he really screwed Mike Smith. His personal tribute isn't wanted. A rogue.
Definitely not Dave Clark on the drums
Always turn Paul Schafer's mic off... can't carry a tune in a bag.
Mike Smith is a great singer. He may also be the most underrated singer...maybe ever. And that is a SHAME. Also, if you Google Mike Smith his name will not come up. You have to Google Mike Smith of The Dave Clark Five. Another MISTAKE history has made.
