Best practice is to start it with gasoline and switch over to propane. I have the same generator & this works every time.

This is the only thing that works for me. I had given up until I read this comment. I also put a better spark plug in it, but it wouldn't start. I am still glad I switched the plug out.

Having the same problem with mine when I first got it. Backfired several times on propane just as yours does. I warmed it up on gas and switched to propane and it ran good. I have added a natural gas regulator to mine which will run on both natural gas and propane, it starts and runs great now. You can share this video with Duromax and hope they can advise you as to what to do. Mine also had the same surge as yours and I reached down and held the choke open and the surge went away. Choke open is all the to the left. There are UA-cam videos out there the show you how to covert natural gas and what parts you’ll need. Mine runs great since I converted it. You will be able to use natural gas and propane through the same regulator.

I’ve been in touch with Duromax over a week ago and he has determined the spring on the choke was the problem. It’s still in warranty and they are sending me a replacement carburetor to install. Will update after replacement

That is exactly what mine is doing. This piece of crap let me down right in the aftermath of two ✌️ different hurricanes......

Check the rocker arm to valve clearance. It appears to be letting propane out of the cylinder before combustion.

Bought one like it so wnen I'm out of town my wife would be set with a generator, forget about it!!!! Hurricane came power out ⚡......brand new generator wouldn't start at all.....had to send it in for service....brand new......by the time the next hurricane was approaching in a few months it was still not ready.......they told me I could go pick it up unrepaired if I wanted 🤨.....I was not priority......

I am running the same unit on propane 100% of the time. In the video when we see you trying to cold start , I don't see you use the choke. I also have to use the choke . Mine will do exactly what yours if I do not choke first.

I put a NGK spark plug in it,and doing that appears to have solved all my issues. I can't explain it. It just did. been doing start up tests and no issues after the plug swap.

Totally agree!! You must use choke for starting

I have the same unit. Moved to Propane a couple months ago and it works great. 100lb tank. You may have some bad propane or a bad regulator. Try switching back to the little tank. Also, YOu need to switch the idle control back on when running on gasoline.

went down that road, turns out is was most likely a crappy chinese spark plug leaking arc or something. changed to a NGK and it is working. check out my later videos.

Glad the spark plug fixed it..Usually a backfire on propane will indicate a lean mixture..which will usually be not enough gas getting through a regulator or loose hose..I've also ran into propane gensets that wouldn't run but for about 20 seconds on the small LPG tanks..not enough vapor when almost full is the only theory that made any sense..

Check spark plug gap should be at 0.30” or 30 mils. Also reminded that I change the regulator to a adjustable regulator. Pressure should be between three and five psi.

It doesn't make sense but I am going to change out the spark plug and go by a spark tester inline. maybe it is a intermittant spark supply?

I have the exact same model xp13000hx and it's doing the same thing. I called Duromax and the 1st thing I was told was to replace the spark plug with a NGK plug and that I needed to use their hose and regulator. I had had the propane company run a line to generator without useing the Duromax line and they blamed it on that. Said there was to much pressure to the reg behind the controle pannel and had damaged the diaphram. They are sending out a new regulator.I think if that is the prolblem, the regulator was bad from the start. Propane co tied into my line going into the house with 1/2 to1lb pressure so the line pressure is not too much. It did the same thing as yours. I ran it for 2hrs and everything worked fine. Next day after setting all night. It would Backfire and not crank or backfire andcrank. Mine will run fine on gasoline. I have only 6hrs on it. (still in break-in) Did you get yours to run right?
