- The design of the revamped Pragati Maidan, with more than 40,00,000 square feet of built-up area, features a convention centre, likely to be one of the largest in India, with a combined capacity of 13,500. The amphitheatre, all set to seat 3,000, is also touted to be one of the largest single-gathering space. The new space shall comprise a plenary hall and a multifunction hall, with capacities of 3,000 and 4,000 respectively. “This area shall have mechanised walls, which can be moved out to create space for 7,000 people. We have also included two auditoriums to fit in 900 and 600 guests. The state-of-the-art audio-visual and IT networks will ensure that proceedings in each of these spaces can be relayed in real time,” says Sanjay Singh, director, ARCOP. With more than 100,000 square metres of pure exhibition space, Pragati Maidan will also feature one of the highest exhibition halls in the country, with its height being close to 18.5 metres.
For those of us who have frequented Pragati Maidan during fairs and exhibitions, we have experienced the maddening traffic congestion around the area. To prevent these blockages, the new design makes provision for a basement, which will be connected to the Ring Road through a series of tunnels, thereby freeing traffic on Mathura Road. There will also be a bus station within the premises to hold 60 buses, and 1.6 million square feet of parking space. Of this, 60,000 square feet will be dedicated to air-conditioned check-in security plazas as well. For the benefit of consumers, there will be two food courts, besides small kiosks.
The new design for Pragati Maidan complex has been envisaged to create a link between the past and the future. The team, which was chosen from among 18 firms in an international design competition, has drawn on public memory and history of the space to create a dialogue around urbanscape. The idea was to explore a new typology in Indian architecture and create a vocabulary, which is in sync with the ground realities of the city today. The teams at both AEDAS and ARCOP were acutely aware of Pragati Maidan’s position, in context of Lutyen’s Delhi - even though it’s a part of this prestigious zone, it’s located right at the fringe, just touching the neighbourhood around the Supreme Court. “So, the convention centre is being used as a link between time periods. We have pushed the centre towards Lutyen’s Delhi and pulled the exhibition centre to the back,” explains Singh.
The concept has deep cultural roots as well, drawing on the melas of yesteryear, which were hosted outdoors. In a paradigm shift, the consortium has taken the exhibition spaces inside. However, the spirit of the outdoor has been kept alive through plazas, trellises and pergolas. There are shaded walkways that connect each building - some as wide as 12 metres. The amphitheatre is perfect for nukkad nataks, folk and cultural shows, while courtyards are a perfect showcase of vernacular architecture

Delhi already has Aero city & Largest International Aiport. A new expo cum Convention centre is being built in Dwarka under guidance of Modiji .
Develop the people and the city will be developed then. With visible poverty and an average capita income of $2000 per year, it can never be a truly developed city.
